i found these cars and was told the elcamino custom was a barris build. any idea if that is true? the 50 chevy was found in an estate auction and was curious if anyone has seen it before or knows anything about it. thanks Brant
Barris builds ALWAYS have the Barris Crests on them somewhere! Anyone who removes them from a true Barris car has made a big mistake. Those cars are very well styled and look good, which often means they are NOT Barris cars depending on the era they were built.
By the way, I stopped your shop several months ago but not on a workday. You had some nice cars in there. Was that Model A Tudor being restored or the body just painted for a hotrod ch***is? How's business in the Army town these days?

That '57 El Camino is RAD. What is the deal with the exhaust pipes though? YUCK! Wish I could give you some more info on em, they're both neat.
now.. that elcamino conversion looks good.. and the 50 chevy is awesome.. Where were those pictures taken? That building in the background looks real familiar
Send those pictures to George...he'll confirm he built them...course, then again, any pic you send to George, of any car he'll confirm he built...!!! R-
Both look like '80's/'90's jobs. Never seen many sedan to Carson topped convertables made in the old days, but tons were done in the last 20-25 years. As far as Barris crests I have a friend who DEFINITELY has a car that used to have Barris crests (he didn't know it until I showed him old pictures of the car) and the holes were filled sometime in the early seventies when the car was repainted- and I have a pair of Barris crests like A LOT of people that bought the reproductions and just because I slap them on my '05 Dodge Ram doesn't make it a Barris custom- just like that El Camino. Try and think that most good looking customs were WELLLLL publicized when they were built- NONE were built in secret.
---------------------------------------------------------------you should sent the 140 dollars with the pictures TC
That El Camino lookin' thing came up a while ago, pre-primer. I showed pictures to Barris and he told me it definitely didn't come from his shop, end of story. Here's a link to the old thread: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=71558&highlight=scottrod
I think you can buy Barris Crests still..so,the likely hood that any car can be a "Barris"car is high.i have seen a **** load of cars for sale that were said to be "Barris built car" but that was not true.most of the cars had Barris crests and dash signed by him.in fact i have a friend who traded for as car that he thought was built by Barris(had the crests)and was not.00MACK confirmed that it was built by someone in Ohio and he also found a picture to confirm it. so beware buyer get info first..
I say. If you like the cars...buy them! Who cares if he built them or not. They don't look like any of his famous cars anyways. There were many cars that went through his shop, that just got minor mods done. That doesn't mean it's "Barris built".
Didn't Joe Bailon build an El Camino that kinda looked like this one but I can't find a pic to compare, anyone?
that El C is not a Barris job. It's also not a good conversion at all look at that hokey door line in the rear roof post and check out that wavy *** bodywork.
----------------------------------------------------------------BAILON'S is a 55 that says Bailon in the grille. TC
that's tha 1st time i seen a 50s grille in a 60s style'd ride. they just didn't do that back then ['specially a true barris job] from what i been gatherin all my life on kustoms...i have'ta say no on tha barris claim but ya never know! that grille could'a been added later who knows im just sayin...
The 50 Chevy was mine, it was started by another Gene Winfield employee named Pat, My buddy Big Ron got it from Him then I got it from Ron, Pat put ot on the late model Malibu ch***is, We did alot of work to that car, and it was My daily for atleast a year, I traded it to Bondo Al Grogins ( He used to work for Watson) and He changed the tail lights ( we had custom buble lens in Buick port holes that We made at Gene's), Al moved the port holes to the front fenders, also the top is a pair of Genes s****s that Pat stuck together, one time on the way to a car show Big Ron forgot to latch the p*** door and it blew open, I took it off and beat the dent out and filled the rest with bondo, that car drives like a champ I miss that one. That solves the question on the 50. The Elkie conversion looks familiar but like a lot of old customs they go through hands and changes. The side treatment is pretty distinctive though so that should be a clue.
Here are a couple pix of the 50 that I still had around here, one at Gene's with the top newly removed, one at Mike Shoundo's,a shot of the tail light that used to be in the rear and Rich from West Coast Kustoms standing by it at Our Rod****** show here at My place in 04.
