I started using Shell Rotella T a while back in a few of my engines because of the lack of zinc issue. It seems to me that an engine that puffs a little oil now and then just plain smells bad. Oil smoke has always been an old familiar smell to me that was non offensive. This stuff stinks! Is it just me, or have any of you all noticed it too? ...And don't tell me you've never had an oil burner either. -Mike

  2. It does. I run it in my Cummins and when I change oil, it takes a couple o'days to burn off the filter spillage. I drive with my head out in the breeze til it clears up.

It's not you---I worked at a shop ,and the owner swore by Rottela---and yes, that shit stinks bad---after a while, my hands smelled like it. It took almost a year to get rid of the smell!

I run hot rod diesel pickup trucks. There is a reason all of the diesel guys call it "rosmella".

The reason it stinks is because it's a Group III Hydrocracked Petroleum Basestock...basically it's in the middle of being synthetic and conventional. If it smells like sulpher, then it's a bad batch, call Shell and they'll replace it.

I run Shell Rotella T 15w-40 in my hopped up Cummins Turbo Diesel Dodge pickups and I only smell the funk during oil changes. I'm pretty anal about cleaning up any spillage with solvents so the underside of the truck looks spotless.

I ran the stuff in a 350 that I had for about 3 years. Never noticed any odd smells. I did, however manage to still wipe out 3 camshafts, despite using Rotella for its zinc-whatever-phosphate. I figured that a lot of the lifter bores were bad, and I did go through the whole engine each time, replacing bearings, checking journals for scoring, and had the engine hot-tanked and cleaned, etc. The cam that came with the engine was fine, and had served for 60,000 miles of the engine's life. I would have put it back, had I not mixed the lifters up. But yeah, I never smelled any thing from the oil.
