Hey y'all I am really thinking about running the original 4 banger in my model A for a while. Any places or anyone have some banger parts laying around? Are there some good places with aftermarket stuff, carbs, heads, turbos etc? Thanks in advance. Will
Yes, a lot of good parts are available - repop Riley overhead conversions, Miller Hi-Speed heads, etc.. What are you looking for?
There are a few great places. I'm as well leaving the 4 banger, and putting some speed equipment on it. Old 4 bangers are the root of Traditional Hot Rods, and early Dry Lakes and Bonneville Racing so it's cool to keep them alive. Here are a couple of great sites. http://reds-headers.com/html/model_a-b.html http://www.secretsofspeed.com/index.htm Enjoy, -Tyler
OOH OOOH I'm gettin a woody just thinking about the overhead conversions, probably a bit pricey though. I will have a budget, but if its gonna get super high dollar, I'll wait and find a flatty V8. I've been tossing the idea of makin it a banger, seems noone here has one, and I like being the odd ball. I guess i'd like to start witha new head, some internal work, ignition and fuel supply. Any fuel injected stuff out? Something vintage? Id like to keep it a 40's to 50's style banger. Thanks
I just mailed off an aluminum intake for a model a ford that I would of gave ya for $50. Sorry. I can turn ya on to a wico mag 1509 for 100 bucks and a stock good dizzy. Join fast and secrets of speed society, do a banger search here. That'll last ya yearning for knowledge for months.
WOW the prices for this stuff is way more reasonable than I thought. This cold be a hell of a lot of fun. Anyone have pics of of their bangers and soem specs? Are these things road reliable? Like 300+ mile trips?
The Lion cast iron head is a good buy, and probably a better choice than an aluminum head. The quality is excellent and the price is reasonable. Get one of those, a 2x2 intake with a couple of Strombergs, a decent exhaust and a Mallory distributor and you'll have a strong-running and reliable motor. Lots of options available for the internals too, including counterweighted cranks, forged rods, full pressure oil system, etc. Kinda depends on how far you want to go with it.
That woudl have been a hell of a deal to me. I'll get wit you on the mag and dizzy. I need to pull mine out and get numbers etc off it, to see exactly what I have. Thanks for the help guys.
Down here in NZ I have a fairly stock A motor with a Winfield head, twin 97's, Mallory electronic distributor, and a T5 gearbox, it runs real well. For kiwi made parts visit www.macsspeed.com
300+ mile trips? well then you better leave now HAHA... seriously, lots of oldtimers have done cross country runs in stock model a's but dont expect to keep pace with modern traffic. 45 mph is a good pace to avoid engine longevity issues. constant high speed use will require considerable mods to make it last.
http://www.dan4banger.com/ Dan Price has been making Banger parts for 30+ years, good guy with some great products.
Well hosuton is about 250 miles from me, and austin is about that as well. Now if my wife will take thsi damn job in San Antonio I will be an hour or so from austin. I really would like to beable to cruse about 60mph. 45 is way too damn slow. If I wanted to go that slow I'd restore it hahahaha uhhm but thats not gonna happen. Seriously though, If i ran maybe a 5 speed behind it, changed rear end gears etc. Would this help witht he speed/ longevity issues any? I hae a couple of lines on flatty V8's, but started seeing all these bangers runnin around here on the H.A.M.B. and other sites I started thinking damnthis would be kick ***.
Convert the oiling system to full pressure, and it'll last. I can go 70-75mph for hours on the highway without any worries at all. Be shure to start out with a B block, the crank and rod journals are larger, and if you get a 33 or newer, it has counterweighted crank too. Some oldtimers claim that the babbit bearings will hold up fine, but I have no experience with that at all. My engine is a german built B, and they came with inserted bearings. I'd built myself a 4 Banger if I was you, they are lots of fun. Kedde.
The currently made equipment comes from a large variety of small shops...best places to view a lot of things in one catalog are in catalogs from Sacramento Vintage, H&H in California, and Dan Price site.
Do a search through the archives for our monthly Banger Meet, you'll find loads of info and tips there. Don't forget you can also fit 3.54 or 3.27 ratios into an A rear axle if you're concerned about revs on long journeys (or a quick-change!). As for heads, I personally don't think you can beat a Winfield.
You were joking, right???? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=160003&highlight=banger http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=159297&highlight=banger http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=143214&highlight=banger http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=146030&highlight=banger http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=155954&highlight=banger
There is nothing cheap about building a well thought out combo imho. I don't think a b block is a must either. Plan on killing $5000 on a reliable pressurized insert engine. I am sure guys here have alot more that that in their engine. I have bought two b motors, both turned out to be cracked, 6 out of 10 probably are in the thinner deck surface. Not all b cranks are counterweighted, even if they are some still **** for reasons I am too lazy to type . Call h and h antique engine rebuilding and get a free education, ask for Max. A nice guy.
Hey Saw thanks for the advice, I am trying to finsih a couple of jobs up this week so I can pull he Engine out this weekend, and look it over really well. I finally got almost all my **** here at my house cleared out(i still don't have **** for room though) Hopefully this weekend I can bring over the 5 window sat afternoon or sunday. I will keep you guys up to date, and I should have my puter back from my buddy setting it up to support some Streaming cams I hope to have goin off and on when I work on it.
Vintage injection might be rather tough. Not any out there that I know of. I make this one. Not vintage at all.
