Hi yesterday JP responded to a post from a HAMBer who called out our shop and MWM from Hot Rod Surf with a list of lies and distortions about us. When we came back and checked responses the forum was closed and a bunch of guys asked for our response on the story. So since we can no long post in that forum I am giving an official response to any one who wants to know what going on with us. First our business treats people who enter with the same respect they treat us with and also we have never refused any one because of their race, color or beliefs- we love that the world is made up of different charters and believe that is what makes the scene so unique and great. As a side note I joined the HAMB as a personal forum not to be a business forum for my shop. As for the guy who clams he brought us a poster. He actually brought a poster with stolen art and our name on it. We told him we could not use a poster commercially with some else’s hot rod art on it, who he did not know and did not even ask permission. This same person then continued to come to our shop and shop parties for years and then wrote lies about us on the HAMB?! Hopes this cleared the air. I have joined the HAMB with hopes I can meet a bunch of cool hot rodders and check out out all the project and events that are going on with you guys.

Mark of Hot Rod Surf, who is not a HAMB member, released a statement about some of the issues brought up.

    HAMB members and all interested,

John and Jeff brought to my attention issues which came up recently on your bulletin board (when they decided to join). I would like to begin by saying Hot Rod Surf is better defined by what it is rather than what it is not. HOT ROD SURF is a business and a lifestyle brand which focuses on having fun, enjoying the traditions of the beach, hot rod, and motorcycle culture- which include vintage steel hot rods, surfing, motorcycles, and girls- an overall good time for those into it.
For years we ran our business with a surf shop in front and a hot rod shop in back. All of the early Ford vintage steel hot rods listed on our site were built at our shop by me personally from the frame set up, welding, painting, grinding, chop tops, z’ing, fitting to custom wiring harnesses. The only things which where outsourced were radiator shortening/recoring, the balancing drive shaft and tires, and the occasional tuck and roll interior. Each of these Hot Rod Surf hot rods where then extensively driven as a daily driver before being sold to a wanting enthusiast.
In reference to the history of Hot Rod Surf- I started my business with one of my best friends at age 22 with $500 and lived in the shop for the first year. That is how Hot Rod Surf was started- with elbow grease and 100% commitment. All of the Hot Rod Surf Pin-Up photos, some of which I have noticed have been copied from our site and posted on the HAMB in various forms, where taken by Jeff and myself at my shop and around our neighborhood. Over the years we have dealt with all sorts and types of people which has for the most part been interesting, adventurous, and fun. Our website is free and has been visited by over millions of unique visitors which have found some sort of interest or inspiration from what we have created.
In reference to ‘the poster incident.’ I do remember someone coming into the shop show room with a bootlegged Hot Rod Surf poster with someone else’s hot rod on it. Imagine the business you are in, what ever field, and someone taking a compe***ors product and putting your business name on it- and thinking it’s ‘cool.’ For the record I have never issued verbal threats to anyone in any way shape or form- I don’t have to and never will. Our hot rodders BBQ’s has always been a free event, open to the public, and fun for those into the shop and the Hot Rod Surf scene.

Over the years we have had tens of thousands of stoked customers from our online shop, storefront, and auto show booths. Refer to our recently opened Ebay auctions if you would like to read some of the many uncensored positive feed backs.

Hot Rod Surf has always been about action, the thrill of the ride, and doing what you love.

Here are the six reasons we could not respond quickly to yesterdays postings.

*It’s V-day and I got to get out of the shop and take care of the old lady…so I wont be responding tonight just wanted to let all know what was going on since so many people commented on it.

That ****s dude. Hope you don't get a bad vibe from the HAMB over this. There's many more on here that are great guys, than are dumb***es! Ryan runs a tight ship. The dummys don't last long. I'm gonna have to go and visit one of those BBQ's. Maybe bring some friends.

Well, here is MY take on this... I am originally from San Diego, and moved away when the scene was falling into the pink scallops and billet rims, those were my high school years at Mission Bay High, and HATED every bit of 1984, so I understand that starting a "traditional" shop in S/D is hard on a $500.00 budget, BUT with that said, being here on the HAMB is like your liscense... You have to "earn" your place! I have read BOTH sides of this story, along with the older Tinys shop thread also, and in this place The HAMB... IT IS NOT BUYER BEWARE!!!! We are here as a service and helping place for each other !!! I have traded and bought several things here and all 3 recent items were SENT TO ME ___BEFORE___ I had sent the payment or the traded part!!!!!!! Now, HRS --I don't know you, although I have scoped out your web page and have seen the ads in the rags, but around here the old saying: "bad publicity" is better than NO publicity doesn't work like it does elseware!!! Believe me word of mouth (NOT RUMORS) around here get around FAST!! So right now to amend things you should (in my opinion) be a stand up guy and address the issues at hand in the first post, NOT direct the person to contact you thru your "E-BAY" email. A heads up... most around here BUT NOT all, DO NOT LIKE E-Bay!!I am NOT stirring up **** but feel that since I am a "fellow" San Diegan ( I am actually in the proccess of trying to move back down there) I would give you a little back-up!! I cruise in lows, tail draggers, and have a long *** chopper, so if it all works out you are in the right place , BUT if not: ****-YOU<---- now that is only meant if you try ****in' people over NOT if your kool with everything I hope this helps out a little, sitting here drinking makes me want to get everyone to get along, normally I hate everybody!!! Those anger pills, (or parole officer) must be helping?!?!?!...peace, Ken

The first issue was addressed 2 months ago when he got the produt he ordered. We didnt comment on it since that post was old. JP addressed him through the bussiness and never want to take bussiness we do to the HAMB. We sent off the product with a tracking number and he got the product after the mail took a few weeks. I think he was just excited to get his part for the car, I understand it always ****s waiting for a part when you are excited to put in your rod.

