??? _ How Can You I.D. a Chevy Motor - ???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ponchobilly, Feb 13, 2007.

  1. I have a Chevy motor.
I need to find out what year it is.
Where can I find a code? ...then...
    How do I decipher it?

    All help would be appreciated.
Even wise-*** remarks would be tolerated.

    I know it's a: 350TPI

    Thanx, Bil

It would be easier to just find the numbers stamped on the block, at the front, in front of the p*** side head. Should be two sequences.

Also it might be helpful to find all the numbers cast into the block at the back, on top of the bellhousing area, should be a long one (all numbers, this is the block casting number) and a shorter one (letter and some numbers, this is the date code).

we can help you figure it out faster than you can figure it out reading web pages....probably....so post all 4 number sequences I mentioned, and we'll see what happens.

yup, some of the later blocks ( and this one most likley is late...350 tpi..) have the size in liters cast on the back behind the drivers side head, along with the casting #...ie: 5.0, 5.7 etc...

First I usually just do a search (google, etc.) with any numbers I can find. Almost always takes you to a page listing block, engine, or head numbers unless you have the number wrong or a real oddball. If that doesn't work bring it here.

***uming it's the factory TPI for an F-Body, you can narrow it down some.

In '89 the cold start injector was eliminated (look at the end of the fuel rail, if it has a tube and curling back arounfd to anther injector going into the runner)...but still had a MAF sensor (big sensor on fron of the TB (Camaro) or down the intake duct about a foot (Firebird).

In '90-92, there will be no MAF sensor, just a MAP sensor, probaly mounted on the Plenum.

Look at the heads casting, if they end in 083..they're the 350 heads, 081, the 305 heads.

I have a casting book...so if you get me the numbers on the back of the block, behind the drivers sdie head, I can tell you exactly what it is. The number will be 6-8 digits, all numbers no letters.

  11. Thanks for the replies, guys!

Markings at the back of the block @ 11 o'clock:
    GM5.7LG ...and...
    C237 or 0237

Markings at the back of the block @ 01 o'clock:
    14093638

Front tab on block- by p***enger side head/ water pump:
    V0403SNR ...and smaller...
2HN235508 (the last number in this sequnce is blurred. Looks like an 8 most times).

If I find out first, I will post my findings here.
    I appreciate the help.

  12. This told me the block is a 350 from years 87-95 w/one piece rear seal on two sites...
    and a 350 from years 86- 88 on another.
    Kinda confusing

    C237... looks like March 23, 1987
    V0403SNR might be V0403SNB... Flint Apr.03 / 87 Camaro 700R/TPI

I gotta find out what year the TPI unit is so I can get the right wiring harness. I'm getting the feeling it's a '87 motor. I gotta look at the TPI.

    350 engine, March 23, 1987 casting date

Flint MI engine ***embly plant, ***embled April 3rd, SNR I can't find any info on this suffix...but obviously it's the 220 hp B2L 350 TPI engine.

1987 pontiac firebird ***embled in Norwood Ohio

    Hope this helps!

  14. Yes, it does help. I found suffix SNA & SNB go to a 87Camaro. That (2HN235508) goes to a Firebird??? Hmmm... that would be cool! I'm getting the feeling I need an 87 wiring harness. Thanks.

on the partial VIN, 2 means Pontiac division (1 = chevy car), H is the year 1987, N is Norwood, Ohio.

As far as I know Pontiac only put TPI 350s in firebirds...and F bodies were made in Norwood, so it's reasonable to say that it's from an 87 firebird.
