i went to the junkyard today to pick up a 40's f1 spring to use on the 42 merc front end i'm putting on the t bucket. this is the only yard in kalispell that has anything older than the 70s. but 90% of the stuf he wants high dollar for. i decided to take a few pictures for you guys here on the hamb, i would have taken more but the damn batteries died.
Yep, that place is a blast to visit. just be ready to pay handsomely for his stuff. that's why most of it is still there. When you walk around there in the summer you can see inside most of the cars and get a good look at all of the small parts laying inside them. Larry
I'm surprised to see that yellow 49/50 F1 still sitting there. I almost picked it up as a parts truck 6 years ago......I just drooled over the older stuff.
went through a couple years ago on my way to browning for a big 600+ car auction and the guy did me right for some wheels & tires for my 55' pontiac 2dr wagon i bought at the auction. the guy might seem high on his stuff but he told us come by at beer30 with cash and he would deal with you. we spent 3 hours there hard to beat montana tin!
he won't sell it or any parts off of it anymore, he decided he wants to rebuild it. his prices for some of his stuf is outrageous. he wanted 500 dollars for a 57 chevy cab with doors, hell i paid 800 for my complete truck and drove it home.
Thats some nice stuff! It seems this is whats happening to the yards that are left. My friend went out to Kansas for an auction and hit a couple of junkyards on the way home. He found some really nice stuff but, the owner wouldnt part anything out. He wanted to sell him complete 4 door cars as builders for top $! Everything he asked about no thats a builder not parting it out. All he wanted was front clips, bumpers etc. His whole trip was a bust.
Where in Kalispell is the yard and what is the name? I get up the flathead every so often..... It would be cool to see what he has. Gregg
Thanks for the pictures. Brings back good memories of visiting the junk yard when I was a kid with my uncle (no bees or snakes in the winter). Love it. PM'd ya.
i saw a couple of flatheads with aluminum intakes while i was there, i thought all the flatheads had cast iron intakes. are these a rare item? or maybe just something for high elevation cars.
It's in Somers. Do you know where the intersection at hwy 82 is just south of Kalispell? Coming from Missoula you hang a right like you are going to Bigfork. go about a half a mile and its on the left. its called Flathead Salvage. Larry
About a 8 hr drive to the northwest. Do you know where Glacier National Park is? Kalispell is only a half hour drive from there. Larry
all have to check this out I am heading out in a few weeks my bro lives right by there and I didnt even now it..
Montana rules. We move out of state in 86, but I still consider myself a resident. This is but one reason why.
ZZat is a very rare 33 Dodge delivery, How do I know this? I sold it to him (kicking myself in the Ass) about 15 yrs ago, when my dad sold his place I had no where to store it, I paid $35 for about 27 yrs ago and sold it to him for $750, looks pretty much the same, passenger side is rusted thru around the panel and the corner from the panel to the rear door is also rusted thru
I will be in Billings before Speedweek and would like to cruise by there before going to Bonniville. so it sounds like a detour will be in order
No they're not rare. Every once in a while they show up on flea-bay. As I recall they randomly appeared on 37'ish flatheads, give or take a year or two. Nothing magical about them - mostly garage art.
I know right where it is now! I've Driven by it, i don't know how many times and have never stopped. Thanks for the info. Gregg
That's a helluva detour my friend. You're looking at 4.5 hours drive from Billings to the junction of Hwy 93/I90 north to Kalispell which is another hour or better depending on traffic. When you're in Billings try going out to A1 Johnson's auto wrecking on Grand Ave.... lots of their old stuff is pretty picked over but there's still some good parts and what not. Or there's a yard in Whitehall, MT, which is about 3 hours from Billings all Interstate called Freeman's Auto. Lots of good stuff but kinda steep. Look him up on the net I think he has a website. Wow, I didn't realize we had so many Western MT Hambers on here, back in like 01-02 when I was on the HAMB there were maybe 4 in the whole state. We'll all have to get together sometime this summer or somethin'
Fremans Auto, 138 Kountz road, Whitehall, MT 59759. fax 406 287 9103 If you call or go to Fremans Auto, do not tell him you are going to use the parts on a hotrod or that you are even into hotrods. The guy who runs it and answers the phone is only into restorations! I've had him tell a friend the parts are not for sale to anyone who isn't going to use them on the car as the factory intended. My friend waited a few months called back and bought those same 1949 merc parts but omitted offering the owner any details on the build. Oh and his prices have always been out of reach for paycheck guys like me. s.
