I think you can waltz into your local Auto Zone and get a Mr. Gasket shifter and kit to do just that.

I've used one of those Mr. Gasket dealios and it works O.K.

I swapped out to a Hurst kit and it worked a hell of a lot better though. ;)

Look for a Hurst INDY shifter and kit. Those rule.

Its as easy as can be to do the swap. The kit will have instructions, but really its very simple.

If you want to go with Hurst Indy, I have one that I am not going to use. Swapped out the 3 speed trans in my truck for S-10 Five speed. Shifter is new, with instructions, $40 bucks plus shipping. Let me know. This kit will fit 55 -62 Chevy transmissions. I believe both car and truck, not sure about car application since I have the truck trans too. Let me know. Dennis

Yeh, I just tried to match up a Mr Gasket universal shifter to my 3 speed , it aint workin, the kits sold in the stores will work on the GM 3 speeds but not the early fords, due to the fact that the ratchet top cover is on the side of the tranny on the GM's and on the fords it is on the top, I am learnin, any other thoughts?

  10. If the trans is a top cover, it is the HD 3-speed. Most of them had top shifters anyway, but some did have column shifters. I have only seen the column shifters in other body styles with the HD 3-speed...the few light trucks I've seen with the HD 3-speed have all had the top-mounted shifter tower....maybe there were some columns. Or, you may have had parts swapped. I am understanding you correctly- the trans has a top cover, NOT a side cover??

You may not have much luck finding anything...but for what it's worth, here's this:

The Hurst Indy Qualifier (501 0018) says it's for '55-up Ford trucks, std. & HD, among many other makes. It's universal, so no tellin' what fab work is needed. The boot & plate are optional. (114 7336) The description says absolutely nothing about top vs. side. And, the directions aren't in the online PDF files.

Might be worth a call to Mr. Gasket, who owned Hurst until recently; or B&M, who bought Hurst.

Thanks for the input, yeah it's a top cover, the indy from hurst wont work, but I will give the other mentioned hurst a try, I do have a 4 speed from a 48 panel, but I was hoping that would be a last resort. The tranny that is in my truck now has T-8 on the top cover, I thought this was the stock unit, but I reall y don't know for sure. Thanks guys.

    hmm..

The indy kit that I got worked fine with my tranny. I too have a FORD 3 speed toploader tranny. Its got the cover on top and no place to bolt a shifter on the tailhousing.

The indy kit that I got had several different levers and stuff to choose from. Some was for Chevy, some was for Ford.

    Mine worked just fine.

    Are there different kits?

If so, look for a universal kit.

Well I wish I could see how you did it, I have the Mr Gasket Daytona, which essentially is the same unit, and I am dummystumped, Where did you bolt the unit and did you have to modify the stock levers that come down off the top cover , thanks

    Here's a pic.

Now this is NOT the tranny I'm talking about, but what you are looking at IS similar to the tranny in my car.

This is a tranny that I was thinking about using. I scabbed together a couple kits and bolted the Mr. Gaket/generic shifter to it.

The only modification I did was to bend that top strap a little and intead of bolting it (which I could have done) I welded it to the other strap.

  16. Tingler & Gavs,

If his trans is the '55 era HD 3-speed, the T-87, the shifter levers actually come out the top cover (for the column shifter), or the cover itself has the shifter tower for the floor shifter. It looks like your unit ( :D) is the '63 & later Ford T&C, what Hurst designates as a 333 style.

The T-87 isn't even categorized by Hurst as a style, so far as I can tell. It would be pretty difficult to mount a shifter on it. I suspect that the Hurst Indy Qualifier listing is not correct so far as it being able to work on the HD unit (they probably mistook the MD or OD units as being "HD"), but to say for sure, it would take a call to Hurst.

It would be possible to switch to a different transmission, like the LD/MD/OD transmissions, but he would need to swap bellhousings as well. In that event it might be more practical to switch to a T-5.

As I mentioned earlier, the very few F-100s I've seen with the HD 3-speed have all been floor shifted; the column shifter setup was normally on parcel deliveries & the like. The HD 3-speed isn't actually even listed in brochures as an option for the F-100, but they were available.

Thanks Tingler for the pic, I appreciate it , but homespun is correct , the levers do come off the side , I could probably take the levers off the tranny and modify them , but I think a t-5 may be the next idea.
