[ QUOTE ] I have met my closest friends by participating in our car club. These were guys who were friends of friends that joined up. Needless to say the original friends are long gone but the others are still here. I have givin them keys to my garage, let them take my car out on dates if theres was down, opened up my house and fridge. But when I was broke down 220 miles frome home it took one phone call and I knew there would be help there. 4 hours later there were 3 guys a full toolbox, every part possible to replace on the side of the road and a trailer. All this on a sunday night at midnight when everyone had to work the next morning. I call it true friends who wear the same logo on thier jackets. [/ QUOTE ] wow!!!!!
The best Working car club I've seen has been the "Kontinentals" down in Austin! Not pretenscious, just a bunch of ambitious guys that truely are out to enjoy themselves and invite others along for the ride!!
It's for sure that a club if run right is a lot of fun and if it's not it is for sure a REAL BIG pain in the ***. I'm a founding member of a car club here in Rochester which has been in existence for more than 30 years. We have seen every iteration of ******** you could imagine and some forms of it just keep coming back to haunt us like some form of zombie. Our biggest h***les were over the car show we used to promote. Back in the seventies we put on a show that drew nearly 700 cars. That was a pretty big deal back then. However, as soon as one show was over we would be planning for the next show. What a pain in the ***. And the arguments over the money generated caused more acid than anything I could ever remember. After years of grousing, grumbling, *****ing and pointing out to the rest of the club members what an un-fun thing the show was, it was finally abandoned. From that time on, we have evolved into what I thought was a perfect club. Basically, no rules other than what common sense told you was right. Our dues were very modest and no one had to do anything unless they wanted to! There are always a few volunteers interested in doing things, so we were having a great time with things pretty much running themselves. Until the last year or so, when someone decided we needed to drag out our "Club Bylaws". We had not really operated under those things for over 20 years as they were so stultifying. But, someone put a bee in someone else's bonnet and now there is a committee to formulate a set of "Guidelines" for new members to see. Why? I have no idea as our club has over 125 members and generally maintains a number of over 100. We must have been doing something right but, I don't know, some people just can't stand to leave well enough alone. Common sense just isn't enough for some and rules and regs are what they need. Must be the Democrat in them! Anyway, sorry for the tirade. If you are going to start a club, be sure that you use common sense to guide you and don't let money or shows run the club or you-ever!
Jester my man, this is gonna sound kinda vague, but it really depends on what you want and expect from a club! Every club is different,I personally belong to 4 clubs. One is one of the oldest continuously running car clubs in N,America it owns a drag strip and is the most political thing since politics! Enuf to drive ya nutz! 2 of the others i founded, one is 20 years old this year and has never given me an once of grief(touchin wood) The other is 10 this year and holds people i will be friends with for the rest of my life,(and has only been a little bit of a pain in the ars.) The last is full of guy's that all think they can do better than the next guy,but never do ****!(a lot of back stabbin) I've been around car clubs for 30 years and have found that their like relationships!! Each one' requires a differnent level of Obligation and Dedication Also watch for the guy's who can't distinguish between good leadership and vision's of grandeur ,that helps!! Sorry for babblin, first post in a while!
What I remember about clubs being fun was when I first started driving, there were two local clubs here abouts. Both were started by guys just hanging out, working on each other's cars and having a good time. There may be some like that today, but around here, most guys wont even think about letting you touch their cars, much less working on them. I long for the good of the old days and the best of today. I dream of winning the lottery, too! Jim
Being a master judge of all humanity I can say this: The people who have problems getting along within the confines of a "club" would have problems getting along whether they belong to a club or not, and the people who get along great do so whether they are in a club or not. If you try to get people together just to be getting people together, there's bound to be at least one *** bag. Whereas if you are already "together" then you already have a club. It just depends on how official you want it to be. Some people feel the need to move things to the next level - make things official - because they have a need to feel the sense of belonging to something. Others don't like commitment. Ya can't force it, it just happens or it don't. Just like when you are hard up so you keep banging the crazy chick who keeps asking you if she can move in with you.
