After attending the drags at MoKan last year, i guess you could say i was bitten pretty hard by the " Spirit of the Bug". Those HA/GR cars had me hooked! Checking inventory of old parts as soon as we got back, we decided to get involved and build one of these cars. A few Waffle House breakfasts with Tom Culbertson and we were off. Tom Built our ch***is and fabed all the linkage, mounts etc including the aluminum body work. ( A lot of good ideas are discussed over a plate of cheese eggs ) The front axle is 37 Morris, the rear is 1958 Edsel and the engine is a 56 GMC bored oversize .125 for 322 ci. Trans is a old rusty GM three speed. ( dont feel the need for many gears) and steering is by Crosley. All parts were just there for the using and we are glad to say its all pre 1962. Just sitting in the car takes ya back a few years!!! More info on this entire build is on the ha/gr builder forum.
Awesome. Someday, when time and money allow (and after I've built myself a proper hot rod), my brother and I have kicked around the idea of building a Buick or Packard I-8 HA/GR. The stuff you guys do is really cool. -Dave
I am using a Buffalo engine plate and a chevy flywheel redrilled for the gmc crankshaft. The buffalo adapter engine plate uses a gear reduction mini starter and it works really well. For the lake wood we used a ford three finger pressure plate and clutch disc. A large early ford throwout bearing etc. Every thing seems to fit really nice. This engine came from a pulling tractor and has a howard roller camshaft, big valves and 12 to 1 Jahns pistons. Uses the big d cylinder head ( ported as well). Sounds really good.
Jim, you guys got some incredible stuff stuff going on in your shop!! Can't wait to see it run at the hamb drags. I'll have to get together with you and Tom...maybe we can make the run to Joplin with 'ya. We will see you at the car show Thursday and the rest of the week.
