I have a 1950 Ford Custom 2 Door Sedan and I wanted to put a Ford Modular Motor ( 4.6L or 5.4L ) under the hood . I know that I will have to replace the engine crossmember but everyone that I have seen coming from some of the vendors is a bolt in replacement and I am not sure if this will work on a full chassis car ? Any suggestions would be appreciated . Thank you ...

You might just be on the wrong board to get an answer to your question.....You could be on the right board to get a new one ripped.:)

with all the intended work you have planned, why not just make one yourself? a crossmember is going to be easier to make than some of the issues you'll run into putting the car together.

"'Scuse me while I whip this out..."

your 51 has the potential to be a beautiful car.

A ford Mod motor, however, is an UGLY motor, and since it has no chance of ever being a good looking motor, pick one that A- is easier to install and at the same time B-is more visually appealing. (and makes more power at a fraction of the cost) options include, but are not limited to...

    ANY MOTOR MADE BEFORE 1973.

if you wanted to stay really traditional...(here's where I get slammed)

    ANY MOTOR MADE BEFORE 1965.

and of course, there is always the venerable Flathead v8. the best darn looking motor ever built (and a strong runner with the right guts) you probably aren't gonna blow the doors off anyone without one.

Small Block fords (while sort of funky looking) make stupid big power for cheap. (302,352-well, sort of-) or y blocks (goood lookin! strong runnin!) or rebel against society and build a big F.E. (390! 402!)

or your "Bellybutton" S.B.C.- seen it ALOT, but bang for your buck...350 horsepower is about as difficult as falling off a log.

Nailhead...Oldsmobile...Hemi (even a little one)...big mopar...small mopar...caddilac...Pontiac...A.M.C... anything but that Mod motor. you are preparing to do yourself a great diservice by installing that.

    I have the solution;

    Forget the x-member.
Sell me your '50 and the flathead.
Take the money and buy yourself a new Mustang, they LIKE turbos.

You gotta know when to hold and know when to fold. If you're going to discard a "built" flathead for a mod motor - prepare for incoming shellfire HAMB style.
    Warning: Run-on sentence:
After they (Flathead People) get done screamin' at you, they'll want to buy it off you, not because they need it neccesarily, but because it will be considered a righteous rescue mission taking it from the unappreciative hands of a dreaded street-rodder, and then once in their possession, they'll yell at you some more, laugh at you behind your back, smile when they look at said flathead, and giggle some more as you go flying by with your need-for-speed mod motor, because you missed the boat on what building a traditional rod means, and will have left all that is good and holy about traditional rodding in the dust with your fancy mod motor.

Oh yeah, welcome to the board.:)

That was really well said! Sadly I think it's falling on deaf ears.

It is not falling on deaf ears . I like what i like . I am chopping the top , dropping the suspension and putting in a mod motor . You like what you like and I like what I like . Custom as beauty is in the eyes of the beholder . My other cars ar running old school motors . I wanted to do something new and different . That's all ....

It's the kinder gentler HAMB......I was being NICE........Where is GERM???

  19. Hey it's your car build it as you like...but if you put that motor in it and 20" rims don't complain when we call you out on it. Not saying the car can't be well built, designed etc...but here on the HAMB, well...we just don't give a fuck about that style (or at least don't discuss it here) Got it?

  20. Are you really gonna put twin turbos on it?

As far as the ugly, untraditional motor- I think I heard here on the H.A.M.B. that customs don't have the hood open anyway.

    Thanks,
    Kurt

Ok ok, Jokes over, we all know that late model Fords are superier to Flathead's in everyway. Lets stop busting his balls.

How much do you want for that old boat anchor?

The truth is man what you are doing isn't new and different. What the fuck do you think that the majority of those Billet, gold chainer cars are running. (chebbys) hahah no really newer style motors. Mods, Ran-jets, NEW Hemis. And your said "NEED4SPEED" is probably in about the worst car for that. What the majority of the people here are saying is "that there a thousand other "BILLET RODS" forums so your'e ?'s would be better suited and served there.

what he hell is a MOD motor? and how many carbs does it have again? :p

Put in a 350 and get it over with Dood

  25. Why not put the modular motor in the Merkur, Nova,International Scout or the 71 Buick . The 50 Ford really calls for a 289 with 4 webers or hilborn injection. Just to do something different.

A small block Chevy may be overdone, but it's a hell of a lot more traditional, and way better looking than a mod ford.

I guess some of the creations coming out of Rad Rides, Foose,Boyd's ,and ect. arent going to be accepted very widely by some here. doesnt mean they arent nice cars tho. (yeah, I know,... I opened a big ass can of worms)

build it how you like it, thats what customizing means to me, unless your getting paid to build it for someone else to their specs.its your car, your the only one that has to like it or understand it.

the mod motor may not have the basic asthetics of the flatty, but it makes up for it in other ways..... but then again,I think the boss 9 is a good looking engine, so just shows I dont know nuthin' :D

I don't really see nothing wrong with him dumping in some late-model FI engine. Not like hes running it without hood-sides or something.

Still...seems overly expensive and kinda pointless. Unless someone gave you a car with one in it. Too much wiring and other random crap to stuff away here and there.

There isn't anything wrong woth it at all. it is probably better discussed, for him at a different forum. As far as his questions. If anyone remembers he is wanting to know what kinda fab work will have to be done. He will prolly not find too many folks here that have that kind of experience.