[ QUOTE ] Kill friendships??? Hell no!!! It wasn't until I joined a car club that I had my first gay experience. [/ QUOTE ] Look! In the back of Nadeem's garage... what is that? It looks like two bears fighting over a dead trout! NADS, I can just hear the Richard Marx tunes streaming from your garage... God! I'm dyin' ova hea... Thanks for the visual... Ha ha ha Man, when you come out, you do it in a big way. JOE
I am a member of the oldest rod and custom car club in the state,,,,,,since 1972,,,,,,,,thats quite a while,,,a lot longer than most marrages! I have also met my best friends in the club,,,,yeah,we argue,***** and moan but,If your married ,It's the same way ! If you wanna be in a club,,,thats cool,,,if not thats cool too! Our club is just like all the rest,,,,,,5 or 6 guys do all the work at shows or cruz-ins,,,,,,but put on a BBQ and everybody and there next door neighbor shows up! Kill friendships,,,I don't think it has with me,,,on the other hand a couple of past members don't speak anymore,,, Over half of our members have been in the club at least 15 years,,,there are still 2 active original members. Our youngest member is my son-in-law Cory(25) and oldest 2 members are both 77 and still building hot rods! Friendships are give and take,,,,,,,,,,,,and sometimes we take more than we give! HRP
personally,i dont think clubs have anything to do with killing friendships.i'm in a club and sure,we've had a few bad experiences and stuff, but basically it comes down to the one thing we're there for.the CARS.we LOVE gettin greasy and dirty and just sittin around, havin a beer and talkin cars.there needs to be some maturity involved if even a friendship is going to be achieved.like they say, egos kill friendships, not clubs.if someone thinks they're a diva and what not, yeah, there's gonna be trouble.even without a club,it just might take logner to show.and jimmy******,i think your problem is that you ran into your DAD'S club (obviously not what i'd like to do) and were surprised by big egos..my dad and his buddies think i'm a young pup who doesnt know anything..mostly they're rite, but you gotta remember, that's where it happens in the first place.a lot of older guys get old and forget what it's like to be young and ****y.a buddy of mine's dad built custom cars for a living for awhile and even does safety inspections for the NHRA,but does his son think he's cool?no,he's just his dad that does things to make him mad, just like every other kid.so,like i said, maturity.if you cant run with it,grow up or stay outta the clubs! ~Creepy
[ QUOTE ] Groucho was right. [/ QUOTE ] LOL "I don't want to belong to any club that would have me as a member." Groucho Marks
my opinion,,,i think clubs are kinda gay...not trying to come off as "better than thou" ....but ,i like thinking my own thoughts, weither they may be wrong or right,i like going to car shows, swap meets and other things either by myself or with a kool friend....,ive hung with 'groups' & street GANGS and they always have had their drawbacks and limitations...thankfully, ive even tried to start a car club a few years back,,but thankfully before anything really happened i realized that wasnt the best thing to do... if you have some great close freinds that you'd hang out with no matter if there was a club or not ,then id go for it!,,,but i wouldnt go "recruiting" just so you can start a club..
from now on i will not use the term "car club" i will now refer to it as an "AUTOMOBILE POSSE". we have a small auto posse, a few guys are kinda dip****s, but some others have really stepped up to the plate. to me it's a bunch of guys with a common love of old cars, that just so happen to get along decently without gouging anyones eyes out. it's an excuse to hang out with people who you'd probably be hanging out with anyways, and do something different. we're pretty informal, no dues, no heirarchal pecking order. if we go somewhere as a posse and 2 of us show up it's still better than going by yourself...yet not as cool as the whole group. if it's already stressful and a cause for headaches, then it's prolly not the best of ideas.... just have fun. life's too short.
I am sure that many car clubs are cool. But, I can only state the following based on what I see in my general vicinity. CC's are great but they do a TON of work which is not directly related to cars. Not to take away from them because theya re giving back to the community...at least the CC's I know of. But it seems to me that the CC's of now aren't as "cool" as the CC's gone bye. If I was to be in a car club it would need to be about cars. Going to Joe's this eve, going to Bill's this eve, Going to Take a Dump now , I am totally happy with the "car" friends that I ahve and the last thing I would want is to have certain days and times and monies and cruises and shows and **** hemorages...I say stick with your buds and **** the "offical" car club insignia. Just have a good time working on each others rides. Everyone has some type of talent they can lend. You don't need a ***le imo.
