Guys , Need input on which trans to use in my Gasser. I`ve got a Doug Nash 5 speed and a TCI C6 with a 10" converter . I can`t figure which to use , The car is a `60 Falcon with straight axle, 9" rear with 4.86 spool. 351C with Hilborn stack injectors, it`s a built engine 12.5 comp and the good stuff in it. I want to do a little street and strip with it. Need ideas which to use. Gasserman
Figure on that C6 to consume about 70 hp. I am in the process of changing my 71 Mustang to a manual, the C6 just eats too much HP, and is very heavy to boot. Plus as said above, kickin' & stickin' is a lot more fun. Stevo
Go with the 5 speed! Lots more FUN!! I have a 4 spd toploader in my 60 Falcon wagon, and its a ball to drive. I know I would have been bored with an automatic after about a month. Mine also has a Cleveland, and straight axle . Got any pics of yours? Bernie
I dont know, I bet the Nash is heavier than the C6 . I`ve got a 40# flywheel & blowproof bellhousing plus the Nash is about 135#`s. I`ll post some pictures as soon as I can reduce their size, too big to post here. Gasserman
I love manual transmissions myself, but one thing to consider is your cars handling. Your falcon (short wheel base) with a hilborn injected 351 (stout motor) and straight axel could make for a handfull to drive. Dont get me wrong, the doug nash 5-speed would be cool. But you might need both hands to keep her on the straight and narrow.
c6 will consume so much horsepower! the internals were built to stand up to ford big blocks, so they require some torque to spin team that up with a 9inch which also takes some power to spin. Now that car has the power to spin them both, but thats valuble horsepower! go with the stick... its way more fun when you can controll a race engine with 1 hand and 2 feet.
4.86 may be way more gear than you will need with that much motor and a Nash five speed. The five gear will be more fun, but I hope you can science out the suspension to make it hook. In the dark ages, a substantial number of real gas coupes used automatic transmissions (in the era before trans brakes) to go quick consistently.
Guys , My `63 Falcon had a 351C with a C4 trans and 5.43 gears in a 9" . It also had 14x32 Goodyears and run in the high 10`s to low a 11`s depending on the track . I`m running a shorter slick on this car so I went with the 4.86`s . Gasserman
Been running a Jerico in our ole red Ford for 10 seasons.........9.60s @140 plus..........FE /427 type engine, carbs, 3350 pounds pullin 31x10.5w......and a 5.00 gear....shifting at 7600.........goes thru the traps at around 7500............no other way to fly. Generally put both hands on the wheel around the 1000 ft mark...........just in time to drive by most of those automatics..........lol Mark
Ok Guys , You convinced me . I ordered the rest of the missing 5 speed parts .So it`s now time to rig up the clutch pedal. Gasserman
This post brings up an interesting question. I don't know much about real old gassers, but I've heard that they often used hydramatic auto trannies with some means of controlling how hard it shifts by altering the amount of pressure and this was done from the cockpit. Is this possible on a 4-speed hydro? Is it practical on a street car i.e. will it blow up the tranny?
