I can understand a coup or a fourdoor. BUT why to a convertible.? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercury-51-Mercury-Conv-Custom-Project-with-Hemi-James-Dean_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6882QQihZ007QQitemZ170082108997QQrdZ1
Yeah, what's your beef? It's his/her car & they can do what they want to it. Grafting a Merc to a 'late model' ch***is isn't anything new. It's been done for over 20 years now, at least.
can't see any problems with this motor...... over here people would give body parts for a cool looking motor like this. you wouldnt keep the interior anyway so whats the problem? Nice conversion by looking at the pictures but yeah, loads more work to do but worth it!
White&Nerdy, Are you complainin' about the interior, letting it set outside under a worn tarp for years, or..........???
that car is a great starting point, throw out those late model seats, and work in a good looking interior, and you are set!
I'm not sure what anyone is complaining about. Swapping frames is tons of work on a car like this, and it seems to have saved a rusty convertible, so what's to complain about? I'd want to know that the work was done well and that there's no problem ***ling the car, but otherwise, it's OK. I hate the late-model steering wheel, but that could changed. The interior doesn't even bother me much. Imagine those (power) seats reupholstered in white pearl or black tuck and roll. Have some imagination, guys. No need to s**** them. So Punx-r-us -- what WAS your original complaint?
Left turn does these kind of swaps all the time,I think with olds ch***is tho,and he turn outs some pretty nice customs,Just recover the seats to something a little more traditional and it would be a *****ing car...
Me and Haring are seeing eye to eye on every level of this "build". I like it alot, everything except the steering wheel. Those seat look mighty comfy. This Merc would make an awesome cross country cruzr and so far the price is way below market value.
I guess im just not a big fan of the ch***is graft, probly cause when there bad, they are really bad. But when looking at this one a bit more, they did do a good job. It just pains to see the rare converts being cut up. BUT! I do remember someone saying that when the floor is all rotted out (like this one was), its easier to graft a whole new ch***is on that rebuild the suspension and weld in a new one. There was no real beef, just kinda sad to see that the car had gotten that state. Hope it goes to a good home. Rex
I don't agree...In my opinion after you do a frame swap..you are driving an 81 Caddy across country...not a Merc. And another thing, I hate when people say "Well, now it's modern and won't break" Its a 1981 Caddy. So you're saying that an 81 Caddy won't break...hmm that doesn't make sense to me. And if people think its easier to get parts for a 81 caddy. Im not sure, but i think it might be equal or easier to get suspension parts for a merc...and **** its easier to fix than a 81 caddy! And without a frame swap you dont get the *** column and wheel!! And alot of times when people do frame swaps the wheel base is too long or too short or the front wheels stick out to far, and to me, that ruins a merc!!!!
I dunno... this looks pretty good to me. Doesn't look like the wheelbase is off... the tires tuck nicely. Other than the interior... this looks like a pretty damn nice car. I've never driven this year Merc or a 1981 Caddy... but I'd be willing to bet that the Caddy drives a tad bit nicer than the Merc could ever hope to.
I don't know about that...and if you're into comfort, why not just drive the 81 caddy with the stock body?
And why not wear holey BVDs and a sloppy T-shirt to the supermarket. That's a lot more comfortable than danged ole pants anyday...
I'll tell you what, you're just not happy about the Merc/Caddy marriage at all are you? How's about this -you buy the Merc form eBay, post a thread *****ing about what a ****ing butcher job it is and how you got ripped off. Then post a thread berating us all about how stupid we are for thinking that a more modern driveline in any Merc is a good idea. Then you can post a tech thread about how you, keeper of the "holier than thou Merc faith" saved this poor wayward unholy Merc when you convert it back to pristine factory specs. Then you can post a thread about how F'ing much some 'goldchainer' wants for the factory Merc parts he's taking off of his stocker while he turns it into a pastel nightmare and that all his type are jack***es because they won't give you their old Merc parts. Would all that make you happy?
considering the ch***is under a 49-51 Mercs is pretty much useless, I would do the caddy. it's not even a comfort thing..it's a "doesn't ride like a covered wagon" thing.
Well ****....now I just don't have anything to say.......You tell'em . What is it with being traditional that says we have to live in the dark ages. I don't know about you but there is something about comfort that works in and old luxury car. Anything swaps are what we do. A dodge body on a duece frame.....a hemi in a tudor....What the **** swap what ever you want as long as you keep some taste about it and if you happen to live here on this board keep it in the traditional style!!!!!!
That looks good so far as I can see cept the steering wheel, So what is the differenc between swapping thw whole ch***is for the caddy and putting a custom built ch***is with mustang 2 frontend, ford 9 inch and a crate motor. the caddy swap looks more traditional to how it was done using what you got for the swap
Not really, considering that its still mostly 51' Mercury. How would you describe the *********** of parts that make up most Customs/Hot Rods then?
AMEN brother! I personally like the idea of a reliable updated smooth riding ch***is alongside the Hemi engine and way cool Merc convertable body. Each to his own I geuss. "can't we all just get along!" LOL
Geez dude...Why are you sniveling?...I hope your next door neighbor buys it so you have to see it everyday...There is nothing wrong with that car (seats need redone but they beat the hell outta 5 gallon buckets)..Caddy driveline sure is better then it wasting away in some field. Lets see pics of your custom Merc!.
Same way I feel. I considered putting my '64 Ford on a '77-'79 T-Bird ch***is to take advantage on the improved suspension geometry until 1951MercMan talkedme out of it. Rodders aren't restorers. We strive to "improve" cars, not diss those who do. Jan
