How about '57 pontiac (Dana) with 5:56 gears! It was set up this way in the late 60's to run the 1/8th. I'm sorry to say I don't have any time slips.

Engine is a 327 +.060" =337. Isky cam mechanical Hilborn fuel injection, unprimed. Run only one day in the last 30 years. I hope to get the driveshaft back from the chrome platers this week. Looking forward to driving it for the first time in a long time this spring.

    482-inch 409 Chevy.
Slick-shift Hemi 4spd "crash box" built by Liberty gear
    Vertical Gate inline shifter
    Mopar 8 3/4 rear
"Leaf Link" rear suspension: Floater axle perches, upper bar links like a 4-link, front half of the leaf springs clamped to make them solid (like the bottom bars on a 4-link), no clamps on the back half of the springs so they still move.
All positions are in 1-inch increments: Housing perch on leaf spring mounts: 3 positions; front leaf spring eye to ch***is: 2 positions; front of upper link where it connects to ch***is: 3 positions; upper link on housing: 2 positions. For a total of 36 different positions to triangulate the rear suspension to tune hook and instant center when it launches.

I chose the 8 3/4 rear because they're damn near bullet proof, very affordable, are all 30-splines, and are stronger than a similarly priced/equiped 9-inch. The 9-inch, with a lot of aftermarket parts and price, can be built stonger than a stock 8 3/4, but by that time, it's cheaper to go with a Dana 60.

If you go with the Pontiac rearend, just follow it forward through the driveshaft, pontiac ujoints are heavier also. That's a good thing. However, when you get to the transmission you may run into problems. If you go with the late 60's fine splined talishaft (Muncie) you shouldn't have a problem finding them. I am going with the early 60's 16 splined Borg Warner style, that yoke is hard to find. I'm looking for one right now. anybody have one?

The last time I ran it, in the 80's, 336 cu. in. Chevy, M-20 4 speed, and 5.38 Pontiac rearend. It ran 7.50's in the 1/8th (L.A. Dragway) and 11.40's in the 1/4 (Green Valley).
If it ever runs again (don't laugh Chuck), it'll have a 355 Chevy, old Nash 5 speed and I'm really leaning toward a 12 bolt Chevy rearend.
The reasons I'm thinking about the 12 bolt are that it's lighter, takes less hp to turn, easy to get parts for. If you want to run an early Pont/Olds hard, you might think about replacing the side carrier caps with Mark Williams parts.

I have a freind up here who has run as quick as 8 flat 1/4 with the Pon. rear the only mod made was a backbrace with a bolt going through from the outside to the left rear cap to preload it and solved the breaking cap problem

I'm getting ready to start on my second 62 ChevyII axle car, g***er, and i have a 57 olds/pont rear for it. I brought a 68 Camaro drag car just for the rearend, and sold the rest. The rear has 5:13's, spool, and Summers Brothers axles in it. I'm going to go with 4:56's and a posi for the street.
Oh and i'm running a do up 350 right now but i have a 70 454 to put into it when i get the time.

  16. when I ran a g***er, I used a Dana 60, spooled with 5.88 gears, hemi 4 speed with straight cut gears and a very high winding 350 sbc. Side stepped the clutch at 5 grand, hung on, and shifted at about 8 grand.

My '57 Chevy 150 has a built 327 (dual quads, hot cam, solid lifters, roller rockers, high compression aluminum heads, long tube headers), Muncie 4 speed and a Ford 9" rear axle with 4.11 gears mounted on parallel leafs with beefy, fixed traction bars. Below is a link to a picture of my heap on Don's Hot Rod Page.

It's not totally traditional, but if you're thinking of running a 12-bolt, think about a Ford 8.8. They're MUCH cheaper to build than a 12-bolt, and common as dirt (under everything from Mustangs to Lincolns to Explorers to trucks to Crown Vics). Take one apart, and it looks like the Ford engineers reverse-engineered a 12-bolt; same size bearings, gears are the same...one has two more ring gear bolts than the other, but they're slightly smaller diameter, I forget which is which. The Mustang guys have been running them in very, very fast and powerful cars for a long time. They have the advantages you listed too--lighter, less parasitic HP loss.
Plus, you can frequently find them with disc brakes.

I run a 350 and a TH/350 to a Mopar 8 3/4" rear. Not too exotic, but I race the car...and sooner or later I'll blow it up. I can get back in the game pretty cheap.

My car has a 289 with a Ford 8" rear.

I've already got a shortened 9" on the shelf waiting the day when I tear the car back down and really soup it up.

Future plans are for a hot SBF. Possibly a stroker. A toploader 4 speed and a 9" rear.

My '55 Chevy project has a 301 running a T-10. Olds rear with 5.13 gears. I've taken it apart to build a new front frame stub for it, so it's not in running condition at the moment.

I wouldn't be so sure about that 8.75, on the moparts board lots of guys breaking them. I guess a mark williams billet cap and a back brace help but they are still breaking them. Just a heads up.

My henry J has a 68 chevelle large journal 327 bored .020 over crossram with 390 holleys. Turbo 400. Lincoln versallies(spelling?) 9in in the rear. It's a disk brake rear and it's already narrow stock. Has a built 3rd member with 31 spline moser axels, It's all new and I think it should work well, however I've heard stories of the em. brake locking up on them.

I just run a boring old 355cu SBC w/hydrolic flat tappet,10psi boost ,dana 60 with 4.11s and a glide w/brake (after 4 wide ratio muncies) its good for mid tens. The same combo went 9.40s in my 76 chevette, that was a fun ride:D
