I'm by no means a musicphile. I know what i like when I hear it, know what I don't like when I hear it, and might be able to tell you the name of the group or musician either way.
    But probably not.

I do a car show and swap meet the first sunday of every month. I'm about to go out and buy my own sound equipment so I can have music--the customers (attendees) want it, and you gotta give the customer what they want. In the past I've just turned on a big radio to the classic rock station, and ran a couple CDs that quickly wore themselves out. (Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Brian Setzer, etc.)
Some liked it, some didn't. Can't please everyone all the time, but I figure they don't have to like EVERY song, so I'm gonna go with a wide variety; Surf, modern swing/rockabillly, classic rock, a little '70s, etc.
I'll have to do "She's Real Fine My 409" and "Deadman's Curve" and "Wipeout" even though I DETEST '50s music at car shows. I also want to do Johnny Cash, Brian Setzer, Elvis, The BeeGees, recent remakes of "Mrs. Robinson" and "Black Betty." A little Zepplin, Steppin Wolf, etc.
In short, a little of everything, to cater to everyone that is into cars, from street rods to '50s hot rods to muscle cars.

So, all that being said, Can you guys give me some specific songs (and the artist), so I can download them onto the iPod I'm about to buy for this venture? I'll end up spending a bunch for the 'pod, speakers, amp, mic, docking station and song downloads, but it's cheaper in the long run than paying a DJ $500 a day to play music I can download! After two months of doing it myself, my investment is paid for.

Like I said--I know NOTHING about music other than what stations I've got programmed on my radio (and that's mainly modern alternative...and talk radio!)

And please feel free to just include your favorite--or "golden oldie"--classic and '50s songs. I need to come up with about 200-300 songs for a 2-day car show and then a 1-day show every month after that. I don't want to play the same songs every damn show...that's why I normally hate music at car shows; they play "Hot Rod Lincoln" and all the rest to death!

    Thanks for the help,

    Brad

  2. highway song- blackfoot
    highway star - deep purple
I love the night - blue oyster cult
In my thunderbird - freddy frog's
    Joe's garage - Frank Zappa
Living in America - James Brown
    Low rider -
    midnight rider - allman brothers
    hawaii 5-0 - the ventures
rockin' down the highway - doobie brothers
take the highway - marshall tucker band
the good the bad and the ugly - hugo montenegro

    train, train - blackfoot
    truckin' - grateful dead
white line fever - the mojo gurus
the ride - david allan coe

Car show music generally sucks. I am glad you are opening up to possibilities. While you are at it...think about letting people do 'iPod requests, where they hook up their iPods to your soundsystem and play their request...just a thought.

I have been going to my local Library and checking out CD's and burning them to my MP3 player, beats having to fork out cash and find out the CD sucks. A couple good box sets that would appeal to the masses are "Loud, Fast and out of Control" and "Hot Rod and Custom Classics" both from Rhino records, the first set is pretty much popular 50's rockabilly songs and the latter set being songs about cars. Whatever you do don't be the annoying DJ blaring the Doo Wop so loud it's making the speakers rattle, I've been to too many car shows with that scene.

the best of Dick Dale and his Del-Tones
The Reverend Horton Heat, Holy Roller, 24 hits
The Mezcal Brothers, Go Go Rhythm
Stray Cats, Runaway Boys, a retrospective '81 to '92
Lost Legends of Surf Guitar IV, Shockwave

tune it to 105.1 or 97.1 for 70's
tune to 102.9 for oldies. most the people i see at the meet will remember when these songs were hits.

Get some Eddie Cochran ... one of the best and underrated '50s rock 'n' rollers.