Car Clubs are trouble. You guys just need a HOTROD GANG..... My fellas have all been friends for quite a while before we even started calling our selves anything...So when someone wants to bring a new guy in, everyone has to get to know him and feel comfortable with him and all that.... It keeps us close. It is a pain in the *** sometimes getting everyone to agree on stuff, but it all works out... CHRG.....COFFINS WHAT!
I was in a club. It ****ed, but that was that club. If everone gets along and then everything is kool. But like tha one I was in my **** was'nt as nice as most others so I got looked down apoun and at the NSRA Nats in Pueblo back in about 96' I got left behind by some club members when I ran out of gas. They drove by pointing.......I quit the club that following monday and said **** it. Another problem with clubs and we are going through this at this very minute is this. At one time here in Central Arkansas a bunch of individuals started hanging out at Soniuc with their old cars. THen it grew into a whole **** load of people through word of mouth. Then someone here got the bright idea to round a few of these Sonic going people and start a club. They then started hosting the cruise nights at the Sonics. Well then the managers at the Sonics were *****ing saying they lost around 800.00 every night that we were there for the four or so hours we hung out. Now We all know this is BS because we had cars parked in places that NEVER get parked in. So thanks to the "car club" everyone got told to leave and never come back. They were able to do this because they had a "body" to kick out. When it was just a bunch of INDIVIDUALS we never got ****ed with. This went on for about 15 years until this "car club" got their bright idea. There are also too many rules and BS that go along with a club. I found out through the one and only club I was in that when a club host's a show, or cruise night or what ever, if someone gets hurt....they can go after the car club, not the establishment it happended at. So I say to hell with a club, UNLESS, everyone agrees on everything. And that can be tough.
You are LIKE the CUB SCOUTS, probably NERDS, who were MOLESTED. and your HIGH SCHOOL band JACKET aint getting no "A" LIST broads with PERFECT ***TIES.......... when your UNIFORMED and you follow GUIDLINES, some PRESIDENT "***BREATH" makes,, you are NOT BUILDING INDIVIDUALITY ............. your WALKING in his ***MED STAINED TUBE SOCKS............... WALKING as a RULER, does not come FROM wearing MATCHING T- SHIRTS, speaking in CAR CLUB SCRIPT with the SAFETY of your FRIENDS,,,, ***** SIZE isn't about CASTING ALUMINUM junk to HANG from your BUMPER......... ***** SIZE is about DOCKING the BOAT in some DAMES BEEFCURTAIN COVE, by the RAILROAD TRACKS in PASO, while the CLUBBY BAND JACKETBUDDY HOLLYS search for MAG coverage..........while LISTENING to SOME 50's **** that they dont really LIKE,,,,, CLUBS???? ITS ALL ABOUT WHO SINKS the HOTTEST *****,,,,, and WHO FINDS the BEST TIN........ you are what you OWN, in HOT ROD WORLD...... POLITICS=MATCHING SHIRTS. CHROME DOO DADS, CROWD PLEASERS. AND BOWLING SHOES..... HOMO***UALITY=ANDYGIB+ RULES+OPINIONS..should be considered the MICHAEL JACKSON version of CLIMGING the TREE and BEING free with the RETARDED boy who HAS CANCER............... TRUE HEROES never FOLLOW..... I think A CLUB should NEVER LET OUTSIDERS IN, and I think you SHOULD have to PROVE your PURE HEART instead of your MANHOOD,, LOYALTY IS PARAMOUNT, fellas.... FRIENDSHIP is the ART of REAL EMOTION expressed towards your FELLOW man,, ITS A HIGHBOND........... BOURNE TO LOSE(tm) BLOOD 4 BLOOD,, TRUST or BULLETS... CLUBS are GAY when they ARE SOCIAL.
