I heard from two different people that Speedy Bill has decide to build a dirt track and a drag strip outside Lincoln. The rumor says he wants to hold some Old Geezer races (Sprint Car and Drag ) and it will function as a regular track the rest of the time.
Speedy Bill definately has the money and I think he probably has the Political clout if he should decide to do this.

Anyone know any more?

2. One nice thing about about Nebraska is that food they have there called "RUNZAS". Man, those are great! They kind of remind me of White Castle hamburgers ground up and enclosed in the dough and then cooked. That's one reason to live in Nebraska. Now, if they get that new track built, people will have two reasons to live in Nebraska!:D

5. i have lived in the lincoln area for the last five years, & this topic has come and gone for as long as i can remember.
i haven't heard anything about speedy bill, but i do know that the last time around was a few months ago when the fella who used to own the drag strip in scribner, nebraska was going to use his own land northeast of town about 10-15 miles for a new strip.
of course, the other local landowners threw a huge fit, arguing that the city is growing in that direction (it is) and that a drag strip would decrease thier property values.
there were stories in the newspaper, on the news, hell i even signed a damned petition at work one day!
...and then it all just faded away...
i'm sure it was knocked down by the city council, or some shit. rumor has it that this guy has more land elsewhere and is gonna try again.
until then we're just gonna have to settle for eagle raceway in eagle, ne. it's a pretty cool dirt circle track.
oh, yeah- runza sucks! what a gut bomb! not worth the trip.

Rumor also has it that Damon Lee, former editor of Custom Rodder and staff writer at R & C...has accepted a position with Speedway as media relations director...wonder if this has anything to do with the strip...???

This mite add some, from a local web site for sprint cars. UPDATE #2 - (2-15-07 @ 11:00 am) - FACT - The powers that be at Speedway Motors held a meeting last night to discuss their sponsorship plans for 2007. Recently, all sponsorships were put on hold...to the surprise of some of the drivers involved. It was decided last night that Speedway Motors will continue to sponsor Billy Alley, Danny Lasoski, and Jason Martin. All other sponsorships will be eliminated for 2007.

As said this has been quite a battle with the sound ,people near the track site home schooling, cemetary, you know alot of red tape, the states being assholes on the whole deal,as for the dirt track think that may be a rumor but Bill did go to bat at the legislature and told them theres more intrests in Ne. than just football thought that was pretty cool.

I did just find out last weekend (from the local Ducati dealer) that the road course in Hastings just opened last year.

Also, some info on the old Scribner, NE drag track website:
http://www.nemotorplex.com/
From the many different rumors I've heard, they are trying really hard to build a track near the interstate between Omaha and Lincoln. Man, it would be great if they did!!... or Speedy Bill - I don't care who builds the damn thing, just get it done and make it a 1/4 mile! There is another local track near Glenwood, IA that's only 1/8 mile..........

I got the inside tip they're going to use the stadium in Lincoln for some roundy-round midget's. Only V8's 60's.Offy 170's or Ertil powered, maybe another outboard engine or two will be allowed. I also heard that the start might be interesting, as they will start off running the I formation. All local cars will be required to be painted red with white numbers, all others can be solid colors, no flame jobs allowed. For fuel, all cars must be corn liquer powered, (got to keep the corn prices up) A sales ticket from Speedy Bill will get you $5 off admission, or a discount at Runza after the races.

I grew up in Lincoln and lived just a few blocks from the original Runza Hut (owned by the parents of the guy who now owns the chain). Ate MANY a runza made by the "real" folks.

The Runzas they sell today are pretty pale replicas of how they started out. Now they're mushy, half-baked things that stick in your throat unless you wash them down with a gallon or so of soda.

Not long after WWII, my mom and dad rented a basement apartment from a lady named Molly Miller who was a Russian refugee (of German descent). "Runsas" were a staple food for those folks and were basically the same thing as now, with just local variations in spices. The bread was made with potato water, and was the most time-consuming part of the deal.

My mom passed Molly's recipie off to my wife. We eat them often and they are universally loved by pretty much every member of our family. We use frozen bread dough, so they could hardly be easier to make.

Here's how:

Brown 5 lbs of hamburger with one large diced onion (I like my onions cut no smaller than 1/2" pieces). Add 2 shredded cabbages (again, I don't like mine cut too fine - the cabbage cooks down quite a bit). Cook until the cabbage is soft.

Drain, then add two tablespoons salt (seasoned salt if you prefer) - and pepper to taste (I like a lot). Some like to add garlic - I don't.

Buy a package of frozen bread rolls (white bread, not wheat). You can use slices of frozen loaves if you want larger runsas. Thaw the dough and roll it out flat. Spoon in a generous portion of runsa filling and pinch the dough together on the bottom (lay a slice of American cheese in before the filling if you prefer - we usually make some both ways).Place on a greased pan (not touching each other) and bake at the temperature shown on the bread package.

Remove from oven when golden brown and liberally spread real butter over the top (I just rub it on using the end of a whole stick). Don't skimp on the butter! Eat and ENJOY!

These are good summer and winter. They freeze very well, and heat up nicely in the microwave, so we usually make plenty of extras.

A popular variation (although not at all authentic) is to add Swiss cheese and mushrooms. Be creative.

Hot tip: Consume with mass quantities of chocolate milk - or Root Beer) and potato chips. Mmmmmmmm... (-:

There is a road course in Hastings now. It opened last year, owned by George Anderson. When this was originally proppesed ther was to be a drag strip built as well. I have not heard anything about that for awhile now, George had a big hassel to get the road course approved. It would be nide to get another strip built, as the one in Kearney is not a very good strip at all- very rough, part of the Kearney airport runway.

22. Thank You X DERELICT! That is a mighty fine offer!:D

Thank You STAN 292! I will "try" that recipe and see if I can do it.:D

In the midwest I could get Hires Root Beer & the jingle was "Hires To You" - I can't seem to find that out here. I'll bet that Hires Root Beer would go good with Runzas.

Not really making fun of the "Kearney Roller Coaster" as you put it, just stating the cold hard facts. Several years ago a club that I belonged to had some nostalgia drags there, ans after running 94 in the quarter, I decided anyone that would run at nearly 200 there had to have some very large balls. This track just should not be there.

I like to hear about new racetracks anywhere. It seems a shame for it to be such a hassle to get one goin' and keep one goin' in this day and age of land development.
Our beloved MoKan narrowly avoided being eaten up in a land development deal.
As for Kearney (for those of you who don't know it's pronounced KARNEE) I had occasion to race there in 98 when I was passing through that neck of the woods on vacation.
I didn't really think it was wavy but you could hear the slicks slappin' the cut lines in the concrete loud and clear.LOL
The return road going right in front of the grandstands is just too cool.
I had a great time there except for havin' to rerun the final against the "Buzzin' 1/2 Dozen" Dodge Dart.(red lighted by a couple of thou)

They have PROPERTY VALUES in NEBRASKA now??!?
Anyhow, I hope the rumor is true...I would love to see 1962 drag racing with a starter in Indian feathers and no damn digital clock thingies...
In fact, I hope he does it right all the way, and builds the place with a fleet of Cletracs and restored Cats with cable hoist blades, supervised by 90 year old Seabees!
