I just got my Speedway order today. 4" drop axle and spindles. Spindle PN# 910-32100. They sell bearings and seals for another $30, but I don't want to fork over that much if I can get it cheaper at the local auto parts store. I plan to use the 73-77 midsize GM 11" disc brakes on this. The bearings will work, but the seals wont. What I need is the proper application or part # for the seals to make this work. Any help would be great. Thanks Joe
I'm running discs on my '54 chev spindles and I just ask the parts guys for rotors, bearings, and seals for a '77 Monte Carlo. I've never had a problem... that I know of!
I just did the MP disc swap on my '54 last spring. I made sure I wrote all of the bearing and seal part numbers down for future reference. Give me a few minutes and I should have the answer for you.
Ok, here's what I've got on mine. The kit uses '70-'77 Camaro/ Firebird, '73 Cutl***, Chevelle, GTO rotors. The inner bearing is # PT A-13. The outer bearing is # PT A-2. The seal # is PT 8871 (Chicago Rawhide #19753, Victor # 47477). This should be the same setup that you have.
Be careful, as Speedway would have changed the race on those rotors to a Set 13 (L68110) race from a A2 race as original. So if you replace the rotor, change the inner race.
did you start off with a Disc kit....or just a bracket and then add the rotors, bearings, and seals...?
That's what I'm finding out. The 8871 seal is sloppy as hell and won't work. I haven't bought anything, yet, but it looks like I'm gonna have to bite the big one and get the bearing and seal kit.
In the MP kit, no. You do have to "polish" the spindle with emery cloth, to get the spacer to fit on.
One other thing that I forgot to mention. With the MP kit, they have you knock out the inner bearing and race, and install the A-13 set with the new seal. There's a factory spacer on the spindle, but the kit comes with a different set. If you need any dimensions off of anything, let me know. I made patterns off of the entire kit, for future reference.
What is the diameter of the sealing surface on the spacer? I can use my seal book and find a replacement.
just go to someone who has a seal book ,take the spindle and rotor and have them measure them. thats what I did when I made my own open drive conversion. I don't know if your close to Omaha but Precision Bearing found mine.
The O.D. of the spindle spacer is 1.995". So, the seal I.D. is probably about .010-.020" less than that.
Ok, I would guess Speedway uses a generic GM rotor, most of which use the 19753 seal (very common size, though NAPA may have just superceded the number...). This seal has an outer diameter of 2.562 (same as the A3 bearing outer race diameter) GM just made an extra cut into the rotors of the smaller A6 bearing'd units to make it fit. It has an inner diameter of 2.00", so it should work fine.
Speedway lists 2 seals depending on which rotor is used. Their part unumber is 912-18562 or 912-518565. One is 1.875x2.5x.31 and the other is sized 1.875x2.562x.31. Good luck in finding this in your local parts house
So speedway wants $30 for bearings and seals. That's $15 per side. The average bearing is $8 or $9. Seals another $3. And you're gonna **** around with trying to reverse engineer the system, and risk the problems ***ociated with that, just to save a total of $3 per side? There's smart places to save money, and this ain't one IMO.
