I made a 20 mile trip that way a few years ago. No problems with the car as a result.

Never experianced it but was told it could warp valves once you turn it off, particularly if its cold weather.

  5. If it's cold... stuff some rags up in the manifolds when you get there...

yeah, don't let it **** cold air back up the manifolds that can spell disaster for your valves

No sweat for 3 mi. but if your luck is anything like mine, you'll see more cops in that 3 mi. drive than in the last 30,000 mi. you've driven. :D

Done that a few times, with headers and manifolds.

All seemed to work ok, I dont think it would get cold enough in So Cal to cause any issues.

A friend of mine's Mustang caught on fire doing it. Burned to the ground before he could do anything. Total loss. I wouldn't risk it personally.

    Huh?

dang, someone better tell all those race car drivers with no exhaust systems....

me thinks there was an underlying issue there, I've spend alot of time running headers and cast iron manafolds (with pipe extensions to avoid the valve thing) and havent burned down my cars yet...granted my electrical system (prior to replacing it) caught on fire on a regular basis

Instead of just giving you the thumbs up and a stupid grin I'll tell you why you can do it.

If you are using the stock CAST IRON manifolds you will be fine. Cast iron takes a LONG time to heat up and an even longer time to cool off. Which means that your valves won't get cold fast enough to ruin them.

Its not a good idea with headers unless they are far enough away from the valves.......which is why cut outs are usually under the car and away from the heads.

A word of advice, Roll any and all windows down and enjoy the noise brother, I built a 55 chevy and drove it about 12 miles to the muff shop with morning commuter traffic. I never had so much fun driving the car. No problems, you won't hurt it.

I have no doubt that fenderwell headers and extended manifolds are fine. Running open headers underneath a car with carpet is another story.

The underlying issue was a simple backfire. Car hadn't been tuned yet so it was set rich to be on the "safe side." That didn't work out as planned.

  17. make sure there's no wires to burn. i made some dumps for my cars, just got the flanges to sandwich the headpipe from the junkyard and made the pipe drop down and then a 90.

I'm still not seeing your point. Every problem in life has an underlying issue. It's like saying, "He wouldn't have died from a stab wound if he could hold his damn blood in." Well yeah, I guess that's an underlying issue.

My point is, why even risk it? In the end, it's not my car, but like I said I've seen a car with open headers burn to the ground because it created a fire underneath. Throw the dice, or call AAA or a buddy with a trailer. Not a tough decision in my book.

your buddies car was 1 in who knows how many....whens the last time anyone (with the exception of you) hearing that they burned their car to the ground because it didnt have the complete exhaust system in it? I never have, my pop never has (and he's spent more time than me with no exhaust systems) trust me, if it didnt catch on fire with me or my pop, I'm not thinkin its a big issue...seems to me that your friend had some clearance issues or tolerances that were too tight....which most likley he would have had the same problem exhaust system or no exhaust system...heat just dont stay in the pipes as you may know, it radiates, which in turn it left too close to anything will torcheth your sled, underlying issues: inproper heat sheilding, inproper clearances, inproper install, AND lack of a fire extinguisher = operator error.

You're right. Go for it dude! I forgot about the SOUND!

Meanwhile, I also forgot about the time that my collector bolts on one header rattled themselves loose in my '69 Camaro. Got my car impounded for being an "unsafe vehicle" only a couple of blocks away from home.

But hey, you have your experiences, so those cancel out mine, right?

Look, I'm not saying the OP's car will catch fire. I'm not even saying it will probably catch fire or that there's even a 2% chance that it will. I'm saying it could potentially catch fire. That would be enough for me to say "screw it" and tow it to the exhaust shop.

And that was EXACTLY the question,,,,,,,,, "Its a 64 Galaxie with a 289, i started it up and it was loud as ****, i dont care about the noise, but can it damage anything ?",,,,,,,,, CAN IT? Yes. WILL IT? Probably not. Would I do it? Yea, when I was 16 to about 30, yea, I would never have thought twice. Now that I'm almost 40, I wouldn't, but that's me.

Drove around for a time with a '77 monte carlo that nearly the entire exhaust fell off -just headers into a 3 foot pipe. Loved the sound and prefered to keep it that way, but had to watch for cops and take the foot of the accellerator or I would have got pulled over for sure.

its not like he is taking a half hour drive in his car, he is going 3 miles, thats not even enough time for the engine to warm up. i'd just check to make shure anything flamable is away from manifolds. if your that worried about it go to the junkyard and get some pipe off another car to get the exhaust to exit under the car.

I watched an engine run manifolds only at night, it was quite a flame show.

Just make sure the open exhaust doesn't blow on fuel lines or wiring.
I've done it many times...never got busted [yet].

Hell yes! The bigger the valves the more impressive the drive will be haha.
I drove a few to my local shop. Last one was my 49 Ford with the V8 flatty. Small valves and open headers it sounded like a bi-plane coming in.
