  1. Revhead, here was my cry out for help for the old hamb...mocking the types of posts i have seen on here from the new idiots you speak of....

  2. FARMER that's fuckin' classic... too bad it was before YouTube or we could see the series of tire smoking shitties that started the whole wreck...in 4 or 5 different threads form different angles with soundtrack from Reverend Horton Heat... :D

I posted a tech question about a month ago and was fully expecting a bunch of smart ass answers. Sure enough, the first post was some smart ass comment. It really annoyed me, but what really ticked me off was next few replies stating how funny the first guy was. I highly suggest that everyone make a major attempt to just ignore such input.

I have honestly noticed a big difference even in the short time I've been here. There is amazing content stored in the message board but too many people would rather jawbone about piddly shit than search, read and learn. The number of OT threads lately is really tiring, and it's true the speed with which some tech posts get buried by BS is amazing. You actually have to subscribe to a thread lots of times so that you can check back in just a couple of hours to find it.

When I joined up, I felt like I had to be really careful or my ass would get booted. The moderators and long-term HAMBers were pitbulls. Is the way things are now a result of ballooning notoriety, the HAMB as business and therefore needing to let customers "have it your way", or a combination of both or neither?

I'd like to see a return to the "this is the way it is, if you don't like it get the fuck out" attitude I found here. It fostered respect and minimized the crap.

These would be some of my "new rules":
    - NO O.T. threads without clearance from a moderator, no matter how long you have to wait
    - NO new threads about anything that has been covered by pre-existing threads easily found with the search function, else your thread is closed with a reply telling you why
    - Classified threads closed to replies by anyone other than the poster and moderators
    - Return to intro requirement for classifieds and any classifieds which don't follow the rules 100% are immediately nuked
    - NO mercy
    - Clearly posted rules and commitment by members to enforce the rules and help out the moderators with same

  5. I like the way you think, man.

That first one is already covered, really... isn't it? The Mods delete what they want...
So for them to have to take extra steps to give an OK first might just make it tougher on 'em.

The pit-bull and no mercy part I can say I miss the most.

If we're switching gears to suggestions, now......???

I'd like to see a "sticky" thread for YouTube videos.... and then, if you post one on the message board you should get a kick in the nuts. That way, anyone who comes to the H.A.M.B. just to watch fucking TV can tune in at their leisure.

    As far as searches go....????
If people would be smarter than the boogers under their chairs, they would write a title that would allow you to find it...
    ....and a sticky that says....
PUT SOMETHING ABOUT THE CONTENTS OF THE THREAD IN THE FUCKING TITLE YOU DICKHEAD....!!!!!!

    :D

I still love you guys... ;)

i've only been here for a few months, but in that time i've knoticed a change in the HAMB. when i first joined almost everything on the first 2 pages of the board were worth reading, and i would spend hours reading them. now i find about 3 or 4 good topics on the first 2 pages and the rest is just crap that isn't even worth looking at. another thing that bugs me is when someone asks a question, then after 4 or 5 smart-ass comments, someone finally answers it and then 10 more people say the exact same answer. If someone answers a question we don't need 10 people confirming it. we definately need to make some changes around here.

I agree on all of the off topic stuff.
I retired from road racing in 2004 and renewed my intrest in hotrods.
being away from them for nearly 40 years I have found this board a big help. But often I have asked questions in the morning and by noon the question is on page 15 with no replies. And there are 40 post on Dogs, Cardboard ect.

I am still happy here and recently joined the Alliance to help support the board. Hopefully next week I will put together a tech peice, that does not show up on the search engine, and start repaying the people that have been helping me with my dumb questions.

And with more dumb questions and lot of work I will have an 54f100 custom to put under the HAMB tag for the HAMB drags this August.

    My 2 centavos....

I hate YouTube. I don't even open the thread if it has YOUTUBE inthe title. If a YOUTUBE link supports your topic (like show old drag footage when discussing old drags) then OK. But a YouTube video alone should never be a thread starter

There are OT post and then there are OT post. I like some of the OT threads that have to do with cars. I hate the OT granma dolie threads. But like someone said... it's supposed to be like a garage and guys in a garage talk about a lot of different stuff. Hopefully it can be limited to non gay stuff that wouldn't get you punched in the eye if youe were in a real garage.

  9. I've only been here for a couple years, so veterans correct me if I'm wrong...it seems like the quality of posts go in waves. There are times when it seems like there are a ton of BS threads (which I suppose is still based on opinion) and just when I'm feeling like the HAMB's taken a turn for the worse, some great tech, builds, or history threads arrive to bring us back to what we really enjoy. I've had days when I said to myself, "Damn self, the HAMB kicks ass right now!!" When I'm not feeling it, I just take it as a sign that I need to get back in the garage.

I like the pit-bull and no-mercy approach too...eventually the guys posting too much OT garbage fade away or get so pissy that they retort with something that gets 'em booted.

If we ever get to the point that the really knowledgeable guys stop posting, then we'll have a problem. So far, I think they're still out there and there have been some recent additions too...we know who they are.

My tuppence worth: I joined/use the HAMB for its tech content, and have learned a lot and hopefully contributed a little since signing up. I know I don't see every topic (so I must miss some good ones) and really only scan the first couple of pages for titles that look to be of interest, but the occasional O/T thread has been more than entertaining - the one where Ryan (I think) had his cardboard templates nicked by some wino was a killer.

And as for videos, why not have a "Tuesday YouTube Show" or something, like with the Friday art show, then anyone can watch 'em or ignore 'em at will?

