I picked up a couple of early issues of Car Toons at a swap meet awhile back and got to wondering about the first issue. One of mine has a two-page introduction to Carl Kohler and another to Pete Millar. I know Kohler left after the first issue (according to Hot Rods history of the magazine), so this one could be the first or second; does anyone know? There aren't any dates on the pages anywhere but there is an ad on the back for the 1960 Trend Custom Annual. The funny part is I still remember some of the panels, but I don't remember the issue itself. Some things always stay with you I guess.

Pete Millar's widow is a member of another group I belong to. I'll forward your post to her and see if she can help.

  4. I'm thinking that they started somewhere around '59 or 60. The first issue I ever had was '62 my dad got me one for my birthday, then a subscription after.

Funny thing is that over the years they ran several of the panels more than once filler I guess?

I actually had no idea they went that far back, I was actually ***uming it was started in the late '70s. Not sure why I had that date in my head.

On a sad note, I heard that Shawn Kerri (female) died of cancer. I used to like her comics best. Well, behind Kr*** and Bernie of course.

    Here's Trosley's CARtoons site. http://www.georgetrosley.com/cartoons.html

In fact, I believe he posts here as Troz.

The one on that site labeled 1959, the guy about to pop a paper bag, is the first. Main story is the Rumpsville saga...kind of a non-virtual HAMB-like utopian community! I've got two copies of that!

I think this one does have the Rumpsville saga in it; a good use for Catalina Island. I'v looked through the whole thing and can't find any date, so it could be the first if the 2nd issue is dated. I'll check tonight again. Wasn't a bad buy for $3. each. Thanks, Rob

My Favorite was Unk and them Varmints.
I being a kid in the 60's, the only place I could find
Magazines, was at the grocery store. I was limited to Hot Rod, Car Craft, and Mad
(not a bad selection) I always got my Car toons fix was when we visited the UP of Michigan.
The small resort we stayed at, had games and books you could take back to your
cabin. It also had a stack of comic books. Inter mixed were copies of Car Toons !
Thanks to the person that would leave a new batch each year !!

I have a couple of 1964 issues.....There are some Kohler stuff in the 80's mags, not sure if it's the same Kohler you mentioned....
Anyone know when the LAST issue was??? I'm not positive but I think I have one....1991/2...I'll have to check.
My favorite mag growing up during the 80's.....

  14. Sounds like #1 to me.Here's a pic of the early ones I have.These are issues #'s 2,3,and 4.

Here's what Mrs. Millar had to say:

"I BELIEVE THE MAG WITH THE ARTICLES ON PETE AND CARL ARE FROM THE FIRST ISSUE. IT WAS A FUN TIME WATCHING THE THE TWO OF THEM DISCUSSING AND WORKING ON THE FIRST ISSUE. THEY HAD A GOOD TIME BUT THEY DIDN'T KNOW IF IT WOULD GO OVER OR NOT. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO WATCH PETE THROUGH ALL HIS YEARS OF CARTOONING AND THE ATTORNEY WORK, HE ENJOYED THE CHALLENGE MORE THAN ANYONE KNEW.
    HOPE I ANSWERED YOUR QUESTION"

Thanks for the help. Big thanks to Mrs. Miller for the response, too. I didn't keep any of the old Car Toons issues when I was a kid, so now I've got 2 again. They're still great.

Pete Millar was a genius ...

  21. I will give a big AMEN to that;he was one of my first influences when getting into striping circa 1955.The funny thing is I spoke with Pete shortly before he p***ed away and he told me that the one thing he was always amazed about was people who could stripe! He said he had tried it many times with no success at all.

Here are a couple of pics of my tribute to Pete on my Safari.
