My nephew recently gave me a '58 Chevy stepside as a birthday present. It's two shades of primer, the body is fairly solid with very few dents. It needs cab coroners, the lower hinge pockets replaced and the p***enger door is kind of ratty. Nothing a mig, a little bondo and some primer wouldn't fix up. All the gl*** is there and in good condition, except for the drivers door gl*** is cracked. It was his daily driver until he pulled the engine and put it in his '71 Cheyenne. The turbo 350 is still there and we put a mid '70's Camero rearend under it awhile back. It also comes with the Camero clip if i want it. It'lll be awhile before i start on it, gotta finish the jeep first. It's going to be a daily driver so i want to keep it clean and simple. I already pretty much know how i'm going to build it, i just haven't decided if i should use the Camero clip or an aftermarket frontend like Fatman, Heidts, etc. I'm also kicking around using a firewall mounted master cylinder. So my question to you truck owners that have done a swap isn't a how to do it, there's lots of info around about how to do both swaps, but more of a how do you like your particular swap and would you do it different next time?
i did the camaro subframe swap and axle flip about 3 years ago and i love it. the engine, ******, and steering bolt right up to the subframe. it handles better than any other car i've had. i would go with this swap instead of a mustang II anyday.
I put a firebird subrame under mine and have no compaints yet. Although i havnt even driven it for a whole season yet so I may change my mind.
Cool truck. What is your mastercylinder set up? The Bronco tank looks like it worked out pretty good.
I've done alot of the subframe clips....the thing I dont like about em (80's ish camaro/vette/monte etc, their all fairly similar) is the crossmember and steering shaft limit your space for exhaust....other than getting creative on that and the core support their easy.... Now to mention your cab coroners....dang that cab must be dead or dieing if you need multiple coroners for the project, who wee...
I used a camaro subframe under my 53 Ford pickup...was easy and drove better than any daily driver I had.. Sorry your cab died..
I figured maybe running shorty headers might help with that. Not really. It's pretty typical of old trucks around here. It's actually in better shape than alot of newer trucks i've looked at.
I've got a stock 77 camaro mc and pedal. i just drilled the holes in the firewall and a couple under the dash and whole ***embly just bolted in. all i had to do was make the pedal about 2 inches longer. i've got full length headers in mine. cost me $80 at checker and they had them in stock. one side i had to slide in from the bottom, but they fit great.
I dont like the look of full length headers nor can I use them anyway seeing as my truck is so lo...the block huggers interfear with the x member on the driver side...you just gotta get a little creative...i JUST MEANT THAT IT WAS A pia NOT unachievable nope, that one went blastin over the top O' de dome @ 300mph
