Looking for a local So-Cal (long beach/OC area) shop, prefer a HAMBer but wont be picky. I have had this "valve chatter" sound occuring only when heavy acceleration on the pedal. With quite a bit of troubleshooting and fine tuning I still cant seem to fix the problem and I think its time for a pro to step in. Any recomendations on great hot rod friendly shops? Ideas on the chatter? thanks!
what motor is it? solid or hydraulic cam? how many miles on the motor? (hydraulic lifters will chatter if collapsed), did the motor sit for any significant amount of time? perhaps send a messange to member Groucho, he may be able to do it or give a recommendation.
Try Long Beach Auto Clinic at 3190 Long Beach Blvd. 562 426 7697 Talk to Larry, he's the owner. They've been in business for 30 years. They have always been fair with me and if they can't do it, they can recommend someone who can.
Its a 351 windsor with a Schneider Racing Cam with oversized SS valves ...not sure if its solid or hydro, sorry. The Engine was fully rebuilt about a year ago with only about 1k miles max on it. Never sat for more than a week or two.. I'll PM Groucho for sure.
Three things to check: Oil pressure, valve lash, and collapsed lifters. We also had a problem on a packard where the oil filter (being a can on top of the engine) lines were old and gummed up so it showed pressure, but it wasnt getting through the oil filter.... Hope that helps.
LBC'ers issue is definitly a timing issue... Deseils on hard acceleration. I've been trying to help him out, and can get it close but can't seem to get rid of it completely.... Any help would be appreciated, It's driving me nuts not being able to fix it..... I am no race motor builder, and neither is chip, and that is where we are having a hard time. The motor is very high performance. And built by an unknown individual. And What is exactly inside the motor is a mystery. Thanks.
A timing issue you say? That sounds like too much compression... What kind of fuel are you running in it?
It has run fine on 91 oct. before? if it has, than maybe the advance in your distibuter is bad, vacuum and/or mechanical. it is not advancing the timing enough and causing a ping... if it has never run properly on 91, try higher octane gas.
the "ping" has been going on since I have had the car, I have notice an increase after re-tarding the timing, def needs re adjusting. Higher octane might be the case...its going to be tough though..8 miles per gal is what Im on rite now $) I just hope its nothing catastrophic
Where is the car at? Gonna be at march meet this weekend but maybe next week i could come take a look at it?
The car is in Long Beach in my garage, that would be real cool gasser. PM me and we could work out details, thanks!
been fine "cruising" on 91, mash the pedal and there's going to be some ping for sure... try 100 octane, some Unocal 76 stations still sell it. specs on the engine from the mystery man: Keith Black Pistons TrickFlo Roller Rockers Schneider Racing Cam (Street Cam) Oversized SS Valves Edelbrock High-Flow Water Pump Mildon Oil Pan Port Matched and Polished Edelbrock Intake MSD Electonic Distibutor High Torque Starter 5 Row Radiator w/ Pusher Fan March Pulley Serpentine Kit Sanderson Block Headers Ain't no total gearhead but I know this one was prolly a little overdid. Not the best 'streetable' configuration, but awww hell...
Hey Bro Whats Up?? Just Wanted To Let You Know I Have A Motor Guy Working For Me Now So Let Me Know If You Wanna Come And Have Us Check It Out
also make sure the balancer is in the correct position. sbc's have had a problem with the outter ring on the balancer spin, moving the timing mark....not sure about fords. put motor on tdc and check the mark, also check the dizzy rotor. the 100 octane gas from 76 is at $8.999 a gallon down here, just was at the station getting gas.
Looks like I got a few great optopns to keep going on, I workend on the timing last night for some time the heavy ping is gone on acceleration, but it is still noticeable. I still think it needs some serious "fine tuning" As far as the cost of 100 oct. Its expensive but its def worth a shot. Unfortunitly the when the gas tank was re sprayed it was not properly sealed and the front joint leaks when the tank is filled above the halfway point, or a good takeoff. So I have been unable to fill the tank all the way. Maybe the 8.999 a gal is a blessing in disguise when the tank only holds 6 of the 12 gal .. haha
LBC or KLEW, what did the chambers measure out cc wise, what was the advertised compression of the piston, and what was the installed deck hiegth on final assembly? If the compression is over 10.5-1 you will probably never cure it on 91 octane. Does your distributer have vacuem advance? Is the port its hooked to only have vacuem off idle or when the butterflys are open? Some of the performance vacuem advances are adjustable through the vacuem port with a small allen wrench, have you checked that? I don't do this type of thing for a living anymore, but one of the guys I used to streetrace with has a shop in the South Bay. If your interested PM me and I'll get you his number. Not trying to steal anything from Groucho, just thought it might be a little closer for ya. Mike.
It does have a vac advance that is adjustible, Im just not sure of the appropriate adjustment. It seems as you have to adjust it, take it for a spin...re- adjsut it take it for another spin...etc. Im not sure if I am adjusting the correct way. PM sent for info on your buddy.
Start simple, go buy some of this http://www.lucasoil.com/products/display_products.sd?iid=26&catid=2&loc=show my daily will ping like it's got a line of goons tapdancing in the motor on hard acceleration. For 8 bucks i get about 5 tanks and no more pinging due to an aggresive set up. It's the socal gas, or lack there of any real octane to it. You would be better next to take it to a dyno then a regular shop- then you could see the advance vs. the air fuel and they can realy tune it correctly- or detune it so you can run it on the street. good luck, danny
