I have a 40 buick with a 248ci eight. It is froze up from sitting for the past 44 years. I wanted to know if it could be replaced with the larger 320ci engine? I'm not sure how much longer the 320 is or if it would slip right in
The bigger motors are longer, but if you want i in there, ... all it takes is more time, money and work. Some one will have a much better answer soon, but I know there are length issues with radiators, etc.
The later 263 would be a bolt-in. Do a search here for Straight 8 threads- theres been some really good ones in the past. ~Scotch~
wrong, Buick's first muscle cars were the century's small car big motor. in the 40's the Roadmaster had a 7 inch longer wheel base from the firewall forward that made the 320 look smaller. they will fit in the shorter super and even in the speacial
this sometimes is cornfusing, 36 to 40 Buicks, Specials, n Supers, had the small 8, Century's, and Roadmaster's , had the big 8,s. The Century's used the smaller Special body but they had longer frames. front fenders were moved forward about 4 inches, hoods and sidepanels were longer. You can hardly tell unless you put them side by side. Roadmaster was exactly what its name implied, it was big all over. The Centuries were one of the first muscle cars, thats what thier name implied , and with the small body big engine, were also fast. They along with some Packards and Cadillac,s were good ol' machines to pull thier hotrods up to the dry lakes, and if you wanted to test the top end speed of your rod you just unhitch it on a side road. and shud be able pull that Century around 100mph.Later when the Century was reintreduced [54] they kinda mixed em up but the Roady,s, and Centurys usually shared the big engine.
Ohh and yes i know of a few guys that put the big engine in specials,n supers. some just cut the firewall and stuffed em in ol school, or shoehorned em somehow. But you can do a few things to a 248 or better yet a 263. A chevy clutch, milled head, bigger valves, little port work, open up the manifold for a bigger carb, small cam, headers and they will do as good or better than the big 8. even 4 speeds will adapt, go open drive shaft. check out Jyrki,s buick site. http://gamma.nic.fi/~marlin/Rmaster.htm
http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/engine_ident_52.html If you check here they say that the difference is only 3". If you want any parts. I just subed my 47 and have a running motor and ****** Sean
