Do you drag race your pre-48 hot rod? (1/4 mile) How bout' posting some (honest) times? 16 seconds is ok if its honest, man up,at least your running it and having fun right? How bout' some pics of your car and drivetrain details.
The Rat Fink show at Palmdale last year. It made nine back to back runs, best was 13.35 at 98.5 mph. I seriously punished my whitewalls but had a great time driving it through in "D". We then prceeded to my buddy's motor home (he raced his street-blower model A coupe) where we ate pig meat and drank beer. An aluminum Vee-eight motor with auto trans and a nine inch rear.
I ran 14.2 at HAMB drags, best time so far was 13.9. I think my throttle linkage was out of adjustment. Anyway, its a 383 with a 700r4, 3000 stall, nova rear 3:73, parallel leaf rear. 3-2 barrels and a 268XE comp cam.
Guess you haven't been to the HAMB drags then, eh...???This old 1940 Studie Commander runs a 15.80 to 15.60 in a quarter...at right about 98 mph...400" SBC, Turbo 400 and the engine has 127,000 on it...driven to Joplin, MO and back home again... OH...that me racing against my brother's tan '47 Chevy Aerosedan...he runs a slower 16.90... R-
My 38 chev turned a 13.99 (finally broke 14) @ 99.2 at Firebird Raceway here in Phx. Around Christmas I got water in #6 I thought it was a head gasket, but cracked athe cylinder. I,m building a 388 stroker now and can't wait to punch the loud pedal at the track!!!
Awsome replies....great shots and info.I never made to the HAMB drags, its too far for me to get that time off from work right now.But Its a planned future road trip for sure. I never raced my rod at a track yet either, but that's gonna change this year.I want to go to the Nostalgia drags in the New York, Jersey M*** ,NH area this summer. One of them definetly I got a 32 Ford 2dr with a 392 hemi,65 Mopar 4spd,57 Ford 9'posi with 355's.I think I need a little more gear, but I plan on driving it to the track and back.
Depends, Kooldeuce...on if you want to race...or cruise...my old Studie runs a 3:35 1957 Chevy rear...plenty good for highway cruising...and the occasional race...driving more than 3:55's is gonna take a lot of gas and crank that Hemi over faster...stick with what you got... Are your drags run on an 1/8 mile...??? Joplin use a full quarter mile as do most tracks out west... R-
My 31 Pontiac w/354 hemi and 4 97's has run a best of 13.42 @ 101.53. Can't wait to see what she'll do with the 6-71.
Studedude,Thanks.I'll probably stay with the 355's.Last summer I ran a 300 posi chuck.Probably could of took the dual quad Hemi to 200mph if we had a straight enough highway with no traffic round here!Too scary to go past 125 in my straight axle, homebuilt (literally) bias plyed-rattle can.Ran 2000rpm's at around 80mph. I drive the snots out of it.Make it to alot of runs during the season, some of which (Jalopy showdown) are 5-6 hours one way.300's were nice for that but I'm ready to race it. Most tracks around here are 1/4 mile as far as I know. I wish CT dragway was still open
Thanks. An A833 O/D manual with a Weber steel faced aluminum flywheel and a Borg & Beck clutch. I adapted it to the hemi with a fifties Dodge hemi bell and an adapter plate at the transmission. It's a fairly wide ratio box with the gears 3.09 1.67 1.00 0.73. Nearly identical to a 700r4 though. I'm running some 3.89's in a Ford 9" out back. The tires are something like 29 - 29.5 in diameter.
Best of 11.20 @ 118+.... 406 SBC, 2 500cfm AFB, Summit cam, Stock rods, crank, cast pistons, B&M TH350, 4.11 Posi '57 chev rear, shift @ 6200 rpm. Mutt
12.85 at just under 105mph. with a little ol' 327, muncie, and 4.10 8" rear. Still a little more there with some suspension tuning. My 60ft. times stink worse than my shifts!
Go get your car out on the track! It's a blast. I was having almost as much fun running 15's as I am running 12's.
which summit cam if you don't mind sharing? That is haulin ice Mutt - Those slicks look like the trick. Good economical engine too. It helps is it strapped to a light car - but still, that is flying.
Hey cool Deuce.....my 1948 austin runs 10 flats at 132.00 ....does that count as a hot rod.....just kiddin....never ran the 37 yet with the blower motor....but it ran 12.22 at 109.00 with the stroker....its a real rubber wqagon now....so dont think it will run as good at the track....too much motor...not enough ch***is now.....but its still fun !!!!!!! so....hows my 348 doin ??? did you get the message that iI did not have that valley pan....left you 2 messages at home....
my model a's best time is 10.94 @ 124. big block chevy, 400 trans ,and 4:57 gears. it is just a street car.nothin fancy.
my 47 ford ran in the 15.70's....mild 350 350 turbo ....unknown rear gear...on radials and thru the exhaust.....was my daily driver at the time....my 28 sedan went 12.60's @ 110 mph.....in 2nd with a mild 350 /350 turbo.....and 2.76's.....on 235 radials.... had fun with both cars.....but have since moved on to a model a coupe..... brandon
My '48 F-1 went 14.01 @ 95 mph with a 2.0 60 foot time. Basically bone bone stock Vortec 350 (Removed fuel injection in favor of a 600 Holley and added shorty headers with dual exhaust), 700 R4, and 3.92 gears. Since I shelled my 3.92 gears, it will have 3.89 gears and hit a 13.999 this year with some simple tuning.
I will see ya' out there, then! cuz' I will be ruining my bias- ply's this Summer, in the same area! That thing oughtta do well, I would expect...I am looking for mid-twelves with the coupe...AND driveability! I race everything I build...I hope I see ya' out there!
HaHa!!! yeah, man...I just wish I had a decent rear under mine, then I might be tempted ta' throw me a set O' them slicks on, too...well, some things will hafta wait until next year, my narrow-*** bias-ply's should 'nt get any traction...and keep the rear together.... of course...it will sixty foot like a Mack truck, but...It should still dig pretty deep into the twelves...good enough for now, I s'pose! Love yer car, man...killer...
Anybody ever go to the old Nostalgia Nationals when they were at Fremont Ca? I went in 85 and had a blast