I agree that the HAMB is like a big garage where you hang out with your friends, but in my garage (shop) I hang out with fellow "gearheads" to talk hotrods, bikes, custom cars, engines or some times about a good carshow I went to. If I want to talk about other stuff I'll go to the local bar.

Why wait 'till TECH week to post tech.....

Another note.....pretty much everything has been done before and can be found using the search....if not here, somewhere else on the net or in books.
If we cease to B.S. with O/T posts or ask questions that have already been answered before.....a message board/forum will slowly die.......
I too agree that there has been an ONSLAUGHT of USELESS posts, but you just gotta use your own disgression when opening a thread.....

The HAMB is for "Spreading the Gospel" of "Traditional Rods and Customs" to "Hoodlums Worldwide"......the Gospel seems to be getting LOST for us Hoodlums trying to build OUR VISION of a Traditional car.......

Exactly. I understand posting if you have something more to say but the "what he said" replys are a waste of time and space on the board. It also annoys me when a thread is going and two people decide to use it as a time to catch up. Next thing you know half a page is used up by two guys chit chatting. This is the kind of stuff PM's are for. Everyone on the board doesn't need to read it.

  15. Ryan mentioned in his thread about all the O/T crap lately that he wasn't ready for a tech week yet due to server or software issues, so I'll wait till he gives us the green light.

Well, that's kinda my point....WHY WAIT for permission from Ryan to post tech. There is just not enough tech posts done, and when people have stuff to show, they SAVE it for Tech Week?????
I'd post more tech stuff if I knew how to do anything...hahaha!

Maybe I'm just CONFUSED as to what the Hamb is all ABOUT.......

  18. 'Cuz that's how my momma raised me. :p

Actually, it's not quite ready yet. I need to proofread the text for clarity and I'm feeling a bit lazy right now too. Besides, it's just sewing stuff, nobody's interested in that, right?

It's funny... I was just speaking with one of our oldest members last night and we were both contemplating how great the content has been lately...

I'm a little confused as to how you guys could be seeing all of these off topic posts. I delete just about everything I find that is not interesting... Maybe you guys should start reporting posts more often?

  20. I lurked for a long time before registering also. Couldn't resist due to the hands on techiness of it all. But now, I totally agree with the reason this thread started. Democracy is great and all that, but beware the thin end of the wedge syndrome.

I've been wondering if it would be possible to have a "Tech Archives" - exclusively tech - searchable, well organized, etc.?
Having to mull through dozens of O/T posts to find a spec of pertinent information is a PITA.

I'm still a newbie - but it seems that even I have seen a change in the HAMB the short time I have been on board. I'd hate to think that I was adding to the problem and will go out of my way to watch what I post in the off chance I'm propogating the very thing we're all railing against.

Hey, it's like TV. If the name of the program looks stupid to me, I don't bother with it. I'll agree that it seems like nothing will interest me one day, and the next day I'll see thirty different threads that I want to check out, but they can't all be gems. Like someone already said, it's all been done at one time or another. Sort of like articles in rod magazines; it gets increasingly difficult to find fresh material.

When I started on the HAMB I was looking for info on my 54 chevy, I read almost every thing that came up on a daily basis but I was really only focused on one type of car and a few of the guys who had the answers I needed ( rusk, 53sled, ect ). Now since Im not driving that 54 any more and Im concentrating on my new car a 64 Galaxie, it seems the hamb has opened up a million posts about Fords, FE motors , 60s bellflower stuff, and I use the search all time, really renewed my intrest in the hamb cause I have a new reason to be here. I guess what Im trying to say is to think if you've been stuck in a "rut" with what your looking for here. I know getting a different car made me interested in a whole section of the hamb I previously gave little attention too. Overall though, Im really happy to be here and Id help anyway I can.

well being one of the new, very new guys I may add, i dont know anything about the early days of the hamb, however i have been a part of a few other awesome message boards that also became gigantic.

Neways, my personal opinion, is that this board is suffering a little because there are simply not enough categories, there should be categories for tech help, random tech articles that eventually filter to the tech archives, and other misc. things. Things simply get lost, WAY too quickly being compiled into one category, I mean its pretty bad when its only 10-30 minutes after viewing a post and its on the 3rd or 4th page. No offence to ryan or the moderators or anything, there simply needs to be more diversity in the categories, so its easier to get the answers you need, and so you dont need to wade through waist high bullshit for hours.

  27. Here are a couple of observations I have made.....

1- A lot of the older members are merely lurking [:D regularly].. but nonetheless ,not posting much....for whatever reasons.

2-I[and others] used to try to post some tech,[I thought it was Tech] but, lately have not because it seems it falls on deaf ears,or some dude with zippo experience corrects me,telling me a better way to do it....and makes me wish I had not even done the post.

Also I wonder why some, like me who posted several Tech posts have hardly anything in the Tech archive, while some rediculously mindless stuff is in there.....who is in charge of that?

3-A lot more guys here are interested in things we never ...EVER... discussed here, before... :D ;)

4-The HAMB is what we each make it......thankfully we have it as a venue we can improve on....

    Thanks for the outlet Ryan.

I sure dont mind being helpful but if the opportunity presents itself I wont hesitate to lower the bar (or the boom) with a good old fashioned Liberace post. BTW Chachi has been woefully underused lately........................in the spirit of all things comedic and in my best Michael Buffer voice I present to you the all singing, all dancing, superfly sensation of 1977.........he's number fourteen in your programs but number one in your hearts...........Chachi Arrrrcoooollllllllaaaaaaaa (and Joanie).

The argument that "I won't post my tech stuff because some new guy will just correct me anyway" is a bunk excuse...
