You have all the makings of a book.

I encourage you interview your dad and anyone else you can, and actually publish this book. People will buy it.

flatoz -- Great pictures and great stories with plenty of memories. Makes me think of my mother's story. My grandfather had just sold his corner grocery store and had bought a new model T Ford. He decided to take my mother and explore the United States (remember this is the 1920s.) My mother mentioned that when they got to the Rocky Mountains, my grandfather backed up the mountains and she would walk along side carrying a large rock to place under the wheels in case the motor stalled to prevent the car from roling back down the mountain. At that time there were no guard rails and the roads were dirt, too. With a little experimenting, he was able to use a cut bicycle tube to be wrapped around the gas filler tube and pressurize it with a hand pump to drive foward up the mountain. They covered 46 of the then 48 states. Like others have mentioned. you should get with your dad and his buddies if available and record all this information on tape. This was one thing I regret that I didn't do. Again I really enjoyed your story.-----

  17. Absolutely one of the best H.A.M.B. threads ever! You have to post more pics.! You have the makings for one of the best hot rodding books ever. The pics are first class and I can only imagine the stories that go with them. Seriously, think about a book. Thanks for posting!! Those guys must have had the time of their lifes, I'm surprised none of them moved to the States for good.

  19. Wow! I was born in 1966! I love, love, love that flathead powered '34 at Bonneville! Wow! I know people say this all the time, but this is one of the best threads ever! Fantastic story. I'd love to know more about how some foreign kids come over and meet so many of hot roddding's biggest names. "Oh, just go over and meet Wally Parks" and he gives them season passes. Charmed lives. Great story.

This absolutely needs to be put to print, I know I'd buy a copy.

  22. The early slides of Cal Custom and the other kustom shops are amazing as well as the early shots of the legends of that time. preserve them well. Excellent post.

You need to take the slides and get them on a DVD. Ya'll have DVD down there by now, right?:) Just better protection. I'd hate for something to happen to them.

And yeah, it would be a cool book. You could interview some of the people that they met on the trip (Barris, Jeffries etc.) to see if they remembered some crazy Aussies stopping by. Sure, some of them won't remember, but some might have good stories.

Great post. Post more pics and stories when you get a chance.

Thanks All, but dont thank me!

This isnt about me, I'm just the means to get this up here. I have told the old man for a long time that people would be interested to see this stuff, its a great cross section of the hot rodding culture and American culture of the time.

Ironically, his computer is down at the moment or there would have been more stories, but he couldnt see which slide I was looking at. its a taste anyway, glad you enjoyed it.

Anyone else able to identify some of the cars? Thats cool I reckon

    cheers flatoz.
