I want to paint this rod flat black prime, but I understand that it will not hold back moisture. I don't like the Hot Rod Flatz, still too much gloss. So, here is my question. How about putting down the finish coat first, to seal against moisture, and then topping it with the desired flat black prime. Anyone ever do this? Will it work? What are your thoughts? Bob
i have to agree with the kustom kings c c if you base it black then add flatnner to your clear it will not only seal it but will also look the way that you want it to. pullinlines your pinstripe buddy from indy
Checkout www.squeegskustoms.com They have an epoxy primer that will seal out moisture and is ROCK HARD. If you reduce it, it sprays REAL nice but will give a shine. Do what I did and hit it with a scotchbrite pad it'll make a really nice durable satin finish. ABOVE the beltline, scotchbrited BELOW the beltline, AS IS
There's also this stuff called "Hot Rod Black" from Kirker paint. I've never used it, but it sounds like it may be a good option. http://www.kirkerautomotive.com/html/hot_rod_black.html
John Deere Blitz Black Gallon p.n. TY25669. Try a quart first. They recommend using their thinner. Might be what your lookin for.
THIS TRUCK IS SO FREAKIN AWESOME!!!! So awesome, I'm actually thinking of buying my Uncle's truck just like it and making a flat kustom out of it.
My 2 cents... DP90, and any other epoxy, will chalk out with long-term exposure to sunlight (UV). I agree with fatflatty that the best way to achieve the right look is to base it black (or the desired color) and then flatten the clear to the desired flatness. Just know that you'll have to paint it well as you won't be able to sand out any runs without losing the flatness.
I used dp90 primer and delstar black with the flating ajent in the black and it came out looking alot better then any primer job I have ever seen do it right the first time you only have to do it once
I did my model a with dp90 before they had the lead free **** and i thinned it with laquer thinner and it was a semi gloss and looked great. I was actually accused of armoralling the whole body !! But its still primer and i dont care what anyone says its not long term. It is long term with the proper top coat.. Dave
