Got a 1967 SBC 327 last weekend. Came with a free 1967 under dash A/C unit and the motor has a York / Te***seh compressor bolted to it. My question is can I convert this old York to work with 134a or should I s**** it and go find a newer compressor designed with 134a in mind? Hot as hell in Houston in the summer and my ride has got to be chilled.
Dont s**** it ,but I would run something like FREEZE-12 instead of 134. That way you don't have to do any changes, and that stuff gets way colderr than 134 does. If you want to change there is an adapter that lets you bolt a 508 style compressor to the york bracket. Later Shane T
yep thats right FREEZE 12 and just make sure its got oil in the compresser..........its just as good as r12........rooster
I ran 134-a in a york, It works but in traffic it will not make you cool....better to upgrade compressor or use the replacement R-12 stuff. Just make sure the stuff is not flamable.
I just did a quick internet search on Freeze-12 looks like a mix of two R-12 replacement chemicals some 134a and something else. Does not have propane or butane in it, as far as I can tell. Maybe that's the way I'll go. I just want to be cool and use the vintage under dash unit.
That's the way most of my conversions have gone. R134 requires a lot more airflow through the condenser.
Is FREEZE -12 compatable with freon that may already be left in the system. MY OT '88 Lincoln is abouut due to have some R12 added to blow ice cubes, I have a couple of cans left of the good stuff but would like to hang onto it. Also, is where is Freeze 12 available? I never heard of the stuff. Thanks for the info, Jan
Old air products sells a adapter to mount a sanden compressor to where a york/te***seh mounts,a modern compressor will not use as much power as those york/te***sehs will
