I picked up a half a dozen blowers, clean, but still cores, I quess, diesel units, are they worth keepin around or off to ebay. I have no idea's. I checked into new seals , berings, end plates, are they worth doing that to or are they too big for street fun?
You can get $100 or so a pop on ebay for them, i should know the last one i bid on went for that much, If you keep them you can send them to any of the blower companys they pay top dollar for cores.
Talk to a place like Catco, they probably can tell you how much it would cost to rebuild one. Most major blower cores are basically the same, if you've got an intake and some accessories, you're in business. 8-71's are not as common as 4's or 6's. I'd hang on to 'em unless you really have a ton. As far as "too big for street fun," a blower only puts out as much boost as you make it.
We had a few 8v71's laying around so I decided to use one on my lincoln engine. Should be fun and the price was right! I attaced a pic, its just sitting on the motor, I still have to figure out the manifold.
I think alot of guys dont like the "V" blowers because the way the bolts are angled. The ones that arent V blowers have a flat flange and are easier to get manifolds for...I guess im crazy/cheap enough to make my own manifold so it doesnt matter to me.
they're kind of a pain to work on-and they were primarily low r.p.m. units, so zipping them to gas engine speeds can get hairy. Parts can be had, but by the time you've built one to take the abuse, you typically have enough in them to have bought a "regular"8-71.
If they are the genuine blowers off a diesel, not a blower company casing, they would be 8V71. I don't believe GM made an inline 8 cylinder. The V indicated the arrangement of the cylinders. If you look at the above picture, you will see the ribs being arranged in groups of two. The inline blowers had the ribs more evenly spaced. I do stand to be corrected, though!
I bought a front and rear cover, blower drive and bearings for around $350.00 . Its all interchangeable for most blowers from what I understand? Im not going to be overdriving it much if at all so it should be fine?
