So, I'm at home last night and my phone rings. A buddy calls me up happier than a fag w/ a bag of dicks, and asks me how confident I am with my pinstriping because he has a cool custom project for me. I tell him I'm pretty confident, and he said to check my email. Wants some crazy pinstriping on his new ride....I'm thinking early 50's GM/Ford, maybe a 60's sled....Nope. It's a %$#@in' '59 Studebaker Lark VIII. He called me back and asked what I though...I asked him what else he was gonna do to it to customize it, and he said...."Well, get you to pinstripe it, of course!"...Asked him about colors and he said he wants something that's gonna "POP" and be "AN ATTENTION GETTER" on top of, and I quote him,"Mercedes Silver" and gray, w/ "Gold" interior. Looks %$#@in' brown/tan to me!

So, now I'm totally confused, as this guy has been around custom cars and hot rods for a while, and then wants big panel work on THIS car.

And I ask you, fellow HAMBer's....What in the hell am I supposed to do with a '59 Lark VIII??

    Here's the pics he sent...

  2. That's a good looking Lark, for a 4dr.
Do you have a problem with Sutdebakers or something??

If you don't want to stripe it then don't, what are you looking for

Yeah, the car's straight and it looks good, and I don't have anything against Studebakers, I just don't really consider this car to be something that should get the full flowing panel treatment. Just looking for commentary.

To each their own. If it's what he wants, do it. It does appear to be a very fine example.

    "So, you like it?"

    "Dude, it's a Studebaker Lark."

    "Yeah but it's cool."

    "It's a LARK."

"But it's old and it's nice."

    "It's a FOUR DOOR LARK."

That's actually behind the car in the side shot. Threw me for a loop the first time I saw it too.

Yeah, he's getting charged for this, and I know..."Whatever the customer wants, yada, yada." Oh well.

In my opinion it doesnt need anything. Pinstriping just doesnt belong on everything.

    Love those Larks!

Had a tudor 1960 in high school with a nailhead Buick in it. Tuck&roll blue/white metalflake. Great date car. They had front seats that folded all the way down level to the back seat.

Presently have two sixties coupes and a fifty nine hardtop. The one coupe is going to be a sixties/seventies gasser when finished. Solid axle front end and piecrust slicks in cutout wheel wells out back.

Got a 496 BBC with a Weiand blower setup. 400 turbo and 9" Ford rear with large traction bars. Will look similar to the old Koffel "Flintstone Flyer" a south eastern Michigan favorite, back in the day

Had 8 Studeys, one '59 Lark (government car)
Hood and trunk work? around handles, antenna?
It's clean. It does have three pedals and gauges, can't be all bad.

  15. You cant polish a turd, but some people must like em....

  16. The one I saw was Black, no stripes. Looked like Elmer Fudd in a wheelchair, but one look under the hood and you knew it was all business. Interesting car...

It looks nice - I suggest red stripes paired with his choice of black or white stripes.
Ask him to replace that bent rear bumper, too.

My 63 2dr sedan is a plain janer- no power options, radio delete. I'm putting a 259 with a T10 and hopefully will upgrade to a Supercharged 289 (Stude, NOT Ford) when one becomes available. She'll be black, red bench seat interior, and will have two sets of wheels/tires: one with Doggie dish hubcaps, the other with Radirs.
    Dare to be different!
These things pull hard with the 289 SC. Here's one that runs 12.99 at the pure stock drags on bias ply's!:

That's more along the lines of what I was thinking as well. Something clean, classy, and simple. Thanks for the photo. Very helpful!

It also has overdrive and I bet it has a hill holder clutch too.

  25. WHAT?! WTF were you THINKING when you were trying to polish a turd?! That's REALLY weird dude! So, just 'cause you couldn't polish a turd, you don't like turds? Have you been trying to polish turds for a long time? Aw hell, never mind, that's TMI, :( Sheesh....

I dunno pal, I never thought that I'd EVER HEAR about somebody who EVEN TRIED to polish a turd! Whew, to each his own I guess, but some people must like 'em.....

    Proud to have served, LONGER.....
"WTF was that", (Doc's surprised exclamation when he hit an unpolishable object in the turd he was attempting to polish.....) :p :D

  27. Anybody know where I can buy a '59 - '61 Lark (single headlite), 2 door sedan, stick car prefered, project OK, no motor/tranny/interior OK. Has to have a solid body tub.

    Thanks a million in advance!
