World of Wheels -Chicago "Disaster !!"

  1. I gotta say.I did the ISCA show series for years first showin' my ride then as a judge,Now I admit we do things different on the west coast but I've never been involved in a show where the owners stayed with the car, maybe during opening be there cleaning or to dust off the car ( most shows have some body at the door 1 hour early so you do this before the crowd arrives).....it's about the car and the work put into it and maybe the display, not the owner like some body said save that for the cruise nite.bottom line its a biz and people Paid to see the cars

My Best indoor car show experience was the Nats in Tulsa about 5-6 years ago. I Had the Wife and 3 year old daughter with me who is now 8 years old. I was doing my best to get a look under the frame of a 30 A Sedan and how he did his steering. Guy was on the other side (in between his and the car on the other isle where they both had chairs and cooler set up) of the car in a lawn chair. He gets up and I figured it was to try to get me to move along. Instead, he asked if I wanted a closer look. I said Yes, of course. So he first bends down and asks my daughter if she would like to "Drive" his car. She hopped right up in and made vroom noises while turning the steering wheel. the whole time, the guy gets his build boook, shows me pictures, has me sit in it, tell me tips of his mistakes. We took pictures of Allana behing the wheel. It also helped to inspire the wife not to nag at hoe much I mess with my truck.

It made a big impact on me and I try to return the favor when I get a chance to Joe Q Public.

You could smell he had been drinking, but he deffinitly was NOT drunk. Helluva Cool guy!

On the flip side, my wife didnt ant to see people at all, and I can see why they would do such rules. Either way, Im not a big Car Show person, and none of my junk has been in one.

  3. And show 'em.

Like I said earlier I'll probably never ever show at a big show hell I don't even bother to make it to most cruises, but I have a real aversion to someone makeing thier living off me and then telling me how to act.

"Did owners back in the 50's and 60's hang out around their cars at the indoor shows?"

We certainly did. Back then indoor auditorium shows were rare and expensive. The promoters called the shots, and they were making money off our hard work. Even though people voted, the trophies went to whoever could kick back some cash. That's when local car clubs would pool together and have a show outdoors in a highschool football parking lot. Venders that wanted in on it payed their own way. Old Joe would sell soda pop from his delivery truck, Jack would sell cans of oil and flat repair kits from the seat of his gas station tow truck, and so on. The rodders would all kick in for a bunch of trophies, several small, and one large. The small would be awarded for things like best hubcaps, best gearshift knob, etc. The big one would go to the best all around build. Votes were put up on a wall for everyone to see, so there was no cheating. Law enforcement would come around to keep an eye on things. They got a chance to step out from behind the badges and we got to know each other as a person. We always sat or stood around our builds so that we could shake hands and talk to folks and explain how we did things. There was never any beer then. It just wasn't done. Coke in small bottles was the thing then. Food? You bet. There was always someone there frying up burgers or dogs. It's a shame that's all gone now.

  7. Ok Im not defending the promoters.However.ya gotta know what it cost for them to put on a first rate event (ISCA style) this is an event put on for profit.thats no secret, and thats why all the clebs and big name displays, plus dont forget the cost of travel money, prizes and insurance for you and you guys in the building......the risk is all on the promoter.what we get out of it is the looks from our friends and neighbors and maybe a few new converts to our way of thinking.Nobody loses on this and it shows we really care about our rides......think about the idiots asking stupid questions,or the guy with the to tall ego talking down to onlookers....that sets back any good done with us by the car.again thats what cruise nite is about.indoor shows are all about the cars...but thats my thought on it

IMHO, and that's all it is, exhibiting at these shows make no sense at all unless you're trying to sell something.

Wrong. Most of the people on here congregate with others of the same interest. There's also a spirit of competition, friendly or otherwise, that drives builders to perfect their skills. It's got so little to do with the trophy itself. Why are there auto races? Same same. It's bitter cold out right now. The autorama here has always been more like "cruisin on foot" with a shit load of cars, some kool, some unbelievable, and some just plain junk. Just like the local hang outs and cruise nights. It's a show. A place to enjoy your cars with your peers and get ideas and inspiration. Last year our gracious host refered to indoor shows as a "Vanity Tool" and for some it's probably exactly that. Not the majority in my opinion.

I made my living building show cars for 25yrs. Not the kind we love so much, more like the kind we may never achieve on our own. Pebble Beach, Meadowbrook, etc, now that can be more of a vanity tool than any hot rod show I've ever attended. Yet at the same time there's more history and engineering marvels than one could imagine. My best advice is to have fun, have an open mind, have some sense of decorum, and save me a beer. I'll be there.

who the hell is gonna watch over the cars from idiots that want to lean over to touch something cause most of the cars in this type of show have some serious cashola tied up in their rides.

If you want to hang by your car and drink beer It is allowed at Billetproof, Primer Nationals, and Viva las Vegas (The big three Trad specific happpenings). There are also other popular CA venues like Father's Day show and swap at LA Fairplex, Hotrod Reunion and March Meet at Famoso drag strip...etc....

Clearly Austin's weatherman never has to utter the word's "Wind Chill"

It's going to be in the teens this weekend in Indy, I think I have the girlfriend convinced that WOWindy will a be nice warm place to go for a walk.
