Looks like my lil boys DIRTY DIAPER!! hahah Just kidding I dig the color, but Can understand the problems you have had. Painting anything other than solid colors is new for me,and I am sure I'd F*** it up. Good luck with it.
Most "gold" and /or "bronze" or "copper" coloured paints I have ever seen are very "low hiding" paint colours. They are also semi-transparent to let light shine thru the paint and make the metallic particles sparkle. I always found that it worked a lot better coverage wise to lay on a couple of coats of "high hiding" white before I shot any colour, to get a uniform underbase first.
Hey, Just a couple of dumb questions........... Was this product a factory package, or mixed just prior to purchase? It kinda looks like they added to much flattener (ground silica)- kinda hard to tell from three thousand miles away. Was the temp. of the vehicle held at 75? before, during and after it was shot? Not much will kill the shine outa a freshly shot job than cold air. Yeah, New York cold! Swankey Devils C.C.
Man that sucks. I was going to use that exact color to do the rims and scallops on my car (someday) I've heard it is PPG Omni with a flattening agent added. Alot of people liked the solid colors but there was a guy who did his car in the gunmetal silve rthat wasn't to happy with it. Hope you get it fixed to you liking. Todd
My place was at 75 degrees from the day before, I planned on painting so I kept her warm all night...still 75 in there.... It was factory packed, but I have never had to shake a gallon of paint so long before either, bottom was like mud....... Im alright with the texture, it dried nice and smooth, just not the lack of color or coverage.
Like i said it looks like a tri coat , I think the store sold you mid coat , the metalic would have been in first coat , that's why it seemed so transparent , you said there was no flake or metalic
I shot mine with flatz metalic and did not use the reducer only the hardener. It shot out a lot nicer for me without the reducer.
I shot mine w/ their "silver sled metallic" - Took 2 gallons (no reducer) to cover over black primer. Wasn't much flake in mine either, then after it was dry, the stuff felt like sandpaper. (Color was accurate, though) I ended up burying the whole thing in flattened PPG 3000 after all that. I'm happy w/ it now, though. FWIW- I'd hit it w/ another gal- shit's not that expensive- GOOD LUCK
I covered mine with their flattened clear. On the interior I cleared it and it did look like the color chip. i have less than a gallon of green on my entire car and it covered good. I bought a quart of silver sled on the roof and still have a little left. I sprayed mine over ultimate filler primer.
It should look "better" in natural light, flourescent lights will magnify any see-through areas. I have used PPG Omni in the past, which I am told is what Hot Rod Flatz is, and yes it is a low hiding paint, costs half the price, but you will need twice as much.
I heard it was a ppg/omni product also, that's why I figured I would try it....after looking at it today, I think I may wet sand it and lay a few more coats on...can't hurt I guess. I pushed it outside far enough to get a good look at the quarter panel, and it does have a cool "sheen" to it......Im hoping another few coats will make it pop.
The Product Development/ General Manager is an aquaintance of mine. PM me if you want his contact info... He is a real standup guy and should be happy to help you out.
Thanks, I may take you up on that, Ill give it another few coats and see what the outcome is...and go from there.
I used the Flatz maroon for some scallops, and it looks a lot like your gold. But your gold and their sample don't even come close. There was a VERY thick layer of stuff at the bottom of the quart I bought. I used a stick to stir it with, I don't think a shaker would've ever mixed it.
If their maroon looks alot like their metallic gold, somehting's not right w/ these guys. Haha. I've never bought any "off the shelf" paint that has been factory mixed. Aside from primers and clears and the like. Most of the stuff I buy I usually have mixed just about the day before I spray it to try an avoid crap on the bottom. No shaker, I always use a stick so I can watch myself mix it.
Well after another day, I have decided not to reshoot the car with the rest of the flatz paint. The color is so far off it looks more yellow mustard than gold.... Off to see my paint guy and come up with a base/clear I like.....
I used the sea foam green. the outside looks nothing like the paint chip they show on their site. But the interior panelas that I painted and cleared look pretty close to it. I do not have any pics of the inside yet.
I used the Carnival Red (pics in my signature the color flips due to the cameras and lighting used) and my buddy shot while I did all the prep work including the mixing of the ratios to paint it. It was his third car and my first ever doing anything of the type. I am happy with the outcome because I needed a cheapo paint job that would not fade and could keep out the water. Everyone that has seen my car in person remarks about the color and how great it is. I did mine last summer using their highest temp reducer, we shot it at about 98 degrees in a shop with no ac. The only thing that sucked about my paint was that we had to go over it once more due to some areas that we hit a bit too much and caused it to look like a patch job. Sorry to see and hear that your paint came out less than expected.
Hot Rod Flatz is just OMNI paint, a friend ordered some, and it just had a giant Hot Rod Flatz Sticker over the Omni Label.
no, in painting and printing you want a reflective base, so the color "pops". black base and it muddies (absorbs) the color, white base and it is much nicer. In fact, we use a 50% silver white to back up colors to give them a rich yet opaque color. much like a light grey primer. two worlds, similar color theory
hey bro wish i had time to talk paint with you when i was there in my opinion H of K peral base coats and custom mixed RM base coats with alot of peral have the best look. ppg lays down to shinny at times for me if i were you i would go with H of K gold mine peral ,wet sand what you got and go with it . ya it was pretty kool goin by yer place when i was there wish i had my car so i could have drive in the snow!any ways call me lets talk paint
Hot Rod Flatz is Flattened Omni..Some guys like omni, most likely the reason being that its cheap..I think it's crap but I've seen some decent results..Temp. has alot to do with how the end result of stomped paint looks..The slower the dry time the shinier the end result ..you can flatten any single stage not just omni ..You can also run with basecoat and use hardener in it for durability..Omni at a 4 to 1 ratio should take little or no reducer as its already thin enough as it is....theres tons of reasons why things don't work out right with paint and most of the time unfortunately its user error...
