I got a customers 63 impala in the shop replacing the thrid member that he trashed. The car came in on a trailer so it wasn't drivable when it got here. After replacing the thrid member I test drove the car and the ****** is staying in first gear. The customer is saying that it worked fine before the thrid member broke of course so I don't know why it would stop shifting just sitting in the shop.I checked the vacuum at the modulator valve and it had plenty so I replaced it .Still no shift. The ****** is a turbo350. I hate automatics ,I just don't know much about them.Any suggestions???
This is a list of possibilities from a MOTOR trans. manual. -detent cable binding -govenor valve may be sticking -driven gear in gov. valve loose, worn damaged. -control valve(valve body) govenor feed channels blocked or gaskets leaking. 1-2 shift valves stuck -check case for blocked gov. feed or scored gov. bore which would allow cross pres. leak -check case porosity -intermediate clutch or seals damaged -intermediate roller clutch damage Did you try to drive the car in manual 1 and try to upshift to second that way. Manual 1 and 2 use different internal components for operation. Also, are you sure it's stuck in 1 and not 2? Just a thought here, did the driveshaft free-spin when the rear blew? Maybe the flyweights on the govenor valve flew open and got stuck there? Any way you look at the problem, unless you inadvertly damaged the kick-down cable (detent cable) when you did the rear,(let trans hang?) the problem wasn't your fault. Sounds like the plastic gear on the governor is stripped. It could Also be like Mike said , the weights stuck. The govenor is under the little round domed shaped cover near the tailshaft housing on the side of the Trans.
Did you try on the lift or driving to manualy shify it ? Also from the shock of third member threw the drive shaft could broke the govenor gear or it could be just worn. It usally wears in the middle of the gear, also when you have the govenor in you hand with gear facing up it has two ears that flap, hold one against the shaft and open and close the other to see if the valve in the center moves up and down. If not spay it while moving it the same way with gum cutter(2+2) and that will unstick the valve, hope that helps Dave.
