Today we'd call that a rat rod.

In 1957 it was just a pos.

 

It looks to have big & littles but in reverse.

 

They actually built stuff like that. Then again, this was probably...what...like a Chevette at the time?

Example-I own a "Kustom" built in the late 50's out of a late-40's Linc and a 53' Mercury. Looks like some mutant Gazelle/MG/1st Gen Continental. Probably wasn't that safe either.

 

Is that the heel of his shoe poking out through the floor?! Fred Flintstone? Crazy!...I love it.

Is there another person in the picture? There is like a creepy little girl head above his right forearm. Is that supposed to be there or are my eyes ****ing with me again?

 

This is no more a traditional hot rod than the rat rod of today is one.
In all times unknowing folks have cobbled together junk which was unsafe and unsound. A piece of **** is a piece of **** no matter what the times.

 

Looks like fun.....Scary fun....

 

If this was really an EARLY Crosley, a 2-banger, it was probably closer to riding lawnmower than Chevette...a 2-cylinder Crosley was way down from the compact niche, like a King Midget, barely a car at all.
Engine is a V8 60, but still a m***ive big block swap for that thing...body may be remnant of a Crosley (first generation, not the '49 type) convertible hacked into a more roadster-like look. Think 3-cylinder Geo Chevy thing with a 454 swap!

 

Yes, that is a little girl with pigtails in the yard behind him. Probably his sister looking at him for the last time as he hits the street.

 

I think you can see thr front of the shoe extending past the front of the body!

I'm guessing that Chevette would fall into the early 30's niche, or the Post-War Crosley Wagon things.

There is one I should go dig up a few miles from here.

I Betcha it got half way to the corner before a cop dragged the dude home by one ear, and his parents had the junk man come get it the next morning...

 

Unsafe, unsound and for a time, alot of fun. I bet for a short while that thing was a blast.

You mean IF it cornered and IF it stopped, don't you??

 

It probably didn't do those other things, but it probably stopped just fine, against the first solid object along its trajectory...

 

Or saying, "What did you do to my pedal car!"

 

I'm pretty sure it was driveable...but not safe.

Looks like a flat would cause it to rip your foot off.
