Hi everyone, its been a while... I am posting this for a friend who is not on here. He just bought a super clean 53 hardtop.. but the motor is shot. Just so happens he has a built 250 six out of a nova sitting in need of a home. SSOOO.... The question is, before we get started are there any issues to look out for, specifically clearance in the oil pan/ crossmember region? I know these motors have gone into these cars before, but We are on a schedule as he wants to take this car to paso and there is a ton to do with the rest of the car to make it cool.. any help ahead of time will be appreciated. oh yeah, the ****** and rearend are obvoisly gonna come out in favor of more highway friendly stuff, so dont worry about bringing that up.. Thanks fellas! -J.
I'm in the middle of swapping one out now in my 54, I was told it was a 250 but when we broke it down we found out it was a 230. I have been told the were pretty close. My old motor mounts are in the same place and so far i have no clearence problems. This may not help ya but thought i throw it out there anyway.
I think the only clearance issue might be the water pump.. Might need to get the shorter one. I think they are like $120?
The water pump will definitely br an issue, other than that I don't think there is anything else you need to worry about.
Yeah, the only thing that looks like it could be a problem is the sump on the new motor... Its more towards the front of the pan.. But even so, nothing that cant be fixed. Thanks fellas.
I am actually in the middle of the same swap. The engine I am installing came out of a 54 2 door ( originally from a Nova) so the clearance problems have not been an issue. (I have a 53 2 door)What I am trying to fathom out now is the linkage issues. Would anyone have any advice on what will work with the throttle and clutch linkage as well as the column shift linkage. There seems to be interference with the clutch and the shifters. Is the original bell housing the answer? I respectfully hope this is not a hijack. It seemed to me that these questions fit the post.
I'm in the process of doing this swap as well. Not really too concerned with the shifter as I'm going with a floor shift and an automatic. I've been pondering on the gas pedal and linkage though. As well as the clearence problems between the water pump and the radiator. So I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see what the experienced guys here have to add.
Hey man! I kinda took a break from cars for a while, so I havent been around here in a while.. But the bug got me again and here I am.. I have a few pics around somewhere of the grill mocked up in my 54 but I never got around to really doing it.. Still might though... I might actually put it in this 53, I think it would work out better anyway.. Thanks everybody..
Cool man, Im not sure about your clutch issues but the nova motor and original motor have different bolt patterns for the bellhousing.. So the old one wont work? Automatics are cooler for cruising anyway, dont have to take your arm off your lady to shift... As for throttle issues, my buddy has a small 4bbl on his motor mounted the same way as it would be on a v-8 so he can just hook up some kind up rod linkage or a cable... I cant remember if its an adaptor on the stock intake or an aftermarket deal.. but the carb faces the right way, easier that figuring out the stock sideways pull propaganda from the stock nova motor.. If thais makes sense I hop it helps..
250 is a little longer. had one in my 50, the radiator had to be moved forward. some pics http://50chevy.com/photos/june/DSCN0053
The water pump on the 230 i put in my 54 woould have not worked but we pressed the front pully/fan mount forward and i'm running a smaller pully one that is not as deep and i have no problems, all aligns up and i have plenty of room
I know this post is really old, but are there any pics of a 250 install?? Would like to see how it fits, and how much room it takes up. Pictures are a 1000 words you know! Also, is the exhaust on the driver side on a 250? Thanks!
