I'm looking for a new daily for my wife, and I think I've narrowed it down to a Tahoe or Expedition. I want something with enough power to pull our camper and room to pack with camping gear. I don't want payments, so I'm looking at paying cash for something a few years old with higher miles. When we're looking at 100k miles and up, what will I get the most life out of? I see a ton of Expeditions on the road here, but that is most likely the trend rather than reliability. Any opinions on Durangos? If I would have asked this question before buying her Cadillac Catera I wouldn't be replacing hard to get to sensors bi-monthly. Thanks for any help. Please close this thread if needed, or I will after a few replies.
I prefer the Tahoe, more room, easier to work on when needed and parts are plentiful, besides, I'm a chevy guy anyways
Any reply you get here is likely influenced by personal bias. Check out Consumer Reports Used Car Guide. They rate reliability and comment on comfort, gas mileage and all that regular people car stuff. Understand they worship at the Altar of Toyota, and can't understand why anyone would want a "truck-like" vehicle.
I've got 2 tahoe's in my driveway. Pulling a loaded car trailer I got over 1000 km's on a tank. Head gaskets are the big problem on these vehicles, but they aren't that hard to replace. Buddy of mine had a 2003 Ford truck and had nothing but problems with the engine.
I've got friends with both, I don't see a real big difference overall. See who will give you the better deal.
Finally something I can weigh in on... We bought my wife a used 04 Yukon (Tahoe) and it was nothing but a giant hornets nest. Headgaskets like mentined above but also another problem with the newer Tahoe's and Silverado's (99-06) is the EBCM goes bad and the Anti lock brake pump won't shut off, even when the car is shut off. $800 just in parts for that bad boy and it had to be replaced in both my 03 2500 HD and the wifes Yukon. Thankfully mine was covered under warrenty and I found a place on line that will repair the wifes for $150. Or you can just pull the brake fuse and not have anti-lock brakes... that fix is free. Most that stuff your able to fix yourself so its not huge but it just made me crazy to work on a car that I was still making payments on. But I know plenty of friends that have Tahoe's and Burbs with well over 100k on them and their still going strong. You can search on www.fullsizechevy.com they have lots of info on stuff like this. I can't speak about the Fords at all. I work with a guy that has a Durango and he's not in love with it... they pull a camper and he said its sketchy at times with the shorter wheelbase.