  7. In my area there are cruise-ins/car shows every night of the week May-October. To me there's nothing worse than some fat old guy spinning doo-wop oldies....
    Here are two things to check out that are really great;
Rockabilly Riot - Janis Martin, Ronnie Dawson, Carl Perkins, Roy
Orbison, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis, 22 tracks on 1 CD
Rockin Bones - 4 CDs, 101 tracks of all kinds of 50's punk,
rock-n-roll, and rockabilly. This is a very cool Rhino box set with
    a terrific book inside.
You can find these and a bunch more on Amazon. Many of the CDs
you can sample tracks before buying.

someone on here just turned me on to pandora.com. You can put any of these artists or songs in and it will play similar songs or artists so you could probably find a bunch of good music that way

Some good suggestions on here already, go with it, don't be afraid to mix up the different styles at random, some early R'n'B like Wynonie Harris, followed by a Surf track, then a Hillbilly tune from Hank 3 or Wayne the Train, then a Ramones or Clash track and then straight into a classic rock guitar number from the Who or the Stones, you'll soon notice how all this stuff has something in common, that it's all real music. Sure, not everyone will like everything, but someone in the crowd will always like every single track you play then and feel like your almost playing it for them if its one of their faves. You'll earn big respect in the long run.

Have any of yall hear the Reckless Kelly cover of Richard Thompson's "1952 Vincent Black Lightning"? You can check it out on you tube... Im normaly not a fan of covers, but check it out and youll see why I dig.

If I was gonna throw down the cash for an I-pod, or put together a list for a car show I'd make damn sure this song was on there.

Just don't play it too friggin' loud. Seems like every car show/swap meet I go to I'm auditorily raped by music that is way too loud. I can't even enjoy the show it's so loud.

Thats a huge problem with a local cruise night here in Fresno, the idiot DJ cranks the music up so loud you have to scream at people just so they can hear you. He wont listen to anyone about turning it down either................I think I'm going to "accidentally" plow over his speaker set up this summer.

I agree soooo much. I HATE hearing-impaired DJs at car shows.
I'm trying to figure out how to cover the show field with two speakers and 200' of speaker cable (hundred each), and not blast the hell out of the people near the speakers. It'd be ideal if I had 6 speakers or something, and if I could get them way up in the air (like on a roof), but that's not going to happen either. 2 speakers on tall stands is the best I can do at this point. It'll get better as I grow (and can afford some more speakers and more cable...but cable, new, is about $1 a foot!).

There's some GREAT songs and suggestions here. keep 'em coming! The plan is to have a BROAD range of familiar/fun music, and shuffle it. I've got one commercial for a Ventures record, too...I'll be adding more commercials and TV theme songs as well.

i, personally, don't think you can go wrong with anything from the misfits. some other quick suggestions, off the top of my head, are the living end, old 97's, can't really think of anything else right now...

  20. Don't forget to pay your yearly ASCAP and BMI fees in addition to purchasing the music and equipment. Since these will be public performances you can get into some trouble if you don't. I'd be surprised if the fees were over $300 yearly.

Do not worry about BMI/ASCAP, they will not pursue you. They target bars, night clubs, restuarants, and retail outlets.

I ran a mobile service for my fair share of weddings and proms and never had a problem.

Back to the topic at hand... http://music.download.com is your friend. Lot's of free punk, roots, rockabilly, etc MP3s. Update your pod software.....

You're getting some good suggestions here. But the most important thing is to mix it up. If you were to play 4 songs of any one genre in a row, you're going to annoy people. Don't get too obscure either. Humor helps also. There are some damned funny songs from all genres. Although profanity doesn't bother me, it does tick some folks off. I'd avoid that.

Cosmik Debris' suggestions pretty much have the variety I'd like to hear. Some of the stuff is not to my tastes, but as long as you have that wide of range of style, something I like will come up in a few minutes.

    My 2¢ worth…

I always like car shows when there is NO MUSIC. Yep.

If there IS music, then a low approach is preferred to the usual "Mustang Sally" on 12.

What about all polynesian instrumentals from the 40's, sort of a hot rodder's version of MUZAK.

  27. Go to WFMU and check out "Fool's Paradise With Rex Doane". Take a listen to his play lists. You might even be able to play them directly. Good and greasy.
