Cool pics! The purple one does it for me. I also like the one that 51mercCT posted.

Here's the front view of the 49.

Everybody and their uncle wants/has/has seen a chopped Merc coupe. It would be daring and different, and with some attention to details, it could look really fine. I'm thinkin suicide doors in the rear, reminiscent of the 61-66 Lincolns ... know what I'm saying? Have fun!

I'm really surprised so many of you guys, who live and breathe customizing and cutting up ANYTHING would balk at chopping this car. This is the first post I've seen where people are talking about keeping the ride original, as in restoration to OEM specs ... what's going on around here?!

Mercs have suicide rear doors from the factory. There is such a thing as a mild or full custom. There are many people including myself who think a 4 door makes a better mild or full custom than a radical custom. My 51 4 door wasnt chopped but the 49 coupe I have now is.There are many chopped 4 doors that I think were killer but they were not well known cars.

Drive it for a year the way it is.
If you still want to chop it after that, think about it for another year, collect three times the amount of money anyone tells you it will cost to chop it and sell it and buy a 2 door that's already chopped.

I would build it like a mix of traditional Bomb and very mild Custom.Keep the body all stock, just lower the car,add skirts, stock hubcaps, whitewalls and you're done...

And if you chop it,I agree on what's been said before, don't try to make it look like a Coupe.

It's your car, do whatever you want to it! But I have no doubts about it looking better after it gets chopped.

I drive a chopped 4 door Merc and I think all 4 doors should be chopped. The
top looks alot heavier then the coupes and it needs to loose the weight. I
understand your point about being rare and in great condition but the value of a 4 dr will not go down if you chop it. The chop has to be right and not
    butchered.

I've seen a 4dr Merc in Austin that was not chopped and it looked kool with Mild kustom touches and slammed to the ground. Checkout South Austin Speed Shop web site.

    Good luck

Okay, no ones asked, but are you going to chop it, and if so, what's your skill level? A four door is WAY harder to chop than a two door. On my old 54 plymouth I had to cut the rear window frames into 19 pieces to get the countours I wanted. If it's your first chop, NO! Also, be sure you want a four door. I love 4 doors, but if you really want a 2 door, you'll never love it. Decide what you really want, then follow through.
