I won't go into great detail, but suffice it to say that I'm new to metal casting, and did my first sand casting today. It basically looks like a glob of aluminum, but I'm quite proud as my first foray didn't turn out nearly so well! Anyhow, just though someone here might get a kick out of my escapades... I sculpted this car out of wax, and used that as the form for my mold. If you want to read more about it, or watch the videos, go to www.henrysrodshop.com and www.carlsonskunkworks.com Hope you enjoy looking at the pics as much as I enjoyed casting the car! Ben
Hey, Your first shot looks great when I look on my trys at casting.... major pin holes, cracked plaster moulds, incomplete castings. I tried zinc and babbet and some lead, all bad. S****ey devils C.C.
I'm glad to see someone trying an almost lost art. If you haven't tried yet, try riddling (sifting) the sand that is right next to your pattern and the surface should come out smoother. It's somewhat rough because of the "boiling" of the wax. Also, try a "deg***er" (found in pellets and powder form) and the liquid will flow smoother. Now, for something to try next, use a wooden pattern and you could use it over and over. You can even make changes after inspecting the results of the pour. By the way, if you don't already know, a wood pattern requires a split mold, draft, runners, sprue and riser, etc. Have fun!! Bluedeuce
