Well, it never fails. Fix a few things and more pop up. I've been tinkering with the blower setup knocking out the bugs. Last night I replaced a leaking vac advance and routed it below the blower instead of above to stop some knock problems. Also fixed a flooding problem by finding and removing a small piece of teflon tape from the left float needle on the front carb. Made a couple of other changes so it would idle down better and not surge. When I went to start it the starter solenoid hung. To make a long story short it melted the negative post out of the lead battery side post. Heck of a safety feature. Now I need to buy a new battery and fix the starter. If it isn't one thing... On the upside, my first test drive with the blower the night before last was VERY promising!!!!
Thanks guys. I wasn't sure I was going to post this but misery really does love company. When I finally get her running right she'll scoot. This blower stuff is adictive!
Can't wait to see you run in August! Glad things worked out like they did, because the situation could have been a whole helluva lot worse!
Kerry is like the Professor on Gilligan's island......he will build a starter out of a coconut or something......
Damn dude. You scared me with the ***le.... I am getting to know my timing curve a little better also, going well so far. I wonder about the vac*** advance though..I asked the BDS guy about it and he pretty much called me a dumb*** for even asking about running a vac*** advance. So, who knows... Good luck and holler if you need to compare notes. -Abone.
Not trying to freak you guys out with the ***le but you read it didn't you? ;-) Just melted some lead. The battery still has the top posts so I figure I'll use it in the Red Fish Shark (50's boat project) when I get her going. On the street a vacuum advance makes so much sense. And hooked up under the blower any time the vacuum drops or you're making boost it won't be in the equation. Sure helped my idle with some more timing there. As it is I think I have to much mechanical but it a bit to early to tell. I think I'm going to walk away from her for the weekend and do some family stuff. I'll tell you I'm not nearly as frustrated now as I was last night. I was pretty disgusted.
Meltdown ***le on a hot rod board = pistons. Melting a battery post on a hot rod = At least you don't have to tear the engine down. Don't be scarin' us like that....
Dammit Kerry when I read the ***le I immediately thought you burned the engine down. Glad to hear it wasnt that serious. Keep plugging away and I'll see you in August if not before.
Took the family camping this weekend and just got back. Cleared my head a bit. Picked up a new battery on the way back. I'm going to have a go at the starter in a moment. I REALLY appreaciate the well wishes!!!
Yep, it's a flaky solenoid. Once energized the only way to release it is to remove all power to it. I've never seen that behavior before. Got a line on several new ones. Another part I'm going to be carrying as a spare.
Boy Kerry, you really need to market a booklet en***led "HAMB posting: Getting your thread noticed" i had mental images of a large puddle of aluminum where your huffer used to be and charred frame rails glad to hear it wasnt real serious and that it'll be even less of a loss cause you can use the battery in your boat! now i need to go and lay down for a bit.
Man, it's great to have an awesome parts store nearby. Rose Motors in Hutchinson Kansas rules!!! Picked up a remanufactured 1956 starter solenoid over lunch!!! Problem is we're going over to my Mom in laws tonight to help with some stuff. Can having parts to put on make you sick? ;-)
Be very carful when you get it back running...........too much advance can melt the pistons due to detonation.
Yep. Right now I'm chasing vacuum leaks. Lean conditions can cause some pretty wicked damage as well. I've got a pretty good idea that my intake is leaking from the bottom side of the gasket. That means it'll all come apart... again. No sweat though. Getting pretty good at it.
