has anyone here built a keg tank before. im going to try and do my first one in a week or so. what are your experiences??

  2. Haven't built the tank fittings (fill cap, vent, outlet) yet, but I've got it mounted in the bed in a cradle I built. I don't forsee any real problems, whether it's aluminum or stainless plan on TIG welding it so you can better control the warpage.

I'll post another once it's done maybe a couple weeks. Good luck on yours.

    thanks man.
i was going to make one out of a full keg, like yours, then take steel straps and strap it to the front of the trunk. there is no room for the factory gas tank, seeing how im going to lower it quite a bit.

  4. Sheez, I still got a ton of pressure in mine. Along w/ about 36 oz. of God knows how old beer in it. I thought, " Shoot, can't be nuthin' more than a little pressure". I poked the ball in w/ a fairly good sized stick... PPhhheeww... That **** came out like afterbuner fast, all over my hand/ wrist/ shirt. And let me tell you.. that is a stink you CANNOT just wash off. Man, I couldn't get close to anybody for about 2 days. Even my dog was like, " Damn, you stink like hell". It was bad. Since then, it's taken a back burner on the project. I want to know how to get it depressurized & emptied out, then I'll get to the good stuff on it. Hope to see how you come along w/ it, nickles. Good thread, man.

  5. I'm afraid if I drill it, the whole stink will abound even worse. Wouldn't be able to stop it then.

I just put a big towel over the top and pushed the ball down with a screw driver........ But it did stink up the driveway for a few weeks.

Here's the redneck special that was in my '61 GMC 4WD when I pulled it out of the field it was sitting in for the last ten years. The guy just TIG welded brackets and fittings right to it :)

  9. I have an old tapered keg I bought to use as a fuel tank, but am having second thoughts. How appropriate are they for a traditional-style build? Any old photos out there, or are they T-bucket and or Rat Rod stuff?

hmm..im learning how to tig right now. and i have alot of friends that do kegers. so i think ill take what i learn and then just trial and eror.

  14. I was gonna say the same thing. '60s era rods will like 'em. I don't know that they were used much prior to that. Not to say that someone didn't use one just not in vogue.

I think keg tanks are more appropriate for VW Dune Buggys than hot rods...but that's just my opinion. Go ahead & put one on - I can always use a chuckle at a run! ;) ;)

didnt have a tap. .45 just dented it. .357 went thru but lost alot o beer. what was the question?

  21. The one I have is a Miller Lite & it reads 16.6 gallons. Not sure what vintage it comes from. I would guess, late 80's, or so. I really had intended on using it in my off road rig, the FSJ G'neer. Only 'cause the original tank was full of trash & took up too much space for the true duals. I'll prolly fab a good sized tank for the '39, so i can hopefully fill up less, ha.

Rick's Hot Rod's used to sell a stainless weld-in filler neck, but I can't find it on the website anymore. I'm doing the same w/ my '48, so this is helpful to me as well. Maybe just a 2" coupling, and a square head plug like Truant's running would be the trick.

    Very unusual.
Typical 1/2-barrel kegs are 15.5 gallons - as you may be able to figure out, a barrel is typically 31 gallons - a pony keg, 7-3/4 gallons.

Miller uses the 31 gallon barrel system (nearly all commercially sold beer in the US is on this system), so I can't imagine why they'd have a 16.6 gallon keg...you sure those "6"s aren't mangled "5"s

    LOL....I agree.

  26. To get the pressure out , lay it on it's side. The tube goes to the bottom of the keg. Very T-Bucket. I do like the pain of empting one if it's cold.:D

Once your vision clears up from draining one of those kegs read it!Every one I've seen has "Property of Coors Brewery not for sale" or whatever your favorite brand is and I have seen A stock car racer get arrested for possesion of one as a gas tank.It seems these and 5 gallon military gas/water "jerry"cans were the favorites of stock car boys before the days of fuel cells

Beer kegs were the fuel tanks of choice in N.E.Dirt Modifieds before fuel cells were mandated.
Properly welded and mounted they were about as safe as you could get for the era in which they were used.
