I wan't to know what manual trans would work best to fit to a hemi. which hemi would work best with what manual trans? Is it possible to do this? do they make adapters? mabe I am un educated on this but I don't know of any manual trans hemi. I'v never seen one just direct drive with a clutch. I am putting a hemi in my 32 ford coupe and need your advice please.
I'm interested too, plan on putting a 354 in my '32. Someone must have mated a Caddy/LaSalle, but a Ford Top loader would be the way to go I think.
Search the site - you'll see there are quite a few long threads that go into the subject at a deep and detailed level. The threads I've been a part of are all geared toward the early Hemi . . . lots of good tech information, even has detailed information from Pat at Wilcap. Best of luck . . .
I've got a Cad/LaSale behind my 354, but I cheated and used an old hildabrant adapter. Wilcap was very helpful though, as was Bob over at Hot Heads. Though, if I were to do it again, I would see if Wilcap could set me up with an adapter for a T5 or a world cl*** from a Mustang. The Hemi engines will eat the early Ford trans for breakfast, so your into 60's and up.... Just my 2 cents.
Here is my 2C. Chrysler 833's are great behind early Chryslers. You need a small block Mopar bellhousing with a small center hole and an adapter from Gary Stouffer Engineering in Oregon. You can use a factory Hemi flywheel and clutch set-up. Or - I had my flange turned into a 6 bolt set-up to run regular SB Mopar stuff. You also need to put in a sealed pilot bearing for good luck. The overdrive 833's have aluminum gear cases and cast iron tailshafts. Hope I helped Tim
www.hothemiheads.com Adaptors for several Mopar and non-Mopar manuals. And if you didn't know already, the 392 and 426 are completely different motors and don't share many - if any parts. Some stuff crosses over for the 331/354/392 motors.
I plan to use an 833, but decided against the overdrive ones because they are more fragile than the hemi 833. Other than that, I plan to run the exact setup below, since I already have a hemi flywheel, and clutches are still made. I will probably need to redrill my crank (or at least turn a custom shaft bushing), since it originally had an automatic trans. Anyone have contact info on Gary Stouffer Engineering?
Check out the Car Craft on the stands now. There's an article in there about putting together a tough overdrive 833. I just picked it up tonight...haven't read it yet though.
I used a top loader behind my 392 with a modified SBC blowshield and small Chrysler/powerglide adapter. Email if you want info.
Adapters are available for just about anything, from an early Ford 3-speed (not recommended) to a modern T-56, as well as automatics. For a super traditional car, I'd go with a LaSalle 3-speed. If you want a four-speed, I'd go with a Ford toploader. Or if you want overdrive, you can go with one of the modern 5-speeds. For autos, take your pick.
A-833........period. And you don't need a Hemi one either.....23-spline input trans are PLENTY strong.
Tina and kid Jeff always told me you guys had some Hemis layin' around somewhere! Check out my sig. line Ken'. You'll see a link to the Hemi Tech Index. You have lots of options brotha'. Check out the section on transmission adapters and such. Pat from Wilcap is a RULER and will help you if you need it. He's helped me so much with my strange application. He has what ya' need. Cheers buddy! Scooter
Gary Stauffer used to present his hemi parts as Quality Engineered Components. Good guy to work with. He's located out of West Linn OR. Try directory ***istance. I've using his part of his torqueflite adapter with a small block mopar bellhousing and an A-833 behind my 354. I had Wilcap cut down a stock flywheel to fit a later 130 tooth ring gear which will mate with the later mini starters.
Let me elaborate a bit. I'm running a cast iron case A833 O/D behind a fifties Dodge bell. The bell uses a countershaft instead of a fork. The trans registered in the bell fine but I had to make an adapter for the trans bolt pattern. I'm using an old Weber aluminum steel faced flywheel , Borg and Beck clutch, and a stock starter.
