There were lots of show winners.some beauties and then there wwas THIS one. Almost everybody's first reactions is "What the Hell was he thinking?" But if it doesn't make you smile ear-to-ear, you need a humor transplant.. This was a Brand New Jag, picked up at the docks and Full (OVER!!!) customized for a wealthy New York beer baron. Dad always had a thing for those "egg crate" grilles. Wouldn't you love to take it to Goodwood and dodge the gunfire from the "purists?"
Did he make his eggcrates, or were they modified from another car? If they were made, how? BTW, I really dig the metalwork on your site. Amazing stuff. I've always had a desire to be a metalsmith, but just not the ambition to pursue it. Cars in bare metal, and no visible seams... incredible workmanship... Pure artwork.

(I'm assuming 1/16"..)notches cut halfway with a bandsaw and width was perfect to insert/interlock the strips..then brazed,while spacers held strips in place. then chromed. These photos are original-notice those curvy photo edges that they had in the fifties- and I still have almost all original negatives. too. You'll notice a bunch of variations in photos of the Ford Spl on my other post. (before & after fron bumpers were added & other stuff)Just different stages of additions. Cars were always being updated or new ideas added..Most of the paint-re-paint was done right on the street in those days..or in the shop on the RARE occassions when you coould get anything more to fit in. Shop held room for upper workshop and machines & office. garage door on right side led to long paved ramp down to a lower level. So it held about 7-8 cars (in progress) at a time. Others were left on street. Times have changed! He told me of time all the neighborhood kids were playing in the Deusenberg touring car outside the shop. He had bought it to take the big Deusie straight 8 out of and put into an Auburn Speedster-which the chassis had to be stretched a foot (and hoods) to accomodate. Driver was a little guy who could hardly see over the hood! There should be a photo or two of it on the website..

I usta have an MGA that I contemplated putting '59 Caddy fins on. Even measured them up to see if they would fit gegraphically(?) That was back in the 60's when Sandoz, Purple Haze, and Owsley were cmmon names. No I never did it to it, I wasn't THAT crazed!

Jag ,its hidden pretty well.Slightly on/off topic. Back in 1971 I was living in Lewiston,Idaho renting a house. The former renter had left a car there. Its was a Jag XK140. Now the weird part. It had a Nailhead Buick V-8 engine sitting in it ,no tranny but Jag rearend. No rust ,body and interior dirty . He finally came and got it after about 2 months. I could of bought it for $500. Had no idea at the time who I was ,let alone what it was. Another odd one got away.
That grille's kinda neat....coulda did without the fins (this coming from a guy that owns a '59 Cadillac), but the grille is pretty cool....guy musta drank too much of his own beer before shelling out the dough to pay for that job.... ....Welcome to the board!
