followup to fitting all my tyres on the rims, I now have the problem of trying to seat{pump up and seat the tyre bead} of tyres that are way skinnier than the rims......there on and Im not running tubes which would have made it easy, I tryed the ratchet strap around the tyre and did manage to pop one ok, but the others are proving to be difficult...any other tips?....Im REAL tempted to do the old butane fill and light it, trick........

Butane? Use ether. Works good but stand back...tire can jump ten feet in the air depending on how much ether you use...I've seen that happen....but it works

Yep, a little starting fluid squirt in it (and I do mean a little) then throw a match,,,,,foooooooop. Neat trick, but you lose eyebrows time to time.

  4. Maybe jump on one of the lowrider forums and ask how they put skinny whites on 13" daytons??

bolt it back down to the trailer you used to seat the tires, spend about 10 seconds spraying the inside of the tire with ether,I usually use a a stick with a lit end to light it.If that doesn't work you can try putting a ratchet strap around the tire to help it fatten out. Also take the valve stem out when you're inflating, it gets more airflow that way.

  6. Jesus Bert, it sounds like you are auditioning for the Darwin Awards. Please take video.

  7. That's how I do it.

If you aren't in a big hurry get a tube and inflate the tire off the rim. Put plenty air in the tube as to spread the beads.Let stand for a day or so and then remove the tube and the beads should stay spread.

  10. BEFORE risking life and eybrows...find a tire shop with a "Cheatah" or "cheater" tank. Its basically a propane-size air tank with a special nozzle and valve to blast air into the tire around the beed.
Also, this may sound stupid, but...
1)make sure the valve stem core is removed when trying to blast it on a tire machine
    2) make sure if the "air tube" under the tire on the machine is U shaped that the valve is positioned so that air is entering the tire 360 deg. around the tire.
3)make sure the tire is warm/soft. let it sit in the sun for a while, its amazing how much more a warm sidewall moves.
I worked in a tire store at the hight of the "pokin" 13 & 15" craze in the 90's so I've tried everything. Except explosives, chicken I guess. But I still have all my orriginal eybrow hair:p

I knew someone would mention video....haha, ether? aint got none.... might try Paint thinners......:) it wont burn the paint, will it? It will just flash quickly, yes? anyway, its night time now and I will have a go in the morning, the ratchet strap did squash it some, but not enough, and I will remove the valve too, thanks for the tips all....I will have a sniff at some lowrider forums too .....cheers, Bert

I alway use the starting fluid trick be sure to take out the valve stem and mount it to the car or a tire changer so you dont have worry about it coming at you in midair

if you remove the valve core, you'll have to use something other than your regular inflater, use a blow gun that fits over the valve stem. the inflater won't work without the valve core pushing against it.;)

  14. The valve core does have to be out when using the starter fluid trick though. Don't ask me how I know.

No ether? Get the wifes Final Net hair spray. Burns a little slower than either and not quite (by very little) as violent. Plus the added benefit of stickness to keep partial beads going towards full seating and not dropping back down. And it will make your shop smell like the strip club women was in there.

Also works well for potato gun fuel. So I've heard. ;)

Using a tire that is "way" skinnier than the rim (your words) can be dangerous (more so than usual) as they tend to want to un-bead when you hit a good pothole or bump. It also has the problem of getting the thing on there in the first place.

the tyres were wrapped in plastic and squeezed which makes it worse...but they are 5.60-15 on a 6 inch rim for the front and L78-15 on a 7 inch for the rear......

  21. You use ether, about 2 seconds or less spray. or start out with a short squirt to get a gauge on how much to use. Then light it with a can of carb cleaner with the little straw on it, the ether it too explosive to hold a lighter in front of to shoot the flame, of course you could if that's all you had.

Leave the valve stem/core in, it won't blow it.

    Works every time.

Trick I saw but never used - a small bicycle innertube put on the rim and inflated - between the tire and the bead filling the gap left over - basicly slows the air escape so that the tire can be filled and get the bead on the rim to start sealing, then the innertube is pulled off. Kind of hard to explain - let me know if it doesn't make sense...

I have the cheater tank on my tire machine but i also have sleeves that work like what Bwiencek said about bicycle tube. they are flat metal rings with a rubbery-foamy insert you put on top of tire that makes a complete seal with rim and automatically push off when tire pops on rim.
Three sleeves came with my machine but I made a fourth one for the john deere by taking a old tank that had a larger diameter than my rim cutting out about a 5" sleeve and hot glued foam from a furniture store inside to make the seal part. Steve

  24. I've had it blow a fresh valve stem off of the rim when I left the core in.

I hate to tell you but that is going to look like crap. The 5.60 will not just look right on a 6" rim. Tire will bulge out too much. 5.60 tire looks best on a 4-4.50 rim. I have seen them on a 5" rim but even that was pushing the look. 6" is a no no.

If you are stuck on the skinny tire have the rim cut down and rewelded or go with a larger tire.

Please please reconsider or else you will be sorry because it will look weird and not right. .

Not as much fun as making explosions, but it does work and you get to keep your eyebrows:

Cut blocks of wood to insert and spread the tire. Let it sit a day or two and when you take them out, the beads will more likely stay spread apart long enough to mount as usual.

I don't see why it would look bad, sounds fine.

Oh, and one trick I use is to bounce the tire up and down on the ground while inflating. Works most of the time.
