I wanted to get a couple to transform into my air tanks for the bags for my car. Anybody know where to get these from????
Try this place: http://www.smithandedwards.com/ They are in northern Utah and have all kinds of surplus military items.
Not to highjack, but I like the idea of employing unconventional items to this purpose - does anyone know what the maximum pressure rating should be for an airbag setup?
Super cool idea. Hopefully I don't read about an overzealous bomb squad detonating your car with a robot.
That place said they didnt have them, but thanks for the try. As far as PSI ratings go, it all depends on what you want to do. For simple uses (up and down) anywhere between 120PSI and 180 PSI should work just fine. When I was in the minituckin scene I ran as much as 500 PSI out of a Nitrogen or Helium bottle to hop the shit outta my old truck. I would not recommend that!!! I broke a lot of stuff (valves, bags, engine mounts, links, etc).
Damn. That spoils my idea of using an old bomber (B-17 or B-24) oxygen tank for an air setup. Those are supposedly only rated for 120psi. Back to the drawing board.
Yeah I figured that surpluss stores would have them, but they told me that only specialty stores have them and they didn't know of any. I also have not found them at any surplus stores in the Sacramento area. Better yet, maybe someone has one that will want to sell it to me!!!
You guys dont look to hard these days. I found this in less than 5 minutes of searching and I have no idea who these guys are. www.omahas.com $129.50 1960's dated practice bombs. these were originally filled with water and sand and used by the army and airforce for target practice. Size is approximately 9" x9" x42" tall. Used with plenty of shelfwear and minor oxidation and rust. Fins are for the most part in very good shape with only minor bends or folds on the edges. Weight is approximately 24 lbs and we ship in a special box made for these.
what about that aircraft/military graveyard by edwards afb...also there are a couple by davis monthen afb
Thanks so much.....I have been looking for two weeks for these things....maybe I am just really retarted!!!
Isnt the internet wonderful.. Fuck lets build some shit to blow some shit up for real ..Yup it can be had.. Dave
Just so you know, practice bombs are made of thin sheet metal. you could cut the back part with the fins off, and attach them to a small oxy bottle to simulate a bomb. Bombs are formed on the same machinery used to make oxy bottles.
Not all bomb bodies are made like the aircraft oxyen tanks are. Yes, some of the shorter/smaller ones may be formed on a forming machine, but some of the larger ones have a rolled body with a welded seam down the length of the body. These things are made cheaply ( remember the government paid the lowest bidder to build them).!!!!! They weren't made to be air tanks. Who's going to pressure test this thing after you've had it welded up?? If you don't have them pressure tested beware that you may have just unwittingly created a " REAL " bomb that can kill you or somebody you dearly love. Good Luck, but proceed with due caution.
Those things are literally laying all over the place around my work. They even use them to line the road. I wouldn't use one for pressurized gas without a hydrotest or else you may end up killing someone. even 120 PSI is enough to rupture a tank in a way that throws shit at very high speeds.
Hey, enjenjo, see you're out of Swanton , Oh. My old stomping grounds. Was born/raised in Wauseon, just West of you a piece. I Spent from 1967-1998 with the 180th Fighter Wing Ohio Air Guard. Retired and moved to Kansas to play with the grandkids. Wife and I used to help run the Wauseon Tuesday cruise nights ( along with the help of many great folks from that area), from day one until we left town. Wife used to head up vehicle registration and I used to do all the DJ work and announcing for the event. Had lots of fun and man were those Super Cruise Nights awesome or what?? Hard to believe that on those nights we'd get 900-1100 cars on a main street in a small town in the middle of the North West corner of Ohio corn fields. Wife and I are hoping to get back there this Summer to see family and cruising buddies. Long live the Tuesday night cruises. CHEERS!!! ZIMM
Anything built by the lowest bidder scares the hell outta me. You could cut the end off and glue it with 3m panel bonding adhesive 08116 to your airtank. No welding. We use it to glue on roofs and quarter panels. Cool idea.
As a " safety suggestion" why don't you get the proper air tanks and locate them inside the dummy bombs. That way you'll have the look and not the hazzards associated with using the dummies for tanks. Could save you a lot of unnecessary work and grief. If done properly nobody would know the difference. CHEERS!!! ZIMM
I make one or two super cruises a year. Still take the same car, my Pro Street Marlin. I've had it 16 years now.
For a start they are not called 'de-militarized' they are called 'Inert Munitions' and are illegal to own. Second it depends on the type of ordinance it was, HE, WP, Illume, AP, Splintex, HERA etc.... All have different casing property's and none were ever made to be a pressure vessel. Get a real air tank, glue some fake fins onto it (They are not hard to copy, there just sheet metal) and paint it up. Save your own life, maybe someone else's and avoid copping terrorism charges for possessing bomb making paraphernalia.
Something like those practice bombs in an open or flatbed T-bucket would look interesting, and draw some very curious stares. Mount two of 'em, one for a fuel tank (about 11 gals or so) and the other for an airbag. Or, if you really got froggy, mount three - two for fuel and one for air. Hell, mount two of 'em on "pods" along the frame rails as air tanks in a fenderless roadster! I know, I know - safety first - but imagine seeing a car carrying bombs! The cops'd love you!
Hey JSBrigs, I see you are in my town. Never tried them up in Oroville, but I will check and see what they have. I was going to get one pressure tested and if it did not work, paint and stripe that thing and put it in my house on display. Just thought it would be a cool idea if it worked. I have seen one used in a truck one time as a gas tank in the bed. Someone probably has a picture of this. I was thinking about one on each side of my trunk all painted and striped. Imagine two bombs in my bomber!!!! I still like the idea, but we will see if it works out.