Yeah, what germ. You did say clubs ****, right? The few clubs I have been in (years ago) were filled with people who never got elected to student council in high school, but really wanted to...you know, the wannabe dictators who want a small country to run...no clubs for me, I do just fine on my own, thank you. Brian
I dont follow orders from some ***GOT trying to make a SEWING CIRCLE out of the MACHINES I build,,,, if I want to cut the SLEEVES of MY JACKET, LIKE SQUIGGY, then We aint VOTING on it,,, I'm doing it, and thats that,,, OH YEAH the best is when you QUIT, you have to GIVE back your TRINKETS?? Yeah sure FAT BOY, come over to my house and TAKE the STUFF I bought.... I don't take FORCE FED **** in my FACE, If your IN my GANG, Your IN cause we are BROTHERS... CAR CLUBS are FOR PEOPLE who listened to GOTH music and wore LIPSTICK in HIGH SCHOOL,,, they were TEASED alot, and NEVER felt IMPORTANT,,, It builds their SELF ESTEEM to "FUNCTION" as a GROUP. and it leaves them PATHETIC EXCUSES that are formulated during IDLE time..... I imagine it's because they are NOT thinking OUTSIDE the ****ing "BUBBLE".... My women isn't going to work on a CAR.... and I will save myself the PETTYNESS of ATTENDING a MEETING to DISCUSS PROBLEMS,, OUTLAWS MAN, Mister RODGERS, and CAR CLUBS, RUINED the REBELLION with RULES, and SOCIAL SETTINGS,,,,, GATHERINGS???? Come to my SHOP and SMOKE WEED and BENCH RACE,... send the JACKET to the DRY CLEANERS, WERE ROCKING the FLANNEL
Hey Germ, those people you said that are in car clubs because they were the nerds, band ***s and ones that never got picked for anything, I think you also described alot of cops.

Cops* were the block bully... *(Disclaimer; Not all of either group, some cops and even some politicians think they are actually doing some good for someone besides themselves.)
Car Club......Car Gang......Car posse.......I have been hanging out with the same couple of guys for years. If we had a structured club it wouldn't matter if I was a member or not cause I'm always going to be ***ociated with these guys and to that point I don't need to fly the colors. To the point made about staying to one kind or era of car, this is a point we have all been making to each other and it will be the point in which the club will break. The friendships will still be there just not in a club form (I ain't crying about it either). Driving my ride and having a couple of true friends is what I'm about not having a jacket with some catchy club name on it cause like I said those of us that run together will be ***ociated with each other anyway. In a small town in a small state its not hard to tell the custom antique guys from the ****ed up rice burning mini truckers. Thanks for all the input and a special thanks to GERM as usual for his scary intellect that is for some reason really Zen like
I feel that clubs in genral bike, car what have you club`s really depends on the bylaws its like anything else if you have a entrenched buracracy you have what Germ describes for a club to work for you .You gotta respect what that certain club is about. I prospected for a bike club once first i was a hang around then i got a prospect patch for me the club was full of **** what they claimed to be about and what they were was two differant things I did all my requirements to get my patch and was voted in as a full member at that time I declined and told them why I am still freinds with them all because I have integraty if you have that you can join,be, do anything you wish with your head high if you dont have integraty you wish you did and ***** about those that do
i was in a club... the club would like to sit around our hometown wearin' matching jackets and little hats like a ****ing dog and pony show... we LIVE in our town... my idea was let's go out and make trouble... let's finish our cars... let's have cars. that was 'MY BAD'... EXPECTATIONS... the club no longer exists as it was... some of the fellas' split off into another club, the president is still driving his '23 T-BUCKET REPLICAR from total performance with sbc crate motor and all brand new shiny stuff that took him 7 years to build... i think it's due for a SMOG CHECK this year... anywho, as bitter as i may sound i'm not, really... REALLY? that kinda' describes my experience. on my own now i do more, see more, met more folks, and have learned more outside the BUBBLE of BIG CUFF WEARIN', BIG HAIR SLICKIN', SWEATIN' TO THE OLDIES(because they're so fat from sittin' around talking about cars with tall boys lined up on their bench where their tools should be) MUMBLING THE WORDS 'CAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW THE LYRICS, ARGUIN' ABOUT JACKET COLORS, AND WHAT BURGER STAND AROUND THE CORNER TO CRUISE TO TONITE TO LOOK AT PICTURES OF PASO, THAT FAR OFF PLACE THEY'VE ONLY HEARD ABOUT, ONE OF THEM DOWNLOADED OFF THE INTERNET AT THE LOCAL JUNIOR COLLEGE THAT THEY MUST ATTEND OR MOVE OUT ON THEIR OWN... nic
[ QUOTE ] YES they can.car clubs are like roomates [/ QUOTE ] Now there is a scary thought. I'm about ready to kill my roommates and they just happen to be my two closest friends at school! Don't do business with family and don't room with friends.
