Hot Rod Comics

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 36-3window, Feb 4, 2007.

  1. i was bored today and dug around in some of my magazine collection. we have discused Drag Cartoons , Car'toons and Hot Rod Cartoons of the 60's and 70's on here...but how many of you were aware of this? Hot rod Comics-featuring Clint Curtis, published by Fawcett Publications in the early 50's . somewhat realistic with good stories. even some tech. obviously done by hot rodders--on the top chop they talk about leaning the windshield posts back

    cover of issue # 5 , october 1952

on this page they are building a `32 ford 5 window. lightened flywheel , milled heads on the flathead , boxing the frame , dropped axles and chopping the top is discussed in one page...if that could be done that fast

I used to love to read about Clint Curtis and his fellow Road Knights when I was a kid in upstate NY.These weren't especially easy comics to find on the news stands way back when.My original ones are long gone but I have managed to score a few over the years and am always looking for more.As previously stated, technically they were pretty accurate.

I bought them and read them in the early '50s, and thought they were very informative. I discarded them decades ago, and wish I hadn't.

Do you remember Car toons with Kr*** and Bernie?? they arent as far back as your comics but probably just as entertaining and collectable.

Here's the only one that I have. I picked it up in a local junk store years ago, I always watch for others when I'm out looking for stuff but never found anymore of them. Probably all over ebay but I have never thought to look.

    Vol. 2......#101....... April........1970.

  11. Those are definitely great! I don't remember seeing them on the newsstands when I was a kid,but then I was looking for Hot Rod and Rod and Custom.

Here's the last three I own.I had a large collection of them and gave them away to a,"friend" who promptly sold them for a lot of money.

Oh I almost forgot this one.

I've got the first seven issues, and I agree that they were more accurate than most comics. One of my favorite stories is in one from around '64-'65, when to prove a point, Clint builds a rail dragster completely from pieces in a junkyard and beats the hottest factory car in a 1/4 mile contest.

I've been trying to think of a way to blend two of my loves (comics and cars) into a NEW and INTERESTING idea. It's still eluding me, but these old pages help a lot. Thanks for sharing.
