I dont get why this is selling for so much? anyone know? It looks like gunk to me but maybe im missing something. 1) its a convertable 2) its a 2 door no matter how well preserved your car is it's still a 4 door. but who cares, i own a '55 chevy 4 door and can give two $hits about it when people cay, Cool Car, Too Bad its a 4 door!!! but, my dad bought it for me cause i love '55 chevys and thats all he could afford at the time when i was in high school. 2 doors were out of the question and still are even though i can afford one now on my own. 4 doors just don't bring the same money as a 2 door
thats crazy lol I love the 4 doors and I love how the back open suicide. its just crazy to me to see that car going for so much and still have six days left. dont alot of people just buy the four doors and seal the two back up? would you save alot of money that way?
1st off it's a 2 door convertible. Plus a Pace car? It will be interesting to see what it goes for in the end. My dad had an original '57 Turnpike Cruiser pace car convert when he married my mom in '61. He traded it for a used falcon and an old pulp wood truck in '62. LOL Wish I had it now...
same here dude.sure i wish my car was a 2 door. but i have tons of storys about all the fun $hit i've done with my 4 door. took it to gigs, back yard partys driven it all over socal. and never once was it a pain in the **** to flip my seat up so the people in the back could get out. they had their own stinking door to get out of!!! =) PLUS your car is cool cause as you said, it has FACTORY suicide rear doors. i'd definitly drive a 4 door merc. who cares!!! if it's what you like then who cares. only person you have to please is YOURSELF!!!
This might sound stupid to say but does it mean that much to have an original? does it really drop jaws when you tell people that? or do people really even care?

The key to your statement was that YOU like 4-doors. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather see a 4-door than a honda civic but the market just isn't there for many 4-doors, sorry.
o its ok I just didnt get why this one is going for so much when you can get clean 2 door that are already redone for around the same price on ebay
very true. the market for a 4 door is LOW. most hot rodder and builders buy 4 doors to REBUILD their 2 door. the money is honestly in 2 doors. but still, i'm suprised that no one has stepped up to buy your 4 door merc, it's actually quite nice and appears solid. you also have to remember right now is the time to sell as people are barely beggining to get back on their feet after Christmas, and are now getting their Tax Return $$$$

it's also got alot to do with the history of that merc convert. if it infact turns out to be an original pace car for the indy races, that will affect the outcome of the bidding. alot of collectors will buy it in a heartbeat
The sad truth is that 4 doors make good parts cars ... and were considered a old man's car for years. Lots of folks here got a 4 door hand me down car as their first car. Even with 32 Fords ( of which I am a little more familar with ) ... the 4 doors have been used up for parts cars. FOMOCO made a lot of 1932 Fordors ... but you rarely seen one ... now. Which is a shame ... I think they are pretty cool ... 4 door Mercurys too ...
Convertible. Four doors have a poor reputation in custom circles, no matter how hard fans of them try to change the perception. But more importantly, it has history (can't fake that):
Just because someone scribbled "Pace Car" on the side doesn't mean it has history. The one in the auction looks like it was painted on by a blind monkey with a barbecue brush.
Hmmm, you might be on to something. The "M" in Mercury is not the same letterform. The "500 Mile..." looks to be the same, but I don't know if it's a copy or not. I doubt the quality on the original (if it's not the same car) is any better. At least it's not a four door, though!
Think they made several "pace cars" and didn't have vinyl stickers in 1950. May been painted by differnt guys?.......OLDBEET
Ok not to knock more doors so don't get shook. The Key words here are convert, highly optioned, and Pace car. Collectors don't want a clone they want the real deal and a rare real deal is worth more than a run of the mill everyday car. I personally couldn't give too hoots in hell, I'm a rodder not in it for fame and fortune I do it because I like to. But there are folks out there that are more interested in being famouse and horn tooting. So to them owning the right stuff is all its about. You know the whole, " You walked into the party like you were walkin' off from a yacht..." The whole 2 door 4 door thing is something that I can't or won't explain to you, you either get it or you don't.
Even clones are getting big bucks at the B-J. Someone will pay $50k for this, spend $20-30k on a resto and auction it for half a mil.
A lot of people do, and a lot of people end up with cars that look like **** because of it. A real two door Merc has longer front doors and a different roofline. That's not to say that it isn't possible, but there's a right way and a wrong way to convert one of these cars into a two door. The best way involves using donor doors and a roof. And as for cars converted into convertibles, it all depends. If a nice solid sedan/hardtop body is cut apart and all the proper parts from a rusted out convertible are installed in the car so it works as factory, then that car will be worth good money when done. BobK's car is a good example of this, I did the same with an O/T GTO using a Buick Skylark roof (all interchangeable GM A-body stuff) But the cars that are made into "convertibles" by sawing the roof off and capping the tops of the doors won't bring a fraction of that money since they don't have a funtional top or side windows, making them super impractical. I cringe whenever I see a car with the roof cut off in that manner. Carson tops are a popular fix to the no-top situation, but they still aren't as functional and practical as a real folding top, therefore they don't bring the money.
Let me add to this that a carson topped convertable is normally worth way more than a converted sedan or coupe. Aside from the fact that they are not nearly as prone to fold in the middle.
