is there any kinda adapters out there to bolt a late model 250 straight 6 to my 3 on the tree tranny in my 53 chevy
The 250 has the same bellhousing pattern as any small block Chevy. You can adapt a Chevy to anything! Try Wilcap first, I don't have their info handy.
Offenhauser made that adapter bellhousing in the 60's. Stock 49-54 three spd trans bolts right up to it. You use all your stock parts, flywheel, pressure plate, disk, throwout bearing. Bolts up to any Chevy motor. I used it on my 53 in 1974 with a 327. Worked just fine. Tore up a bunch of trannies though hole-shotting it! Still got it. For the right price I might unload it.
if you don't mind let me know what you find out...i've got a 292 that i'm gonna put in my '53 and i'd like to keep the 3 on the tree for a little while, but from what i've been told i'd be better off finding a t-5 or 4 speed through the floor.... i guess its really ALL possible, just depends on how far you want to take it. take care. Chris
Sorry, I goofed. Can't use stock flywheel on that conversion. It's been so long since I did that I don't even remember if I used the original pressure plate and disc or not. It all depends if it will bolt up to a later model flywheel or not. You'll have to check that out.
There were such adapters, but I don't see them very often. It would probably be easier to find a three speed transmission from a '48-'54 Chevy truck, which has the correct bolt pattern to bolt up to a 292 bell housing.
use a 49 to 54 Pickup trans. It will bolt to the stock torque tube, and a stock later model bellhousing.
back on this....i picked up a '54 P/U tranny, and unless i'm retarded(it is possible) there is no way that bell housing will work on my 292. that or i picked up WHAT I THOUGHT was a '54 P/U tranny....heh....
I haven't tried this...... but why not look at making a sleeve to go over the locating ring on the 53 trans, to allow it to locate the gearbox onto the later bellhousing. The diameter of the hole on the Pre 55 gearbox is considerably smaller then on the post 54 and truck boxes. The input shaft diameter is the same length as the later 'boxes, and the spline on the clutch is the same. Use the clutch setup for the later engine and bellhousing. You will have to redrill your bellhousing for the gearbox bolt pattern. Like I said I haven't done it.... but it makes sense to me anyway.
that does make sense, although it may be more work than is needed....if i'm gonna go that far...i'd probably be better off just doing a rea-end/tranny update. thanks for the idea though, i'm gonna look at it when i get home and see.
you are probably stuck either going to the 235/261 or early gmc series engine or swapping the trans and torque tube if you keep the 250/292 series engine. It s just not practical to use the earlier trans with the later motor
yea i know...i'm just being impatient and wanting to drive it NOW! haha. but yea, i'm leaning more and more toward just doing the rear end/tranny swap. thanks.
When I was running a 270 or 302 GMC I used the stock bellhousing and bolted it to a common later Chevy 3 or 4 speed. I now have the same 4 speed that I had behind my last 302 behind a 350. I don't know if ant of this applies, but it seems like they bolt up. Never looked at a torque tube trans. RF
The right pickup 3-speed should bolt in at both ends of this swap--I think you bought the wrong lump. Also, the adaptor route should be entirely workable--bellhousing pattern and flywheel pattern are same on 250 as V8, all you need is to be sure you get the diameter of wheel that afits toi the 250's starter location--just count the teeth and match to 250.
