I gotta question, I have seen a bunch of guys here with multiple cool cars in OK (drivable) shape. And then you see some guys with only one car but it is pretty much done (or as close to it as old cars go). Which is better? To have a few of your favorite cars and slowly chiping away at them never really finishing... but still having them in your garage, or to have one and chip away at a much faster rate? Hyfire
i say one car at a time, but when it's done, if you have the extra cash buy another project and keep the completed one....at least 'till the new one is road ready. i sold my '52 plymouth 2 months ago, my t isnt on the road yet, and it kills me everyday not to have an old car to drive. i see that plymouth almost everyday, sitting in the same spot i parked it when i sold it....
At least one on the road (who cares the condition as long as you enjoy it), and one in the garage to work on.
Jus like CRACK.....I'd like lots more ,rather than some better stuff.... I am trimmed down to a lean 10 cars now.
I have a '57 g***er I'm working on, a '54 Buick that needs a trans or open driveshaft conversion (which will grow into building a cool 322, which I have most of the parts for), a '56 Chevy that is a solid body but otherwise basket case...but I got my job and met my wife because of it so I can't get rid of it, and a '62 Suburban as a daily driver. In my next life, I'm going to do two things differently: Be raised by wolves, and have only one project car at a time. Unless you're dripping with time and money, you never get any of them where you really want them. And if you have ANY other activities/hobbies/family life, you're even farther away. Brad
sometimes is more about building tha car...or just having one in tha build stage that keeps ya goin..don't get me wrong driving is what I look foward to but there is something about being able to go work on 1 or 2 or 3.... I think the more tha merrier. just my thoughts
At least the second one you can STILL do in THIS life...and I've never seen anyone raised by wolves that could build cars, let alone figure out how to drive them...!!! I have five rods/kustoms...three are done and drivable, have been for several years...one is nearing the drivable stage, hopefully this summer, then I'll start on the next one which has already been sandblasted/stripped to bare metal and put in primer... R-
I have one good running, good driving car that is licensed and one car that is real close to licensing but they both still need paint and interior work. And I have a couple of other cars that I haven't started on yet;I just like too many different kinds of cars, I may never get one completely finished but I wouldn't have it any other way.
I say multiple cars - because I like to use different ones at different times. Family time, spring, summer, fall = '64 Catalina convertible Family time, winter and when picking up stuff = '64 Catalina Wagon Cruisin, runs, racing, man time = '55 chevy (this is the one still in progress) (family probably wont like this one) There was a slammed dually here too, but that went to fund the more appropriate cars
I say go for quality in quan***y if you can. I have a bad habit of 'capturing' future projects, so I'm just settling for quan***y for now.
I've got A.D.D. when it comes to hot rods. I just can't stay focused enough to only have one. I've got 7 now and every time i go to drive one its like a new car to me. Nope none of them are really finished but if I had that money in the bank I might spend it on something stupid like plasma TV's or golf clubs!!
I'd rather have a bunch of ok cars. I like having options, and plus when I get tired of one, I can move on to another one.
Since I've only been able to attain the final phase of a "finished" car a couple of times, I tend to gravitate more towards quan***y. I like working on them, I like the way they feel, drive, look and even smell. The wagon I just got from Big Dad here is going to be my work car. Nothing like a big block wagon to **** the gas down, but I like it and don't care how much it costs in fuel. I'll repair a couple spots on it and respray it and then drive it into the ground all while laughing at how much I'm enjoying it. Same with the Ranchero and the 55 Ford. Old cars are like potato chips, life is too short to have just one. Nik
I used to be quanity....I jus like old stuff and good deals were just too good to p*** up...then I went into the military and I had to change my views a tad to meet the weight cap on moves....now I'm one quality...I'm getting one done them starting another, I still have 4 cars...that said I used to have a whole lot more than that...now I have the one quality sled with me and the others are sitting in a workshop 2K miles away, once the driver is actually done I'll ship the next project out and chisle away at it till its done...the 4 cars/trucks I have are all on my "dream sheet" therefore I'm not looking for the dream car, rather the dream parts to put on the dream cars/trucks...one thing at a time, slow and steady...keep em long enough and they'll be an investment.
To me cars are like women...it's all about quality! George Carlin said he never slept with a 10 but one night he slept with five 2's so it's should count as a 10. Maybe in George's book...but not mine Bill
Well, Last summer I had two that were driveable, licensed, and insured. The 68 plymouth and the 54 chevy truck. As fall set in I decided that I needed to finish one so I set out to get the 54 into shop truck shape. One color half ***ed paint job done by me that I could use as my parts getter. Well I found a man that was retired and his profession was bodywork. He had just finished up a gorgeous 62 impala for a guy and was going to do a little body work on my 54 for me. In the time between doing mine and the impala he drove to Kentucky from Missouri to look at a 46 ford sedan. It was junk but I just happened to have a 46 ford that I got from a fellow HAMBer. Long story short I traded that ford for a beautiful paint job on the truck. It'll be way nicer than I wanted but I'm gong to finish it before doing the 68 plymouth. I did however come into possesion of a 61 chevy truck in the meantime traded for a few extra parts I had laying around.................
Quality is a good thing. But if the car is too nice you may not want to use it as it was intended. I know guys that have one premo first quality car but won't let it out of the garage if there is even a 1 percent chance for rain. In Florida those cars sit alot. As a car addict there are too many different ones that I like, so I'm stuck with quan***y. I have as many moods as days of the week and I like to have a ride for whatever my mood. I always have a ride for when an event comes up. Dependability is what I worry about first and I don't want to worry if the weather is going to be good or bad to take my ride out. Also I like to work on my cars, and I have too many ideas to put all into one car, so I like having projects. Gives a person more reasons to get up every morning.
Quality. I've tried quan***y - but I was never happy with all of them. I like to put all my eggs in one basket.
I'll go for quan***y,too many cool cars out there and not enuf time.I always try and keep one of them ready to cruise,I might even get the front seats recovered in the caddy's this year
I counted 23, but 24 if you include the one that I paid for but still have to drive to Minnesota to pick up (the guy said I could leave it there until spring). In all fairness, 6 of the 24 are parts cars. Quality over quan***y for me would be narrowing it down to 10, and I'm not even sure I could do that.