To all of you reading this thread,

I am only going to pipe in my $.02 worth of experiences with these guys. I do NOT know them personally but have bought alot of miscellaneous stuff from them over the past 6+ years, used and new......They always worked with me as a customer in a courteous and professional manner,They have always delivered what I had ordered from them in a timely fashion and when there was a problem they made right on it.

In fact I had less than 2 weeks ago ordered some risers for my bike from them and had them within 2 days....they're on my bike now

I am only in hopes that if the other thread caused any sort of doubt about these guys' business practices that my post here will lessen any kind of black eye that was attempted here.

I agree with giving someone a chance, but before I would consider it I'd like a little explaination on comments from JP of HRS......(Just joined the HAMB and see we have comments. We are bikers and hot rodders and are not nice to everyone.-JP.(comments edited)). JP, could you please explain this to us HAMB'ers that do not think that being a biker or a rodder gives anyone a right to not be nice to any customer? I'm not from your neck of the woods, but I know damn sure that this type of a at***ude where I work and in my own shop would not get me very far at all....and I'm sure it would cost me a lot of business. JP you can pm me if you want...but your reply out here on the forum might be the best. Thanks Al a.k.a 333 Half Evil

So, your saying the very first guy, Jagerbomb, who stated he had still not gotten his parts yet, and it has been MONTHS, is not telling the truth? Come on, you expect us to believe that?? A HAMB guy does not start a thread about missing, paid for parts. Send the guy his parts.

Quote from Jagerbomb, and HAMB member for 1 1/2 years with a couple hundred posts:

"I hate to air out my dirty laundry here, but was wondering if anybody knew or could vouch for the guys at HOTRODSURF dot com?

Heres the quick of it. I bought a steering gear from them on ebay on 11-15, and a few days later get a message from them saying its on the way. Long story short, still dont have it, and its holding up further progress on my project.

I tried callijng the number on the website, which just referes you to email, and when i email i get no response.

Was wondering if i just got F'd, or i should be a little more patient."

    I wonder who's telling the truth???

First of all, I looked up the steering box that this customer bought from us on ebay back in Nov of 2006 and it was sent out on Nov. 20th USPS Parcel Post (tracking# 9102010521297793073923) and he recieved it on Dec. 5th. It took a little while to get there but he got it. I guess you can ask him yourself if you like. He left us positive feedback and so did we.

In responce to my previous comments on the other thread about being bikers and hot rodders is that we are stand up guys. Because we are into choppers and hot rods does NOT give us a right to be mean to a customer, but we are going to say what we feel and be honest about it. I hope other rodders and bikers do the same and in some way it seems this forum is a good way to make different peoples comments heard on an event/rod/chopper/custom/build etc.

My girl lives in San Diego, I go there as much as I can.. I actually was looking for your shop last time I went, didn't DEADBOLT play there not to long ago???? I got lost trying to find your shop, well what disturbs me about the last post is the way you treat customers, and the accusation that they put on your shop about being racist? So me being of non-caucasion origin and I travel there often, I may just drop by (secret shopper) and buy something, then I'll make my conclusion!

Another vote for the issues with these guys being dead. Seems like quite a few miscommunications, misunderstandings and maybe even some fabricated stories in the previous thread. I think it's good that this thread exists so the air could be cleared and eveyone can go on with life...

... I say welcome to the HAMB all over again and I'm sure we'll appreciate your input around here!

HAMB drama never dies... LOL! I even find myself getting ****ed in from time to time!

    Cheers!

If that's REALLY what you wanted you shouldn't have used your SHOP NAME as your handle- or came on just to defend yourself- seen a lot of them come and go REALLY fast that way. Anyone remember Barry White and his wife both signing on to defend their shop? Seen them since????

I ran the tracking number. The report states:

Your item was delivered at 5:59 pm on December 06, 2006 in OKLAHOMA CITY, OK 73116.

    Trust, but verify.

As all of us that own a business know, there are those people who love you and those people who hate you.

Seems like more than a couple HAMB'ers have nothing but good things to say about HRS.

If someone where to come into my shop and offer me a poster with what I perceive to be stolen artwork and my shop name on it, you have now put me in a position of risk that I have not been given the chance to accept or decline.

Wanna guess what I'm gonna say? I might not piss the guy off to the extent HRS did but none the less, I'm not sure I'd want that hanging in my shop/office either.

Not taking sides here. ****, I don't know what really happened, nor do I care. I do however hate to see a business owner thrown under the bus on the word of young'un.
