While cruising thru a small Kansas town the other day I took these photos of a rare 3 door crew cab pickup. Built for the railroad and used by railroad crews until retirement. Elderly owner who has rebuffed my attempts to buy it for 10 years. Still hoping to get it someday if it survives. He leaves it sitting outside all the time. Ever seen one?

  3. Man, if Sanford had that, he'd have had to have another Son, ha. That's a neat little truck, I've never seen one like that.

Looks almost homebuilt, or custom built. The 61-63 style I'm pretty sure was the first Ford crew cab and I think they were even custom built for Ford by an outside outfit.

It could have been Sanford and Son and Son.

That is probably a military or forest service unit. They got all kinds of neat stuff under government contract.

It more than likely is rail road use. I remember reading about a 65 Chevy crew cab in a mag that was made for railcrew use.

Every since then, I've been keepin' an eye out for one.

That is cool. I didn't know they made anything like it in the 50's. I want one

  12. If you want unusual trucks, the railroads are the place to look. Their car shops routinely built custom, one-off trucks for specialized needs. I've seen several of the extended cabs on '50s/early '60s pickups, but never have been lucky enough to score one in decent shape. I have seen a cab built to carry four men across, in reasonable comfort....the ch***is had various equipment on it & I guess they did not want to lengthen it even more by extending the cab.

The electrical/utility companies built some pretty neat stuff too. :)

I had a 56 Ford 3 door railroad truck cab for a short time, rescued it from the crusher, but the savages ad already smashed the roof nearly beyond repair and the floors were gone from sitting on the ground for so long. But they do exist, and are factory built and rare as hell. I wish I had mine back!!!

The crew cabs were coach built by aftermarket companies. I worked for a big u***y company, we would get the cab and ch***is from the manufacturers, and send it out to be converted to crew cab. Then we would build the rest of the truck. Some of them has an auxillary trans just for the PTOs. Any how, Ford, International, and Dodge started building factory crew cabs in the 60's, GM didn't build them until 73.

Why only three doors, easy it was cheaper. We could get them built both ways.

I've seen one in a magazine, and one for sale somewhere, I can't remember, but I couldn't afford it at the time.

They look right, I like them.

I have never seen a 49-50 ford but there is a 56 chevy 3 door hear in Conroe. It was a forest service truck. Also at decatuer swapmeet last weekend there was a 4 door 56 chevy. Guy claims it was railroad. I had a chance about 15 years back to buy a 66 chevy 1/2 ton, short wheelbase, wide bed,283,glide with air, 4 door. It belonged to an old family friend that bought it new. He was crippled and it had hand controls. At the time I thought it was **** ugly. I'd love to have it now. He sold it at the Pate swapmeet for $2500 and was a nice truck.

Is that a 50 or 51? I like it, that 3rd door looks right on the cab, and that's not an easy thing to pull off..... So it sounds like the verdict is that a 3rd party company built it, not Ford???

It's a '52, and yes that is an early-style bed. I wonder why they put the 3rd door on the driver's side? They must have stretched the frame, too.

Boy, I hate to drag up such an old thread, but the '51 and '52 F2's and 3's have the raised-side beds. I may be wrong, but look at the distance at the rear, after the fender. That's a long bed, '51 or 2, IMO. They've just shortened it in the front, for the extended cab. So I think the bed is correct.

    Correct me if I'm wrong...
