Well Sunday is my birthday and my wife is getting me a powder coating system (my wife is about as bad at keeping secrets as I am at keeping money). I was wondering what the general opinions were on the best low-mid range powder coating system for home/small shop use. I have looked at the Caswell Plating system, the Eastwood (HotCoat) system, and the Chicago Electric (harbour freight) system. Which is considered a more reliable system gravity feed or siphon.

Myself, I've been leaning towards the Craftsman system. I checked this unit out at SEMA this year and was impressed with how it was configured, the quality of output on the powder coated parts, etc. I haven't been into a store lately to see if they are carrying the powder material, assuming that they will, this makes picking up some powder for your project on the weekend very attractive. http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/prod...rs&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&sid=IOx20060405x0000099
I've heard and seen great result with Eastwood's system and am actually looking for an oven for the garage now to get one myself.
I don't like the way the Craftsman cup is done. Kind cheesy really. The Top Coat (Eastwood) is cool, that's the one I ended up getting. The Harbor Freight one was a POS.... I vote Eastwood...
Another vote for keeping U.S. dollars in the U.S.- http://www.caswellplating.com/powder/pcoven.html Their ovens are made here, I'm not sure about the other stuff. I called but they are closed because of the bad weather in N.Y.
I bought the Eastwood set up several years ago, before they went down in price, and just had the plain-jane rig. I use it fairly often, and all the problems I have had were operator (me) related. I have bought powder from them and from different sellers on Ebay, and have always been pleased with the results. I use a regular kitchen over in the garage and can do just about any part I need to. I wouldn't trust the China/India stuff for this kind of purchase. Have fun with it, do a little research before you start, and it will be a piece of cake.
+1 for the Eastwood kit. That is the kit we use to powercoat the starters and generators here and cook it in a regular old kitchen oven. Works great.
I have the Chicago unit & has worked fine for me BUT I am not using it constantly. Most important thing is use only an electric oven & one that will not be used for food anymore. I do only small stuff so i wound up getting a large toaster oven that gets hot enough from a flea market for 5.00
You can just ask around and you will probably get a free home oven from someone who upgraded. You don't need the burners to work. My friend wanted to do his own stuff but hadn't till I told him this. In 2 weeks he had the Eastwood set-up and 2 free ovens in his shop.
do check out some new brands that seem to have hit the market in recent times. i have a chicago and i think it stinks. A friend bought this new 35 kv gun - supposed to give very good results - a little expensive maybe, but apparently works real well. talk to jeff at silverbear powder coatings somewhere in Athol, Idaho - this might be what you need.
I have the Craftsman system. It works pretty well, but the cups are a pain in the rear at times! I plan on upgrading to the Eastwood system here sometime soon. I would agree with most everyone and say go with the Eastwood system, they're prices on powder are pretty good too.
Eastwood has the original hotcoat gun on sale right now for $89 plus a free 1/2 lb single stage chrome powder. That's a good deal, hopefully it'll still be on sale come payday!
That stuff is liquid, not powder. Tech Line Coatings comes to mind. The majority of stuff in use today is"Sermaguard" or"Sermatech",or something like that.
A friend of mine has the Eastwood stuff and he likes it a lot. He has an old electric oven in his garage and does a bunch of little stuff for a lot people. Eastwood is a mile down the road from my place. Right here in the good ole USA. A lot of there stuff is just repackaged stuff (tools etc). They don't make manufacture anything on site. They seem to do a real good job with the HotCoat stuff. They sell a hell of a lot of it. Have fun, Smokey
Is it just me or was that a spammer? (1st 2 replies) Well my birthday is here! and it is official....I got the Eastwood Deluxe Starter kit. Thanks for all the opinions guys. I'll post some results when it comes in
Here's a tip on scoring an old oven for powder coating in the garage... Go to freecycle.org and find your local branch. It's free to join and there's tons of folks giving away old appliances. I get trailer loads of free appliances from my local one. I sell most of the stuff for scrap metal, but plenty of it still works fine, just ugly. Regards, Kevin
You'll be glad you got the Eastwood setup. I've heard the Harbor Freight one is crap. I've had mine for years. I got an electric oven for my shop and installed 220 outlet for it. I changed the plug on an old stackable washer/dryer and plumbed that in, using the same outlet. Keeps the wife happy that I don't use her washer, dryer or oven, and makes the shop that much more useful.
speaking of the oven...Just scored a "Roper" brand Electric range and rewired it to a 125v (110v) outlet with an old PC power cord.....and it works!!! Did a heat test on it for aver 3 hours at 550 no breakers flipping. I have dubbed it "Mr. Roper" Powder coated an "L" bracket and my buddies throwing knife for shits and giggles... for doing a 1/2-ass job in poor lighting..... it looks like a good 13/16's- ass job amazingly good coverage. and sooo damn simple
