I'm taking apart a 1938 Ford Toploader to make a "39 style" trans. I'm trying to get the clutch fork off the shaft and I dont want to bugger-up the pin. Every other toploader I have taken apart i used a punch to do this, but usualy the punch breaks from being too small or the Pin mushrooms from using too big of a punch. Anyone have any tips? Thanks, Chris
This is going to sound like I'm being a complete ass but... could you just try using the correct sized punch? I drill the top off before I go after it with a punch and hammer.
Yes, that is crazy talk.. lol.. sounds like a good idea, and it might be,,,,the Pin is concaved {\/} (sorta like this) making the sides easy to mushroom out. I should probably browse different punches. For now it's soakign over night. What do you mean by "drilling the top off"? Thanks, Chris
I use heat. Heat the area around the pin with a torch - don't directly heat the pin. Then use your punch - it will come out - I have removed a few of them like that. Mike
I have a punch that works perfectly for this. It actually looks too big at first but it's the perfect size - just a few thousandths smaller that the pin itself. Carefully center it and a BIG sharp hammer blow starts it moving. I'm talking hand sledge and a serious commitment while completely trusting your aim.
its a tapered pin. if you try to drive it from the front top it will get tighter.i drill a hole in the bottom of the bell and use a long punch to remove them.
