I got the shifter on my 51 fleetline stuck in 3rd gear (235 - 3 speed on the column) I guess the linkage must be jammed. I havent had a chance to take a look yet, but does anyone have any suggestions on what's probably gone wrong and how to fix it. I thought I read somewhere to disconnect the rods and put the forks in neutral and the shifter in neutral and then hook everything back up Thanks guys!
Did you, by chance, slow down to a stop without downshifting into second? For some reason, '40-'54 Chevy transmissions don't like that. I've known a couple guys that locked them in high gear that way. Once the vehicle was rolling again, they'd shift. We just revved 'em up and slipped the clutch enough to get them moving, and they came back out of gear.
always a problem, just open the hood and take a screw driver to the linkage at the fire wall that will get you on the road again, then replace the worn bushings to fix the problem. no one has ever driven an old chev without learning this
happened to me with a floor shifter. i had to remove the floor cover and pop it loose, i think it was worn shift forks. i replaced it with a t5, now it shifts fine.
Any suggestions for source for replacement bushings? I have 66* C10 having similar problems. I get only 1 and R, sometimes nothing. I would like to fix the shifter and drive it as is for a while. *hope this qualifies for a year exception; I think the same issues/parts are 61-66.
